Chapter 38: Chapter 37 Night Battle with Blind Bat
The mission began. Two NPCs entered the farm building, and soon a zombie spawned near the farm and rushed towards it, which Maya easily intercepted and dealt with. Another zombie appeared, and Maya took it out with her crossbow arrow.
Meanwhile, Lin Wu, who had gone to urinate, finally found the Screeching Zombie and slapped it across the face. Dazed and infuriated by the slap, the Screeching Zombie let out an angry howl, which immediately attracted nearby zombies. Lin Wu circled around the farm, each time he saw the Screeching Zombie, he would run up to it and do a little twirl in front of it. Before long, Lin Wu was leading a procession of zombies in the wide open plains with sparse corpses.
Lin Wu, not rushing but not dawdling either, approached the farm and heard an unusual sound. He turned his head and discovered a Frenzy mixed in among the zombies. He didn’t dare to delay and accelerated into the farm, where Maya had already climbed onto the neighboring barn. Passing by the two NPCs, Lin Wu greeted, "Hi," without stopping then ran out ten meters before turning back to watch.
The Frenzy charged ahead, facing the assault rifle. The NPC pulled the trigger and bullets sprayed out, but the Frenzy’s head wasn’t hit. Its body, struck repeatedly by bullets, collapsed to the side and started howling. The NPC emptied a magazine into the Frenzy, and in moments, it was turned into mincemeat.
At this time, the horde also reached the two NPCs. The assault rifle stepped back to reload, while the ever-alert shotgun stood in front of him. He pumped the shotgun and took down a zombie with a headshot. Pumped again, another headshot. He kept firing while slowly backpedaling. After the seven shots were fired, he swapped places with the assault rifle NPC; he started loading while the assault rifle went into burst mode—three bullets per burst, each burst guaranteeing a zombie’s head would explode, prioritizing the Screeching Zombies, dead accurate.
The two NPCs kept firing while retreating, and by the time they reached the edge of the farm, there were no standing zombies left inside.
This combat capability, damn!
Lin Wu shouted, "Loot the corpses." In the face of overwhelming firepower, the zombies were like paper—fragile, and even the ferocious Frenzy was no more than fodder.
The gunshots attracted more sporadic zombies, and together with those spawned for the mission, around a dozen more hurried towards the farmhouse. Lin Wu and Maya ignored them, focusing on corpse looting beside the NPCs. When the zombies got close enough to the NPCs, they would take action. If there were few zombies, they would use melee weapons; if there were many, they would use guns.
The assault rifle NPC kicked open a crate and removed a signal transmitter, placing it in his backpack—the mission was a success.
Maya approached to converse, and the other party presented two options: base rewards or personal rewards. Without much thought, Maya chose the base reward. The NPC handed Maya a radio frequency and codename; using these, the mountaintop church could seek assistance from the Fortress. With the radio not upgraded, only the functions for material search and emergency airdrops were available.
At the same time, the mountaintop church received 20 points of honor. In short, helping the Fortress complete missions could earn honor points which could be spent to use special radio commands like material search. 100 honor points could be exchanged for a single material search, limited to basic packs, indicating the desired type of basic pack, like a building materials pack. The Fortress’s radio would then inform you of the nearest building materials pack to the base. The system specifically stated that this was a building materials pack refreshed specifically for the base, visible only to base members.
The emergency airdrop contained many options, for example if a car was damaged in the wild, you could contact the mountaintop base via walkie-talkie, who would then contact the Fortress for an airdrop. The contents of the airdrop would be a car repair kit, which could fix a car at 0% integrity to 30%. In addition, there were gasoline airdrops, bandage airdrops, and more. To access more commands, the base radio needed upgrading. How to upgrade the radio? The NPC said he didn’t know.
After expressing gratitude to Maya, the two NPCs quickly ran off and left the farm.
Seeing Lin Wu watching them leave with longing, Maya asked, "Could you take them out in seconds?"
Lin Wu answered, "It would be difficult. Their reactions are very fast, and I think they probably have system skill bonuses. The assault rifle bullets can penetrate; a single bullet could accomplish a double headshot."
Maya nodded, "No opportunity now, but there will be one later."
Lin Wu and Maya got into the car and asked, "Find anything good?"
Maya answered, "Some crop seeds, you?"
Lin Wu replied, "Some crop seeds."
Maya wanted to laugh, but she restrained herself in the end.
...
The two returned to the base successfully, where the day shift personnel hadn’t yet rested; they were in a meeting discussing the sudden appearance of honor points at the base. Some said it was a game update, some believed it was the accomplishment of hidden achievements, others said it was for surviving three days...
