Chapter 367: Chapter 201 Visitors at the Commercial Complex
Maya nodded slightly toward Shana, expressing her gratitude for the reminder, "The secret lab is too dangerous, I’ll explore it alone with Lin Wu when there’s a chance." This could be understood in two ways. First, Maya didn’t want to put everyone in danger. Second, she did not want the others to slow her down.
Maya said, "Let’s retreat for now and explore the last exit tomorrow. If there are no other issues, we need to focus on exit 2 and figure out a way to quickly reach directly into the mall’s interior. If we can secure a foothold inside the mall, it will be enough to sustain us for several months."
When Lin Wu and Maya had a serious conversation, there was an understanding between them that was hard for others to interrupt, except for Shana. Peanut and the rest kept quiet on the side. Perhaps it was because they had too little information, and knew too little about the secret lab and the fortress, which kept them from joining in on these topics.
Shana said, "Everyone, keep up and watch out for forks in the path, and be careful of the Night Demon’s sneak attacks."
This was Shana’s strength. During major operations, Maya was the actual commander. As a fellow Deputy Commander, Shana never felt any discontent and always assisted Maya with full effort when needed, also serving as a lubricant for the team.
Lin Wu’s view of Shana: She had a sunny disposition, carefree. In love with Shana, one wouldn’t get her full commitment, and breaking up with her, she would quickly get over the gloom. Apart from her parents or children, nobody could surpass her own importance. She pursued without demanding, living a clear, refreshing, and joyful life.
Such a girl disliked a restricted or unchanged life for years. In other words, Shana was a great friend but definitely not a traditional good wife and mother.
...
There was no roast pork tonight, and Little Knife mentioned that if needed, she could go dig up some herbs as roasted herbs were also edible. After a winter and moving, the base’s food supplies were nearly exhausted. Once summer came and food packs were canceled, all food would rot, and running out of food would have unthinkable consequences.
Without roast meat, Lin Wu didn’t go to the main base. He had just fired two shots at the outpost when he received a system alert: A merchant was headed to the base for trade.
Lin Wu hastily called out, "Main base, there’s a merchant."
Professional Maya, still wearing her headset, immediately instructed, "Everyone put on your headsets and take your weapons to the Meteorological Station."
Everyone was enjoying the quiet night, with the breeze on their faces, their headsets were all in the warehouse. Hearing Maya’s call to action, they crowded into the warehouse searching for their equipment. While they scrambled and made noise, Lin Wu was already in combat.
An NPC wrapped in a group of zombies ran towards the Meteorological Station from a hundred meters away. The damned NPC’s movements were tricky, making it hard for the zombies to touch him. Overall, it was like an NPC merchant leading a siege with zombies. Judging by the distance to the zombies, Lin Wu switched to an assault rifle first, then to a handgun.
The zombies broke into the base’s safety zone, and instantly overran the fence corralling the chickens.
Lin Wu, who had intended to lead the NPC in, saw the situation turn dire and started to retreat up the exterior staircase toward the rooftop while firing. But upon entering the commercial stack, the NPC leisurely took out a portable stove and placed a metal cup over the flame, pouring water from a thermos into the cup. Meanwhile, the few dozen zombies that had been pursuing the NPC turned their attention to Lin Wu. Lin Wu took off running, "If you want it, you can have it, I don’t want this base anymore."
Fortunately, reinforcements from the Sawmill finally arrived. Shana, firing her gun while shouting, "Watch out for the chickens," was among the first to arrive along with Maya. Shana was from the Meteorological Station and always kept her equipment on her. Maya also stayed fully armed even within the base. The two watched as Lin Wu was chased by zombies to the rooftop, cornered at the outpost, and didn’t wait for the others to get ready before charging out to help.
The non-outpost gunfire triggered a chain reaction, and the nearby zombies converged on the spot, plunging the base into all-out war.
Maya: "Sentinel Forest Wolf, focus on the Titan. Loose soldiers, form a circular formation."
"An oval is fine too. Hurry up and save me, I need help!" Lin Wu called out urgently, trapped at the top of the outpost. After acquiring Silent Night, Lin Wu only carried the Silent Night handgun. Its biggest downside was its lack of firepower and slow reloading speed. Lin Wu could only retreat while firing with an assault rifle when suddenly the rifle jammed.
The rifle wasn’t entirely to blame; Lin Wu had never serviced it, so its durability had always been low. Lin Wu’s philosophy was to fix it when it jammed. Sometimes this was the right approach, as programmers know, as long as the system runs as expected, you shouldn’t worry about its bugs. Lin Wu: If the gun works, there’s no need to fix it.
Wind Stinger flashed, and the dagger stabbed from behind. Lin Wu maneuvered around the table at the top of the outpost, leveraging the small space to fight the zombies with his dagger. The dagger’s primary function in frontal combat was to stab, creating stiffening time, allowing stamina to recover sufficiently. As soon as stamina was restored, he executed them with Wind Stinger. However, his killing efficiency was woefully low.
Emerald Feather and Snow Egg were in the infirmary. Peanut and Horse Soul secured the parking lots on both sides of the Sawmill. Shana and Maya were still attacking the zombies at the main gate of the Meteorological Station base. With several Frenzies amongst the horde, they didn’t dare to advance, despite having assault rifles. The poorly skilled Sentinel Little Knife, with a shooting accuracy of only fifty percent, was in trouble. Seeing things going south, the clumsy Stone also picked up a rifle and joined the battle.
This sudden attack caught Shadow by surprise. Maya, who hadn’t prepared an emergency plan, was certainly going to take the blame.
Maya: "Shana, head to East Outpost and control the Frenzies and the Titan."
