Chapter 345: Chapter 193: Aerial Corridor_2
Just as Lin Wu was intently eliminating zombies, the noise of the sawmill pierced his eardrums. Lin Wu stuck his head out to look toward the factory, only to see everyone blocking their ears as they ran from the interior of the factory to the backyard. Indeed, there really was no such thing as a free lunch—the cost of adding one building material unit per hour not only increased the threat value but also forced players to endure the torment of the noise.
The one with the best mentality had to be Shana, who put on her Nuclear Portable Player and sat on the ground, enjoying the entire sawing process. Oddly enough, the process of cutting the logs was neat and efficient, which was quite stress-relieving.
Outside the safe zone where you couldn’t hear the noise, you wouldn’t directly attract zombies, which meant the system still retained some basic decency. Why do I say so? Because the sound insulation in the barracks was very poor, and lying in bed, all you could hear was a booming, hissing sound. Even when sleeping and dreaming, the sound of the sawmill—boom, hiss, hiss—echoed in the dreams.
The system determined the sleep environment to be poor in quality, so 5 hours of sleep were changed to 6 hours. However, come the summer season, this problem would be resolved as the system would no longer regulate sleep time or location. Still, it required everyone to have a bed. If the base didn’t have enough beds, all members would be in a low-spirited state.
Waking up early in the morning, Lin Wu walked out of the barracks with a dull look, surrounded by buildings and the incessant sound of sawing in his ears. Lin Wu was just about to sit down on the ground when Stone, wearing a straw hat, pulled Lin Wu to sit on a chair in the farm area and covered Lin Wu’s head with his own straw hat. During this, Lin Wu didn’t struggle or resist, his mind filled only with the booming, hissing noise of the saw.
Snow Egg and Shana were on sentry duty, and the others gradually came out of their dormitories, looking around with vacant eyes. After Little Knife found a place to sit in the backyard, the rest also sat down side by side, no one asking why they were sitting there. After sitting for a while and coming back to their senses, Little Knife looked around and called out loudly, "Where’s Lin Wu?"
Snow Egg up in the watchtower replied, "I don’t know."
Maya answered through the headset, "He should have gone out."
Little Knife, "I want to go out too."
Snow Egg, "It’s dangerous outside."
Lin Wu hadn’t gone far. After crossing the river, he stealthily passed through dangerous zones and arrived at an outpost of the power station. Climbing up to the rooftop of the control room, he lay down to beautifully admire the blue sky and white clouds. Even the low growls of nearby zombies were far more pleasant to hear than the sound of the sawmill.
After resting for a bit, Lin Wu set his sights on a row of shops about a hundred meters away. There were a total of seven stores on this commercial street—three restaurants, two bars, one small supermarket, and one clothing store, which were apparently mainly serving the workers of nearby factories before the virus outbreak.
The street was at the edge of the Blood Mist, with about three and a half of the stores enveloped in it. Lin Wu climbed onto the power station’s fence for a careful observation; the road to the commercial street didn’t have many zombies, but the density of zombies on the street itself was extremely high. It was a situation similar to when he and Maya had stolen books. That time, Lin Wu had to consume a corpse smell concealer to successfully enter the bookstore.
Inside the power station were eight towering pylons. Lin Wu climbed one of them and dropped a water pipe onto two power lines to prove they were not electrified. He used a rope to bind his arms, creating a simple safety harness, and hung from one power line with one hand while the other hand hooked the safety harness onto the power line. After getting set up, he moved hand over hand towards the commercial street, continuously shifting the knot of the safety rope along the wire.
This was where the game’s features came into play—in reality, doing something this dangerous, you might lose your grip due to carelessness. But in the game, as long as your stats are sufficient, you wouldn’t fall.
Lin Wu alternated hand over hand for about 30 meters. When his stamina was exhausted, Lin Wu let go, letting the harness suspend him in the air. As his stamina slowly refilled, Lin Wu continued to move hand over hand forward, constantly shifting the safety rope’s knot on the wire.
At that moment, everyone from Shadow was up at the watchtower watching the spectacle, some with binoculars, and others with rifles. Little Knife asked worriedly, "How is he going to get down?"
Two pylons spanned across the middle of the commercial street. When he reached above the rooftops of the shops, Lin Wu dropped a rope and slid down to the rooftops. There were no zombies on the rooftops, which were littered with tents and basic living necessities—it seemed many had taken refuge on the rooftops before.
Opening the skylight cover of Shop No. 1, Lin Wu released a drone and obtained information about the zombies inside the clothing store. It was hard to imagine that a shop with less than a hundred square meters could house 12 zombies.
