Chapter 285: Chapter 169: Mindset

Maya stepped out of the main entrance and stood amidst the Blood Mist, drawing her pistol to teach everyone how to grip it properly. These tactics normally wouldn’t need to be explained; she could have jumped straight to assault rifles. But after listening to Shana’s account of last night’s battle, Maya thought the less noisy pistol was more practical than the assault rifle in certain aspects. Though the assault rifles were powerful, they cost more. Moreover, in complex terrain, where close combat was common, pistols were more practical than rifles.

Isn’t there close combat? Close combat is less efficient, and it’s difficult to attack while moving.

About ten zombies emerged from the Blood Mist, and Maya waited until they entered the safety zone of the base before raising her gun and advancing, "Remember, when you raise your gun to aim, the pistol should not be between your eyes. It should align so it’s a straight line from your left eye, Crosshair, and the zombie’s head, or from your right eye, Crosshair, and the zombie’s head. When you start moving and shooting, don’t rely on intuition and the feel of the gun, you must get used to the sight’s direct aim. Using one hand to hold the gun is not recommended."

Maya said, "Don’t stretch the pistol too far, keep it as close to your dominant eye as possible. The shorter the distance between Crosshair and your eye, the faster the aiming speed." After speaking, she gripped the pistol with both hands, pulled the trigger, and calmly stepped forward, shooting zombies in the head one by one. Whether it was at five or ten meters, Maya didn’t waste a single bullet and quickly took down all the zombies.

"Ready to change the magazine," Maya maintained the aiming stance, pulled out a spare magazine with her left hand while continuing to shoot with her right, and used the hand with the spare magazine to help balance. Then, as the bullets were exhausted, she ejected the magazine and loaded a new one, "This way, you can maintain the pistol’s firepower."

Maya called out, "Lin Wu, prod the screamer."

"Got it," Lin Wu took a long pole from the warehouse, a relic from Shana. Just as Lin Wu approached the screamer, he stopped and returned, "There’s a Titan nearby."

"Distance."

Lin Wu thought for a moment. Front door, back door, plus the passage, plus the supermarket, how far would it be? He said, "At the location of the small lake at the back door."

Knowing the layout of the supermarket, Maya said, "It’s fine."

Lin Wu prodded then, and the screamer attracted a large crowd of zombies. Maya signaled, "Little Knife, you go first, prioritize accuracy."

Little Knife’s marksmanship was so poor it was painful to watch. She couldn’t hit anything at ten meters, at five meters she might hit by chance, at three meters one out of three, and even at a distance of one meter, she could miss the target. An emergency upgrade to the medical room was ordered by Lin Wu, and Little Knife became the first patient in the second bed. Maya thought Little Knife’s problem lay in the panic that set in when a shot missed a zombie, causing the gun to shake and her to alternate focus between her left and right eyes on the Crosshair.

Snow Egg and Horse Soul were on par with each other, yet there was a world of difference between them. Snow Egg was accurate at hitting targets beyond ten meters, but her performance dropped significantly at five to ten meters. The reverse applied to Horse Soul, who struggled to hit zombie heads at ten meters, but his accuracy increased as the distance shortened. Maya thought Horse Soul was an ordinary person. Snow Egg’s exceptional performance at longer distances came from her archery training, which endowed her with strong long-range targeting, but she didn’t follow Maya’s strict pistol grip at close ranges, and like Little Knife, didn’t focus on the Crosshair.

Peanut’s performance was good, dispatching more zombies than the others in the same amount of time. However, Peanut had the Rapid Fire skill, meaning he used more bullets.

Lin Wu performed the best, benefiting from his daily play with the Silencer at Shadow Base. But his rate of fire was slow, not fully utilizing the pistol’s potential rate of fire.

In the end, Emerald Feather’s performance met everyone’s expectations; it was about the same as Little Knife. The difference was when zombies got within a meter, Little Knife still persisted in fighting while Emerald Feather had already fled. This made Lin Wu wonder about something, if the medic was hurt and lying on the bed, were there any doctors on duty in the medical room at all?

After Lin Wu raised this issue, Maya became very interested in the answer. Once Little Knife was discharged, Maya called over Emerald Feather. She gave Emerald Feather a painkiller and then broke her leg with a stick. Poor Emerald Feather, with everyone’s help, lay on bed number two. Then the answer became clear; as long as there was a medic in the medical room, whether on the bed or on the ground, they could treat the wounded and sick, including themselves.

Next, Maya began training pairs in pistol cooperation. After an entire day of training, the threat level of the supermarket base had risen to 5.8 stars. Maya advised Lin Wu and Shana not to fire recklessly at the base, then took Bai Ban and returned to Shadow Base.

Lin Wu stood at the main entrance, watching everyone leave, "She made us shoot all day, then told us not to shoot."

Shana took a cup of hot water, sipping as she asked, "Do you plan to rebel?"

Lin Wu shook his head, "If she truly takes an interest in this kind of life, I’d be happy. But if she’s just restraining herself and endlessly working, with everything centered around work, I wouldn’t be happy."

"You mean you feel a bit sad, right?" Shana said, "The new recruits of the guard army have an average age of 15, basically not exceeding 18 years old. The aim is to exploit the malleability of young people to shape their life and thought habits. And there’s only one reason for that. You know the largest purpose of the guard army is to prevent the rise of Warlords. Have you ever thought about, if the guard army wanted to become Warlords, could anyone on Blue Star stop them?"

Lin Wu nodded in agreement with Shana’s view, turned to watch the sunset, then looked up at the grey clouds to the east and said, "It’s going to snow again."

Shana said, "You haven’t finished your task."

Lin Wu replied, "I don’t really want to complete this bounty mission. What’s the point of finishing it? Now we can’t take on any more missions."
