Chapter 39 - 38 Blood Plague

Chapter 39: Chapter 38 Blood Plague

Everyone on Lin Wu’s night shift could forget about sleep. Barely ten minutes after dozing off, they were all jolted awake by huge gunshots. The shots were fired only a hundred meters away from the base in a straight line. No one had ever heard gunshots that loud, and, without organizing it, they all got up to join in on the excitement. Hearing the continuous gunfire, they were all wondering, which rich guy encountered what kind of zombie?

If the gunshots were continuous, it meant the shooter had ammo. The loudness of the gunshots indicated a powerful weapon. And since the shooting lasted for so long, it implied the zombie was also strong. Maya let the cat out of the bag again, "It’s Lin Wu."

Oh, everyone suddenly realized.

Maya said, "The huge gunshots came from a Desert Falcon handgun he just acquired, which uses .50 caliber bullets. His target is the Blind Bats."

Oh! Everyone headed towards the road to greet Lin Wu, a gesture of respect for his one-on-one duel with the Blind Bats.

Stone said to Maya, "You could have kept it to yourself."

Maya asked, "They wanted to know."

Stone replied, "Interesting things become boring once you spill the beans. Or why do you think I pretended to be surprised along with them? To speculate? Because it’s fun. Your subordinates at Blue Star are all salaried staff, different from them. I understand that your job is to explain everything in great detail. However, I suggest you avoid spoilers for things not related to safety."

Maya appeared to be deep in thought, and at that moment, sparse applause came from the road, with Lin Wu’s voice sounding, "Guess what this is, guess right and I’ll let Stone reward you with a round of Eagle Sand bullets to play with... Ready? I’m coming in."

"Wait," Stone shouted, "I want to join in too."

Stone looked at Maya, "This is what fun is about. I’m not acting; I like to have fun too. Come on, let’s join in on the excitement."

Everyone was puzzled by the object resembling a microscope in Lin Wu’s hands, and Lin Wu hinted, "It’s the trashiest series of something very powerful."

After saying that, Lin Wu was about to enter, but was pushed out by Little Knife, "Hold on, let me have another look." The competitive spirit kicked in.

Snow Egg, being an engineer, was secretly competitive; she could tell at a glance the object was mechanical, and how could she lose to that? Su Shi shared the same thought, believing that whatever Lin Wu was holding must have been made on a lathe, "Give us another hint."

Lin Wu said, "It can work with electricity, or without."

Little Knife exclaimed excitedly, "I know, I know, it’s a coffee bean grinder."

"No."

Chef Horse Soul asked, "A meat grinder? A garlic pounder?"

Lin Wu, no longer waiting, headed to the storeroom, saying, "Hint, it’s related to heat guns."

Stone blurted out, "Seamless gun barrel cutter."

"No."

Maya asked, "Is it a part of an anti-materiel rifle?"

"No," Lin Wu replied, "Su Shi, help me make a couple of torches."

"There are a few five-minute ones in the warehouse."

"Good." Lin Wu went to get supplies from the warehouse, and upon coming out, seeing that no one had guessed right, he said, "Peeking is for puppies, I’m off."

"Tsk."

Maya called to Lin Wu, "Wait a moment, I’ll go with you."

Little Knife asked, "Where are you two going?"

Maya answered, "Building 2."

After hearing this, everyone was somewhat worried, and Tangtang said, "Maya, have you thought this through?"

Maya nodded, "We have to deal with Building 2 sooner or later, so we might as well take advantage of the Blind Bat’s death to conduct a targeted reconnaissance now."

Horse Soul said, "I think what Tangtang means is, if one of you must die going to Building 2, it’s likely to be you."

Maya said, "If I die, I will try my best to make it back to the mountaintop base."

Lin Wu held up three fingers, "If I die, I want three sticks of incense, every day."

Maya’s calm farewell touched and moved everyone. But as soon as Lin Wu spoke up, he completely dispelled the sorrow and emotion, leaving only laughter and cursing.

Stone, who understood Maya well, knew that wasn’t the case. Maya wanted to go with Lin Wu because she was worried about Lin Wu dying in vain. If Lin Wu could explain more about the situation in Building 2 before dying, the attack on Building 2 would be more assured in the future. It was not what everyone thought, that Maya was worried about Lin Wu undertaking such a dangerous task and went with him because she couldn’t bear it.

...

Building 2 was enveloped in a layer of Blood Mist, the closer to Building 2, the denser the mist became. Looking towards the streetlights from within the Blood Mist, one could visibly see blood filaments floating in the air. But the Blood Mist wasn’t really mist; it didn’t cling to the body, couldn’t be touched by hand, and nothing untoward showed up on the system interface.

Maya pointed at the green shrubbery in front of Building 2. Lin Wu nodded and stealthily made his way to it. The first floor of Building 2 was a large hall with doors at the front and back, through which one could see it was full of Blood Zombies, and a frontal assault would definitely not work. Lin Wu moved to the side, looked up at the drainage pipe and, taking a deep breath, began to climb.

Lin Wu had never climbed a water pipe or climbed high before, and was at a disadvantage in terms of technique. Fortunately, the game had enhanced his agility and stamina, allowing Lin Wu to successfully reach the fourth floor. The unit was structured in a T-shape, with the elevator locations on the left and right vertical lines, and the apartment rooms on the top and bottom horizontal lines, each unit having six suites.

There weren’t many zombies in the hallway, and Lin Wu easily took care of them one by one with his steak knife. After making a round, Lin Wu found that the Blood Mist was thickest in room 405. There had been a weapon clue about room 405 before: inside, there was a heavily modified, extremely powerful assault rifle.

Room 405 wasn’t locked, and Lin Wu gently pushed open the door. It was quite dark inside, but since the building was full of Blood Zombies, Lin Wu easily spotted two Blood Zombies standing in the living room. The zombies’ pair of blood-red eyes were particularly clear in the dead of night.

Lin Wu crouched as he entered, closed the door gently, and leaned on one side, waiting for his eyes to completely adjust to the dark.

Unsure of how many rooms were inside and with all the doors closed, Lin Wu first dealt with three zombies in the living room and kitchen. Then, he took a deep breath, pressed down on the doorknob, and opened one of the room doors. It was a study, only a few square meters big, too small to hide a zombie. After a brief search, Lin Wu left.

Then the second door, the third door, the fourth door, each with a few Blood Zombies. Finally, he reached the last door, which should be the master bedroom if he wasn’t mistaken, complete with a balcony and a bathroom. Lin Wu pressed down on the doorknob only to discover it was locked.

Guessing what might be inside, Lin Wu squatted against the wall and took several deep breaths, then pulled out his lock-picking tools. The lock proved difficult, and Lin Wu broke three lock picks before managing to unlock it. Lin Wu didn’t find any zombies in the bedroom, but he was shocked by the wall, and to see it more clearly, he lit a torch.

There was a blood-colored monster growing on one wall, which wasn’t quite the right word—it looked like a heart, but also like a tree growing inside the wall. It was visibly pulsating as if it were a beating heart.

At first glance, the tree took root at the base of the wall, its branch-like tentacles spreading across the entire wall. The tree-body, like a large heart, kept beating, and with each beat, blood was sent along each of its tentacles.

The upward tentacles penetrated the ceiling and extended upwards, the downward ones reached down, and the left and right tentacles delved into the wall itself, their destination unknown. To Lin Wu, it felt as if the entire Building 2 was wrapped by these tentacles. The building and it were one, invincible and impenetrable.

Lin Wu took out a display mirror from his backpack and aimed it at the creature, then he saw the name of the creature: Blood Plague.
