Chapter 278: Chapter 166: Sewer Turmoil

Continuing to stroll down Exotic Treasure Street and looking at all the strange things, Lin Wu felt grateful he didn’t bring Shana. The items here were so varied that he could hardly restrain himself, not to mention Shana.

Electronic watch, buy. Electronic scale, buy. Campfire addon, buy. Complete set of 2040 football magazines, buy. Complete set of Gentry magazines from 2040, buy...

Overweight backpack? No problem, as long as it didn’t exceed triple the load, he could still carry it all home. In the end, as a prodigal son, Lin Wu spent 80 pistol bullets and bought a bunch of junk on Strange Objects Street. Then, still not satisfied, he used a gas package to indulge in a sauna and a construction materials package to enjoy a buffet hot pot. Finally, with a full belly and a heavy backpack, he teleported out of the market instance.

Luckily the two bases kept their finances separate, or Maya would’ve minced Lin Wu’s bones to boil soup for everyone in minutes.

After returning to the base, Lin Wu couldn’t be bothered to organize and dumped everything from the backpack into the warehouse, only taking out the items he needed. Shana, who had come out of the instance with him, took a liking to the 25 technical books Lin Wu bought. These books might seem dull and uninteresting to most people, but for Shana, they represented the culture and history of the 20th and 21st centuries.

As night fell, Lin Wu rummaged through the warehouse preparing for a late-night snack, but found that the remaining food supplies were insufficient. So, he called out to Shana, "Let’s go, take on a bounty hunting task."

Shana was somewhat surprised, "That’s unusually proactive of you."

"I’ve always been diligent, but you’ve been a bad influence on me with your laziness."

I lose if I argue with you! Shana lightly tapped Lin Wu’s back, packed her bag, and set off into the night with him.

Lin Wu asked, "Did your bounty level drop after you died?"

Shana answered, "I only retained the Bounty Hunter license."

The two had just finished speaking when they encountered a group of Blood Zombies. Around ten Blood Zombie minions charged at them from 30 meters away, which puzzled both of them, as even Frenzy wouldn’t detect them at that range.

"Could it be Blood Mist?" Shana took out her crossbow, suggesting, "We might be in the midst of Blood Mist, and the Heart of Blood Plague has detected us, thus sending nearby zombies to attack us?"

Lin Wu threw 3 Beast Traps on the ground and, while retreating, took out Silencer, "That’s the only explanation." Players generally avoided regions enveloped in Blood Mist; those who didn’t largely ended up dead. Due to the communication breakdown, no one had fully understood the difference between the full-fledged Blood Mist and the one before the update.

Shana said, "If that’s the case, we’re in big trouble." The Blood Mist had already spread to the safe zone of the supermarket church. If it covered the entire base, it meant they were constantly under the Blood Plague’s surveillance, which would send an endless stream of zombies to assault the base. As stated before, zombies wouldn’t damage buildings outside of a siege. However, if the two were sleeping and the zombies received explicit orders, they would definitely destroy the dormitories.

Though Blood Zombies weren’t very strong – hardly enough for Lin Wu to wash down his drink with – but that’s only the case for Lin Wu. Shana would likely get infected if she tried to take them head-on. The best strategy was to keep watch all night, alternating rest, using base alarms, and then using firearms to eliminate the zombies. It also meant that Lin Wu and Shana couldn’t rest at the same time. This wasn’t good news for the two of them.

Lin Wu said, "Let’s see if we can trick Maya into digging out the Blood Heart tomorrow."

Shana disagreed, "As you said, we shouldn’t waste bullets and resources on the concrete factory without understanding the situation around the Sawmill. There’s only one month left."

Tying your own hands in a knot. Lin Wu took care of the last Blood Zombie, "No ambition."

"Hey, this has nothing to do with ambition," Shana replied. "I won’t fall for your reverse psychology. Let’s head back to the base first."

The skirmish with the Blood Zombies lasted a while, and Lin Wu’s level 1 clothes held up, but Shana already suffered frostbite. Luckily frostbite was self-healing, and as long as she took painkillers to prevent bleeding to death, it wasn’t a big issue. After a short rest, they set out again, and as they slid to the entrance of Birch Park, they saw seven or eight zombies approaching in the moonlight from afar.

Shana said, "Ignore them." The two bypassed them from the side, looking back at the zombies who pursued doggedly even after the distance extended beyond 50 meters.

When the two reached the bridge and looked back after leaving the Blood Mist, the pursuing zombies lost their target, wandered around for a while, and then scattered slowly. This also confirmed their previous conjecture.

Lin Wu sighed, "It’s a long night, and I’m not happy to have zombies for company."

Shana said, "I’m glad you indirectly highlighted my importance."

Lin Wu said, "Are you happy to serve just as company?"

Shana bit back harshly, "I also serve as a guide dog."

"Haha." He almost forgot her real talent as he quickly skated up to the manhole cover, "Go on, little dog."

Shana was angry. Why did she have to mention the guide dog? She gave him another chance to tease her. She bared her fangs to scare Lin Wu who acted scared and backed away dramatically, as Shana disappeared down the manhole with a trail of bell-like laughter.

...

The two arrived at Hunter Hall like old hands; poor Shana could only start with level-one tasks. Luckily for her, the task was to kill 30 zombies. Shana, armed with a crossbow, stood at the entrance and mowed them down, coming back with a cheerful smile to pick up another task, while Lin Wu watched jealously.

The second task was also to kill regular zombies. So, Lin Wu could only squat at the entrance and continue to watch Shana breeze through, elevating her to a level 2 Hunter. He thought that would be the end of it, but her first level 2 Hunter task was to kill three Frenzies. Shana took Lin Wu’s Silencer, squatted at the entrance, and sniped the Frenzy 40 meters away, managing to pass the task once again. When the second task was also to kill three Frenzies, Lin Wu couldn’t help it anymore.
