Chapter 317: Chapter 182: Assault_2

Lin Wu’s idea was indeed sensible, and since Maya was someone who valued reason, she had no choice but to dive back down to search again. Do you know what the most infuriating thing was? It wasn’t that she failed to find the token, but that she indeed found another one, proving Lin Wu to be right. She couldn’t even find a reason to be angry.

Maya thought to herself that if he asked her to search again, and she didn’t find anything this time, then she would have an excuse to explode in anger.

Unexpectedly, Lin Wu didn’t play by the usual rules and said, "Let’s go, it looks like there’s nothing left."

Maya: "Perhaps there’s still something?"

"If you insist," Lin Wu gestured, indicating it was up to her.

Without a word, Maya climbed out from the pool. The green water was no different from regular water, but Maya felt uncomfortable all over, wishing she could immediately shower under a waterfall to cleanse herself.

The system had a more convenient method for showering—simply brushing off the green water. Not just the green water, but also dandruff, stains, and grease could be brushed away.

Continuing deeper and after eliminating a spider and more than a dozen zombies, the two decided to return the way they came. The path ahead led to a collapsed subway station with seven or eight unevenly sized passages. To avoid getting lost, they had to give up exploring.

Back at the tunnel entrance, Lin Wu, now clad in protective gear, shouted, "Beauty coming out, hold your fire." It would be too tragic to be accidentally killed.

As they exited the subway entrance, they discovered no one outside. Then, gunshots and slashing sounds came from the tunnel. Rushing to the scene, they saw countless zombies pouring out of the tunnel, with numerous players wielding melee weapons fighting against them. Hardly anyone was shooting, as after all, not everyone was wealthy.

The players held off the zombies, but with their sizeable number, the later zombies climbed over a wall of bodies to leap over those in the front row. Fortunately, there were many players, who immediately attacked and controlled these zombies. In one-on-one situations, players with melee weapons didn’t lose out to zombies and actually had a significant advantage due to their skills and attributes.

Of course, the players were given an incentive for their diligent work—killing a zombie earned them a point. Lin Wu, the tycoon, naturally wouldn’t care about a single point, but Maya wanted to go for it. With her swordsmanship, she could wear down the two sabers she brought into the instance.

Unfortunately, with over two thousand players crammed outside a tunnel, a dense mass of them, she couldn’t squeeze in. Helplessly, she and Lin Wu went to the tent area to prepare for check-in procedures, planning to take on defense tasks in the evening.

Right at that moment, two loud explosions came from the tunnel entrance. The two ran to higher ground and saw the crowded players scattering in panic, trampling over one another. Many players’ protective suits were already shattered, and dozens of bodies lay at the tunnel entrance, with a large swarm of zombies rushing out.

Lin Ma exchanged glances, knowing that it was the work of Fortress Hunters, but looking around, all they could see were people in protective gear, making it impossible to identify the Hunters. Even if they knew, finding them amid such chaos was not feasible.

As the zombies appeared, NPCs fled into the tent area, and while players also tried to enter, they were informed that it was full. Lin Wu lifted Maya by her buttocks, hoisting her up so she could climb into the raised bucket of an excavator. He, with his nimble movements, also squeezed into the bucket.

At 3 meters above the ground, sitting in the bucket, they watched as zombies surged beneath them like a tide. Those who tried to resist were quickly overwhelmed, unable to make a stand. Even small groups that fought back were soon engulfed by the horde due to their encirclement. What was worse, a third explosion went off among the dispersing players, not very powerful, but enough to completely crush their will to fight. With the tunnel to the south and the subway to the west, players fled northeast.

After driving all the players away, the zombies did not continue their pursuit; instead, they started to wreak havoc on the excavation site, smashing trucks, excavators... Except for the tent area, almost every piece of equipment in the excavation site was devastated. Even the excavator where Lin Ma was perched got smashed into a wreck. Fortunately, the zombies didn’t bother to dismantle the machinery, sparing Lin Ma from disaster.

Once done with their destruction, the zombies retreated back into the tunnels, leaving only devastation behind. The NPCs in the tent area started working again, some stroking trucks and weeping silently, others sighing with regret, perfectly conveying the meaning of the word ’tragic.’