Lin Wu listened to their discussion, originally intending to remain silent, but Maya, being a straightforward person, explained the honor points to everyone, as well as the tasks she and Lin Wu had completed. Maya’s patient explanation made Lin Wu feel somewhat bored. With Lin Wu’s temperament, he would only reveal the truth to satisfy everyone’s curiosity if he was on the brink of bursting.
As expected, once everyone knew the answer, they lost interest—some returned to playing cards, and others went to sleep. Lin Wu requisitioned weapons from the warehouse: a sawed-off shotgun, the last four shotgun shells, a Desert Falcon, six bullets for the Eagle Sand, and the 12.7mm bullets they had scavenged before, suitable for the Eagle Sand. It was no exaggeration to say that Lin Wu had claimed half of the base’s armory.
The reason he requisitioned so many weapons was naturally due to the showdown with Blind Bat that was mentioned during the day. After Stone’s approval, Lin Wu checked the weapons and felt like he was perhaps bullying the weak.
Apart from Stone and Maya, nobody else knew that Lin Wu was going to fight Blind Bat to the death. The day after the rain, the moon hung high in the sky, and visibility was excellent; it was the perfect time to take advantage of Blind Bat.
Walking to the commercial street at night, Lin Wu reached the vicinity of apartment building 1, where he first encountered Blind Bat. He soon heard Blind Bat’s sounds. Judging from the noises, Blind Bat was circling around apartment building 2. When Blind Bat stopped at the closest point to Lin Wu on its routine path, Lin Wu subtly shifted his position. With this movement, Blind Bat went from suspicion to certainty and rapidly approached. Lin Wu broke into a run—there were too many zombies around the commercial street, and the location was disadvantageous. Knowing Blind Bat’s speed, Lin Wu lured it out of the commercial street for three hundred meters, shaking off the common zombies.
Lin Wu stopped and turned around, chewing gum to slowly restore his stamina, Eagle Sand in his left hand, the shotgun in his right, facing the direction of the sounds, he closed his eyes and listened intently to the approaching gurgling noises.
The sound changed rapidly, reaching Lin Wu in just a few seconds. Decisively, Lin Wu engaged Quick Gunner with the shotgun, hitting Blind Bat with all the bullets. After being hit, Blind Bat immediately dodged to the left. Its reaction was within Lin Wu’s expectations, considering that after Blind Bat’s dodge, it might be more than 5 or even 10 meters away, Lin Wu discarded the shotgun and aimed the Desert Falcon at the estimated landing point before activating Quick Gunner again.
After pulling the trigger, the Desert Falcon roared loudly like thunder on a clear day. Unlike a regular pistol, the Desert Falcon had a recoil buffer, and it took 1.2 seconds before it could fire again. Although the bullet didn’t blow the head off, Lin Wu heard the sound of rolling not too far away.
Lin Wu took out the last flare from the base and threw it, only to see Blind Bat, decked in its black crystalline protective color, writhing on the ground. It turned out that the Desert Falcon’s shot had broken its leg. It hadn’t learned to hop on a single foot, so it could only move its body instinctively. Lin Wu, holding his gun, approached within four meters, activated Quick Gunner again, and Blind Bat’s other leg snapped off.
What rotten luck?
Lin Wu, seething with anger, took a few steps closer and aimed at Blind Bat’s head with his Desert Falcon, but he missed... Enraged, he switched to the shotgun, stepped forward, and pulled the trigger at Blind Bat’s head.
Hmm! Not bad, the head finally exploded, satisfying!
Lin Wu left hand looted the corpse while his right hand held the shotgun in readiness. Just as he was about to finish, a zombie came running close by, and Lin Wu, careless with resources, blasted it with the shotgun. Although it wasn’t a headshot, the zombie was killed by one shot. At the end of the looting, Lin Wu found a very heavy object. Lin Wu looked at the item description: Press modulator, consumes one ammunition to craft either 5 or 10 .22lr bullets.
.22 bullets are approximately 5.6mm in size, but .22lr and the standard 5.56 bullets are not the same, and the specific differences will not be detailed here. In short, .22 bullets are the little brothers in the family of standard cartridges, mostly used in rifles, characterized by low power, quietness, minimal recoil, and high precision at close to medium range.
Why do you get either 5 or 10 .22 bullets from one unit of ammo? Manual pressing takes time and wastes materials, hence only five bullets can be made. Electric pressing can produce 10 bullets.
Handguns, shotguns, and the Desert Falcon have guns but no bullets. With .22, it’s the reverse, bullets but no guns.
