Chapter 380: Chapter 206 Base Night Events_2
Shana looked at the time, it was past one in the afternoon, and said, "Let’s go."
Lin Wu threw a deadly glare at Shana and left with her, instantly feeling victorious. Despite his contempt for him, he still had to greet him with a smile.
Shana didn’t notice the detail, and even if she had, she wouldn’t have minded. She said, "In the future, we should rest at night and set off at dawn. That’s the only way to make effective use of our time."
Lin Wu was curious, "I thought you liked chatting and laughing with everyone at night."
Shana replied, "I do, and even if I don’t join in, listening to their laughter isn’t bad. But as the Deputy Commander, I have a duty to adjust work hours. That’s called professional ethics."
Lin Wu said, "Hang out with Maya less, you’re learning bad habits."
Shana was speechless, "I have great respect for Maya’s professionalism."
Lin Wu replied, "I respect it too, but I don’t emulate it. If every one of us were as dedicated as Maya, would Maya still have any value? By pursuing your own interests, you erase the value of others, can your conscience really bear that?"
Shana was stunned, "What kind of theory is that?"
"Lin Wu theory."
"I am even more impressed by your ability to talk nonsense."
Lin Wu stopped in his tracks, "Zombie—Shana admires."
"What does ’Shana admires’ mean?"
Lin Wu said, "Little Dog Shana, on."
"Don’t just make up nicknames for people," Shana said indignantly.
Lin Wu warned, "Keep it down, or I’ll change Wai’s name to Little Dog Shana."
"Childish," Shana vented her frustration on the zombies. She didn’t doubt that Juvenile Ghost Lin Wu would actually do it. What was infuriating was that he would change the name back nonchalantly later. Even more infuriating, his mind might snap and he would change the name back again. Although it didn’t cause any real harm, she just couldn’t stand to see his smug face.
...
Walking through the dew to greet the glow of dawn, they emerged from the sewer it was already evening. What made Lin Sha feel ashamed was that Bai Ban started earlier and returned later than they did. It was only when the sun was about to set and night was about to fall that Bai Ban returned to the main base. But such was Captain Maya’s nature, and it really couldn’t be helped.
Everyone gathered around the bonfire, eating fried chicken and drinking beer. Maya arranged tomorrow’s itinerary, a mission on the 34th floor of the hotel. To protect the laborers and the boss, one person needed to take a day off to safeguard the boss and the safehouse. Maya and Lin Wu were indispensable; the others participated in a draw. Little Knife ended up staying behind.
Faced with an unhappy Little Knife, Snow Egg volunteered to rest, and in front of everyone, Little Knife and Snow Egg pushed the responsibility back and forth, affectionately, drawing a chorus of boos from the crowd. And so the team was decided.
The radio call came to life, and Stone lazily stood up, strolled into the factory, sat down, and picked up the walkie-talkie, "Received, go ahead."
"Stone, this is Nightmare. I’m looking for Maya," Nightmare was still very polite to Stone. Otherwise, what if he refused to pass the message? Better to offend a county chief than a gatekeeper—offend the gatekeeper, and you can’t even get through the gate.
Maya arrived swiftly, picked up the walkie-talkie, and asked first, "Nightmare, are there any player bases near our base?" A direct question concerning the heart of the issue.
Nightmare replied, "I have built a base near your sawmill to the north, not far from where the Hanxiala Monument is located in the valley." North of the sawmill was a reforestation area, connecting to the Left County mountains, an area sparse with both people and zombies.
Maya asked, "Anything else today?"
Nightmare: "I can’t beat them on my own, I need your help."
Nightmare explained the basic situation. The Hanxiala Monument is an artifact left behind by an alien civilization millions of years ago that contains powerful energy. Millions of years ago, an alien survey spaceship crashed in a valley and was buried by history. A few months ago, an earthquake near the valley exposed the spaceship’s hatch on the surface.
The spaceship emits a kind of radiation wave that only teams with medals can resist without injury, and only they can enter the spaceship. There are no high-tech security devices inside the spaceship, but there is a Blood Heart whose Blood Mist covers the interior of the ship. Perhaps due to the mission or the radiation, the Blood Zombies inside the spaceship are not only more powerful but also Titans are seen everywhere.