Lin Wu crept into the clothing store through the skylight stairway, using obstacles and stealth to eliminate the zombies one by one. After spending a considerable amount of time and energy clearing out the zombies from the clothing store, Lin Wu asked himself a question: What was he doing in the clothing store?
This was not a meaningless question. Lin Wu had searched through most of the shop, finding only a pile of fabric and a brown suit. Looking at the brown suit, Lin Wu hesitated; he knew that this suit would fall into Stone’s clutches, so he pinned a few embroidery needles in the thigh area of the suit pants.
After a thorough search, only two fitting rooms remained. Lin Wu pushed open one of them, finding a lady’s shoulder bag hanging inside. Searching through the bag, he obtained a set of keys, a box of business cards, and some information. Taken together, it seemed that the owner of the bag was the manager of Warehouse No. 88, which was next door to the Sawmill, in the bottom-right corner of Tianzi.
The second fitting room finally yielded something valuable to Lin Wu: a bulletproof vest. Although it was unclear why a clothing store would sell a bulletproof vest, Lin Wu gladly took the vest that could withstand five gunshots. It was a one-time-use protective gear that could negate the damage from five bullets hitting the vest. Specifically, one shotgun blast counted as a single instance of damage.
Next was the restaurant. Shop No. 02’s restaurant had two food packs, but Lin Wu could only take one. He also packed up some ingredients, found three cookbooks, and a kitchen plugin. However, due to the current scarcity of small containers, Stone didn’t plan to set up a kitchen just yet. Lastly, Lin Wu found a barrel of gasoline in the kitchen.
Why was there gasoline in the kitchen? Who knew.
With his load now full, Lin Wu returned to the rooftop of Shop No. 1, put on a safety harness, grabbed the rope, and climbed back to the wire, re-hanging the safety harness on the wire. With high agility, these tasks were very easy for him.
A few bored members of Shadow were earnestly trying to imitate Lin Wu by climbing the wire tower, even the sentries had come out to slack off. Climbing the wire tower was not difficult, but each person performed differently when alternating hands while climbing on the wire. Shana, with zero attributes in agility, could only move about 5 meters before running out of stamina. The best performer was Double-body Snow Egg, who could move about 10 meters.
Of course, everyone wasn’t truly idling about; they were just worried about Lin Wu venturing out alone and hoped to help with something. They climbed and waited on the wire tower for Lin Wu’s return. When he came back, Lin Wu transferred his items to Shana and Snow Egg, and the two sentries went off to dump the trash and then off to work.
After some discussion, Lin Wu went back to the base to fetch a few bundles of rope and returned to the wire tower. He tied one end of two ropes to the tower and then proceeded towards the commercial street. Once a rope reached its end, he tied another rope to it, continuing until the rope stretched over the commercial street.
For the second step, Maya put on a safety harness, hung a belt over the wire, and connected the Rope A to the belt while holding the belt with both hands. On the other side, Lin Wu, who had reached the rooftop of the commercial street, pulled Rope A, allowing Maya to slide smoothly towards the commercial street with the help of the belt’s toughness. Once over the rooftop, Maya unlocked her safety harness and grabbed Rope C to slide onto the rooftop of the commercial street.
After scavenging enough to fill his pack, Lin Wu put on his safety harness, climbed up the wire, and grabbed the belt. Peanut and Horse Soul pulled Rope B, bringing Lin Wu back to the power station. After trading the backpack’s goods with Little Knife, Maya pulled Rope A to get Lin Wu back.
In the midst of scarce resources and threats on all sides, Shadow Base had established an aerial corridor. Importantly, the aerial corridor could lead not only to the commercial street. By utilizing eight wire towers from the power station, connected to wires stretching across various locations, Shadow could scour many potential resource points, including the commercial street.
The downside was that it was troublesome and labor-intensive. However, compared to listening to the noise of the Sawmill at the base, everyone was willing to do the grunt work at the power station’s wire towers.
Lin Wu was responsible for setting up the aerial corridor, but he couldn’t be the only one working on it. To this end, Maya planned to rearrange the shifts. Lin Wu strongly opposed this, arguing that they were having fun and the thought of having shifts took away his motivation. He would have to spend six hours as a sentry, another six hours scavenging, six more pulling the ropes, and then six hours for sleep, leaving no free time in his twenty-four-hour day.
Lin Wu’s opinion was simple: whoever enjoyed it, should go play.
Maya, a typical collectivist, pursued the interests of the group and was not convinced by Lin Wu’s viewpoint. She believed that, given the current shortage of materials, gathering supplies as quickly as possible would enable Shadow Base to make more sufficient preparations before the summer arrived. She only agreed to adjust the scavenging and rope-pulling shifts to three hours each.
