Chapter 349: Chapter 195: Pioneering
Both were adept at navigating the first checkpoint and easily eliminated the zombies before Lin Ma occupied the electronics area, reaching the edge of the Blood Mist. Lin Wu dashed forward, while Maya provided cover as they both pushed into the Blood Mist. Lin Wu moved stealthily along the wall, silently assassinating one zombie after another, advancing about 20 meters successfully.
Then, the Blood Mist attack squads appeared, forcing them to retreat back to the television exhibit area. Lin Wu said, disheartened, "We’ll have to use the cover-up agent."
Maya replied, "Even though these things are nasty, it’s not like we can have them whenever we want. And with only one minute, there’s not enough time for a round trip. We must eliminate the Blood Heart in order to scour the supermarket."
Lin Wu said, "To take down the Blood Heart, we first need to scavenge for supplies, but to scavenge we need to eliminate the Blood Heart first." Logic defeating logic.
Maya said, "I’m thinking of Nightmare."
Lin Wu seemed to know what Maya was getting at. "Her Flying Dragon Claw is incredibly potent." Lin Wu had seen it once when Nightmare shot the fixed claw towards a tree trunk dozens of meters away. The pulling force it created when the line was reeled in could rapidly drag her towards the location of the Flying Dragon Claw.
"Just about," Maya was thinking of the various strange gadgets that Nightmare possessed, confident that one would definitely be able to help them now. Maya said, "Let’s go."
Lin Wu immediately set off, followed the Blood Mist squad, stalking them closely. He dispatched all but one of the Blood Mist squad. What came next was up to luck; to avoid another attack from the Blood Mist squad, Lin Wu had to stick with them. The squad attempt to stay beyond 15 meters from players; otherwise, the Blood Mist would be unable to form another attacking party within it. While tracking the Blood Mist squad, Lin Wu also had to watch out for other zombies nearby and stay within the 15-meter radius of the squad.
This was a loophole that Maya had found in the Blood Mist’s attack squad dispatch system, after two attempts.
With agility as both his main attributes, Lin Wu’s movements were swifter, and being primarily focused on physical strength allowed his stamina to further increase, with the secondary attribute of Will reducing his stamina consumption. Throughout, Lin Wu relied on Wind Stinger for active attacks on zombies that discovered him, taking things one step at a time, closely following the last zombie of the Blood Mist squad.
After reaching the hardware section, the Blood Mist zombie staggered downstairs. Lin Wu immediately began searching the cabinet most likely to contain building materials. Watching the search bar, he kept a vigilant eye on the surrounding zombies. A three-meter distant zombie took a step forward, spotted Lin Wu crouched and searching on the side, and growled as it prepared to attack Lin Wu, who grabbed a pack of building materials and immediately ran for his life.
Though his movements were minimal, the sheer number of zombies meant that his running away startled quite a few, causing a tail of zombies to chase after him. Maya provided support with her Repeating Crossbow, running first when Lin Wu got close before he caught up with her. The two ran out of the metal door and all the way to the edge of the rooftop.
In the end, only three zombies chased them out of the metal door. After milling about the doorway for a while, they went back inside.
Lin Wu let out a sigh of relief. "Scavenging for building materials like this could get us killed early." Left County may have abundant supplies, but it was also teeming with zombies.
"Let’s head back. We can build a sub-base now," Maya said. "For now, we have enough building materials to create a guard post and a dormitory."
Lin Wu was moved but declined, "Let’s build the main base first."
Maya seemed not to hear what Lin Wu had said and mused, "I don’t quite understand. You’re mostly shooting from the watchtower when you’re at the sub-base. But why do you seem so distracted and lack any enthusiasm when working at the main base’s watchtower?"
Lin Wu replied, "When I’m on watchtower duty, I have a clear target and responsibility to eliminate nearby zombies. At the sub-base watchtower, even if I just aim without shooting, nobody cares."
Maya nodded, "You’re probably afraid that you’re not doing enough or worried about failing to meet others’ expectations."
"Probably," he conceded.
Maya said, "But I’ve never thought you lacked confidence. On the contrary, I think you are especially confident."
Lin Wu thought for a moment, then asked, "Are you disappointed in Emerald Feather?"
Maya stopped and turned back, "Yes."
Lin Wu said, "I believe Emerald Feather didn’t know what she did wrong at the time. No one told her that she couldn’t carry a Forest Wolf, nor did anyone stop her from doing so. When she was on watchtower duty at Shadow Mountain Top Church, she used the Forest Wolf. She felt ashamed of losing her firearm, but she doesn’t know the significance of losing the Forest Wolf."
Maya understood a bit better. "You don’t like communal living mainly because you dislike the demands of the group. You’re unclear about when you might violate some rule, so you prefer to work in a small group or alone. Just like the first time Shana died, the Soulless brother blamed you for not protecting her well, making you very reluctant to work with Shana after her resurrection."
Lin Wu didn’t deny it and shared his own story. In college, Lin Wu joined the badminton club, which organized a university zone badminton competition. Students who placed in the top three could earn credits. Ultimately, a female member of the club took first place. She had defeated the club president in the penultimate match.
The vice-chancellor watched the finals and chatted with Lin Wu, who was running errands, about the match where the president was defeated. The vice-chancellor was familiar with the president’s skills and suspected that the president deliberately lost to avoid suspicion of bias in securing the top three spots. Lin Wu, lacking in life experience, spoke the truth: the club president was the boyfriend of the champion. The vice-chancellor’s face turned sour immediately.