Meanwhile, a new task appeared in the tent area: collect parts. Upon accepting the task, one would receive a pry bar designed for dismantling, and any dismantlable facility yielded varying amounts of parts, which could be exchanged for points in the tent area. Once the collection rate of parts in the excavation site reached 100%, the machines would resume operation. Until then, the site couldn’t even provide power for lighting.

The tent area also had a large screen, showing that the number of surviving players had suddenly decreased from around 70,000 to 60,000.

Lin Wu and Maya prepared their room and entered the tent’s guest room, "Even if two digging sites were attacked simultaneously, it wouldn’t cause the deaths of 10,000 people, right?"

Maya said, "That’s right! The explosions caused a stampede, and the tearing caused protective suits to rupture. At the digging site we were at, there were at least a thousand people dead. About three thousand for two digging sites. Add to that the hunting from the Hunters in the past few hours, we’re probably at five thousand. That still leaves a gap of five thousand people."

Players were divided into two units, supply point in Zone 1 and digging site in Zone 6 as one unit, and supply point in Zone 4 and digging site in Zone 7 as another unit. About 20% of the people were at digging sites, around 40% were doing hard labor at supply points, approximately 30% were receiving treatment and sleeping at supply points, and the remaining 10% were on the road.

Maya said, "Unless the Hunters start a massacre."

"A massacre?"

Maya asked, "Aren’t most players equipped with just handguns? They don’t have many bullets, which are very valuable to them. The supplies we gathered from killing and looting shortly after entering the copy were abundant, indicating that the Hunters’ points are very plentiful."

At that moment outside the tent, people who had escaped death returned to the digging site, all still shaken by the attack they had just experienced. Soon, someone discovered that new tasks had appeared at the digging site. Just as everyone was bustling about taking on tasks, three players appeared in the open land to the northeast. They were wearing protective suits and walked slowly toward the digging site, suddenly pulling out automatic rifles and opening fire.

When the gunfire sounded, panic set in among the crowd, and two other players pulled out assault rifles, firing wildly at people close by, cutting down players beside them like wheat.

After losing hundreds of people, the players were driven by the gunmen toward the southwest direction, which led to the tunnel and subway entrance. Five players occupied the center of the digging site, switching magazines behind cover, and kept firing into the crowd 30 meters away. They didn’t even need to aim, with hardly any shots missing their mark, only wishing their guns could fire faster. Bullets tore through the protective suits and as players were exposed to radiation, the blood loss from radiation left their protective mechanisms null and void. Fully-healed players were left with critical health, dying if they were a moment too slow to take medicine.

These five Hunters had herded people towards the southwest from the start, calculating that as long as there was a place to run to, players wouldn’t immediately fight back. And there was no cover in the southwest direction.

Facing overwhelming firepower, the players caught by surprise were very weak in their counterattacks. People were packed so tightly that they couldn’t even hold their guns steady, and those in the front row desperately burrowed into the crowd, causing even more chaos at the scene.

There were also players who bravely charged at the Hunters, but the 30-meter distance saw them dead on the spot.

Fortunately, a leader quickly emerged among the players, and under his shouting, the people charged together at the Hunters. The Hunters immediately began a fighting retreat, continuously eliminating players who reached them. However, the number of players was simply too much, and before long, the tide of people overran the five Hunters.

No one expected that the Hunters had filled their backpacks with bombs. As they were tackled, they pressed the detonation buttons, and five bombs exploded in succession, shaking the ground incessantly. The massive shockwave left players either dead on the spot, critically injured with tattered clothing waiting to die, or with their protective suits riddled with holes.

While a frenzy of killing raged outside, the inside of the tent for guests who had paid points was very quiet. Lin Wu had no idea what was happening outside and objected to Maya, "With so many players, if each fired a single shot, even 30 Hunters attacking together wouldn’t stand a chance."

Maya said, "You’ve forgotten people can panic. The players are all ordinary people who have never experienced an attack."

Lin Wu had never experienced an attack in a crowd, so he simulated it in his mind, realizing that even if he could confront the attackers with firearms, he would be scattered by the fleeing people, hence the best course of action would be to run with them. After thinking for a while, he still felt he could counter-attack in such a situation but couldn’t come up with a good method due to limited imagination.

Since he couldn’t come up with anything, Lin Wu said, "Let’s sleep, we still have defense duties tonight."
