Chapter 308: Chapter 179 Supply Point
After about an hour’s drive without sighting a single zombie, they ran into a small patch of white fog instead. Lin Wu drove around the fog, and as he looked back, he realized it was different from ordinary fog; it would deform but not dissipate, almost as if it were a single entity.
The road was littered with building debris, making the journey far from smooth as they often had to slow down and take detours. The sun was harsh, and the two of them felt parched. Just as they were discussing where to rest, Wai suddenly let out a low grunt, its eyes fixed on a two-story building to the right ahead.
Maya brought the three-wheeled vehicle to a sudden stop at the solitary two-story building, Lin Wu stormed through the front door, and Maya circled around to the back.
The Fortress Hunter had seen the three-wheeled vehicle approaching but didn’t pull the trigger as its erratic speed and zig-zagging path made a clear shot impossible. He planned to wait for the vehicle to pass and then take them out from behind on the highway, which would be easier when they were moving in a straight line. However, before the Hunter could act, the enemy charged headlong towards him, leaving him momentarily at a loss.
Lin Wu opened fire upon sighting the enemy, gaining the upper hand. The Hunter quickly hid behind cover, stretching out his pistol to suppress Lin Wu’s advance. From a distance of 7 meters, Lin Wu used the Wind Stinger ability to appear behind the Hunter and shot him in the head. The dying man turned back in shock and asked, "Lin Wu?"
Lin Wu fired another shot and exclaimed in surprise, "Nightmare? No, you can’t die." He reached out to support Nightmare’s body to loot the corpse, thinking to himself that he could consider becoming an actor since arriving on Earth.
Maya, having encircled to no avail, came in to find Lin Wu looting the corpse. She stayed on guard as she backed up to Wai and asked, "Is there anyone else?"
Lin Wu asked: "Is there anyone else?"
Wai lay on the ground without any defensive actions, obviously sensing no nearby threats.
"Thirty pistol rounds, two Wide Blade Landmines, stingy bastard. One anti-radiation pill." Lin Wu picked up the landmine to examine it, "How do you use this thing?"
"Don’t mess with it." Seeing Lin Wu about to pull the safety pin, Maya quickly intervened and took the Wide Blade Landmine with caution, "It’s an M18 Claymore anti-infantry mine with a kill range of 250 meters." When detonated, shrapnel flies in a specific direction, reaching up to 250 meters.
Lin Wu in amazement, "You know about this?"
"It’s written on it."
Lin Wu squinted and indeed saw it written on the mine: M18 Anti-Infantry Mine, lethal range 250 meters, can be detonated via tripwire, infrared signal, or remote control.
After confiscating the Wide Blade Landmines, Maya went upstairs to search but found no other items. However, she did make another discovery and called Lin Wu to the second-floor window.
From the window, they could see a road running along the river. Maya said, "I think there’s a starting point nearby."
Lin Wu said, "You mean Nightmare was setting an ambush on the road with Wide Blade Landmines?"
Maya replied, "Place one mine at both ends and remotely detonate them; that would kill quite a few people."
Lin Wu asked, "What if you set up eight? One every fifty meters, all detonated together."
"I don’t know." But Maya knew that the shockwave from the Wide Blade Mines wasn’t very strong, relying mainly on steel balls to cause injury, and it would be difficult to penetrate the bodies of several people. Since players were only vulnerable in the head. Suddenly Maya realized something, "Nightmare’s goal might not be to kill as many players but to destroy their protective suits."
Lin Wu had an epiphany, "It seems she has a lot of points."
Maya stated, "You’ve also got quite a few points."
Lin Wu teased with a smile, "Jealous?"
"Not at all." Maya said, "Let’s go."
After Maya canvassed the area once more: "No transport vehicles found, either well hidden or she walked here."
Lin Wu said, "There must be a Fortress Hunter supply point nearby."
"Maybe." Maya said, "Get on, let’s go."
Once Lin Wu got on and called for Wai, the little creature jumped into Lin Wu’s arms, its eyes darting around, constantly vigilant.
...
"Clear the way." Lin Wu raised his pistol and fired into the sky as the motorcycle zoomed past a crowd of dozens. Resigned to courtesy, people instinctively made way before becoming irate, reaching for their weapons. But by then, the motorcycle was already far away. What’s worse, the guy riding shotgun kept firing into the sky, yelling, "Charge!" He was the spitting image of a small-time warlord’s underling from 21st-century Africa, minus the AK he couldn’t quite handle.
Maya suppressed the urge to kick Lin Wu off the vehicle more than ten times, understanding his showboating when people were around. But even on deserted streets without a soul in sight, he couldn’t stop himself from shooting and shouting. If it weren’t for Wai, she would’ve stopped the bike immediately and dragged him off for a beating.
Another eight people appeared ahead, standing to the side. Lin Wu continued to fire warning shots, "Clear the way, clear the way," before the motorcycle came to a stop.
Lin Wu looked at Maya reproachfully: eight was too many to take on.
Maya called out with a friendly, "Hey."
Lin Wu’s expression grew more plaintive at the sight; these were the folks from Starfire Base. Why aren’t you wearing protective suits? He glanced at the scanner—oh, green. A bunch of paupers, too stingy to wear their suits.
"Maya?" Starlight asked, then embraced Maya as she got off. Starlight turned to Lin Wu, who was silently focused forward, then gestured with a wave, "Hey, Lin Wu."
"Hey, Starlight." Busted.
Sunlight came over to shake hands with Maya, "Heading to Supply Point 4?"
"Yes." Only 10 kilometers away from the supply point.
Sunlight said, "Glad to be fighting alongside you again." It was clear they were headed for Excavation Point 7, the one nearest Zone 4.
"Me too." Maya replied, "I can take one more person with me."