Even if an armed squad was assembled, the likelihood of reaching the Blood Heart to retrieve the monument was very low. The best and currently the only method is to use the ship’s interior structure to perform a stealth theft. Nightmare told Maya that on her last attempt she managed to get within 80 meters of the monument.
Maya, patiently listening, said, "Nightmare, the risk of this mission is not something we ordinary players can handle. We’re not even talking about Titans and the Blood Heart. Only teams with medals are safe from the radiation. If you go in there with Lin Wu, neither of you can afford to die—if you die, Lin Wu won’t survive either."
Maya: "If we put all our eggs in Lin Wu’s basket, he might just impulsively agree to it. He doesn’t like having his fate in someone else’s hands, and he won’t let you control his fate either. I don’t see the need to discuss this."
Nightmare: "That’s why I came to you first."
Maya: "Even if I didn’t disagree, even if I agreed, he wouldn’t do it, just to save my face."
Nightmare: "If I spend all my points, I can buy an M2 heavy machine gun, .50 caliber, 550 rounds per minute. High precision, strong firepower, slightly slower than similar products. With this machine gun, your base wouldn’t possibly be breached by zombies. In addition, I remember you have an upgraded vehicle called Overlord, which has a weapon mount for the M2 heavy machine gun."
Nightmare didn’t wait for Maya’s objection: "If the mission succeeds, the machine gun is your commission. If it fails, the machine gun is compensation. I believe if you swallow your pride and ask Lin Wu to take the mission, he’ll definitely give you that much respect."
Maya: "Nightmare, if Lin Wu is going to give me that much respect, I can’t be an ungrateful person, right? If you don’t want to drift or be homeless, you can join Shadow for the time being." Maya tactfully indicated she didn’t want to discuss the hiring issue with Nightmare.
Shadow Base had an abundance of food, and they were just discussing whether to use a unit to build a distillery. It would not only brew liquor but could also be used for distilling alcohol.
"Forget it, we’ll talk some other time."
"Alright, goodbye."
"Goodbye."
It’s no wonder Dawn wouldn’t let someone like Nightmare easily acquire a bug-level skill.
After Maya returned, she didn’t bring up the matter, even though Nightmare had approached her privately and it was official business. The topic by the campfire had moved onto the library; during a visit to the mall today, they discovered two semi-open bookstores on the second floor. If everyone agreed to build a library, they would go up to the second floor next time. If not, they would continue to scout the first floor.
Currently, Shadow Base had enough units for survival, with two large units and two small units left unplanned. Considering the summer update, everyone agreed to use a small unit to build an icehouse for permanent meat storage, although the materials needed for the icehouse were insufficient, necessitating organized demolition before summer, or using a large unit to build a large icehouse for storing all types of food.
The remaining choices were harder to make. Dawn offered many entertainment facilities, making it difficult to reach a consensus.
Snow Egg and Peanut supported building a cinema for less than ten seconds before Snow Egg changed sides and supported a hot spring bathhouse with Little Knife. Su Shi and Emerald Feather wanted a beach leisure copy. Maya was in favor of a library or training classroom. Shana supported a tennis court copy. Horse Soul was for a shooting range. Stone thought they could build another farm, or buy books to build a pasture. Lin Wu thought all the proposals were good except Stone’s; too many farms and pastures would keep everyone too busy.
The kitchen, being a functional building, would be decided in the summer on whether to build it; it was not included in the entertainment facility proposal.
If an emperor simply waved a hand and decided, those below, whether happy or not, would have to accept. Without an emperor, everyone in Shadow Base had too many opinions to ever settle on just one. No more than three people supported any one building, making it impossible to reach a decision.
Stone used his own method. After collecting everyone’s opinions, he asked, "Who opposes the cinema? Raise your hand." If he couldn’t gather enough votes of approval, then he’d operate in reverse.
Everyone wanted to build what they liked but didn’t necessarily oppose a cinema. Seeing that no one raised their hand, Stone achieved his goal, then gave everyone a piece of paper and pencil: "Cinema, hot springs, beach, library, tennis, shooting range. Please score them, one point each; whatever gets the highest score, we’ll build that entertainment facility."
Shana suggested, "Before scoring, let’s allow everyone to campaign. Introduce your recommended project, take questions from the voters."
"Throughout the long night, all time-wasters are welcome. Who wants to go first?" Stone finished and fired a rocket, and the grenade flew off who-knows-where, showing he had no preference.
