Chapter 276: Chapter 165: Going to the Market_2

"Where’s Shana?"

"Hot springs."

"Tell her I’ll be waiting for her at pillar number four in the square in half an hour."

Lin Wu asked, "Are you guys going to get your nails done?"

Maya, speechless, said, "Shana has a way with haggling, I need to purchase a batch of medical supplies."

"Oh."

Lin Wu was about to walk away when Maya looked to the left of the street and said, "See that group of people 20 meters away? The ones with the red ribbons tied around their left arms."

Lin Wu stood on tiptoes and looked over, "Two women, three men. Who are they?"

Maya said, "They are members of the only mid-sized base in Southward Town, called Chibei. They are said to be troublemakers, with a bad reputation in their town."

Lin Wu said, "Lately, our reputation hasn’t been great either. People smile at us to our face, but behind our backs, they curse us."

Maya said, "Perhaps it’s just prejudice. If you want a dagger, you’re better off going to Strange Objects Street."

Lin Wu, puzzled, asked, "Why not go to Weapon Equipment Street?"

Maya replied, "Because Peanut is over there." Then she left.

"A completely reasonable explanation," Lin Wu muttered to Maya’s departing figure, then pressed his earpiece and called out, "Puppy, come in."

Shana: "What’s up, Piggy?"

Lin Wu said, "Maya wants you to meet her at pillar number four in the square in half an hour."

Shana: "Message received, teammate Piggy."

Juvenile Ghost, always taking advantage!

...

Strange Objects Street was a place where you could find all sorts of miscellaneous items. Because of the variety of bizarre props in the Homeland game, it was the street most frequented by shoppers.

The first stall drew Lin Wu’s attention immediately—it was a flashlight, but not any ordinary flashlight; it was solar-powered. It worked under the sunlight and wouldn’t without it. If you thought this was junk, you’d be mistaken. Like everyone else initially, Lin Wu laughed when he saw it. But Su Shi was furious, as she realized that all solar-powered devices, regardless of size, could be dismantled for valuable solar panel fragments, essential for making solar panels and very rare.

At the second stall, Lin Wu took a liking to a mouse cage. Apart from the sewers, mice were scarce in most parts of the game. Lin Wu bought the mouse cage because as a Hunter, killing one mammal a day earned him a unit of food. He couldn’t beat bears, but surely he could take on mice? He traded one bullet from his pistol for the cage.

Bullets were universally recognized as a hard currency among all players. Pistol bullets were the basic currency, and the exchange rates for different types varied. Before the blizzard, the going rate was one 5.56 rifle bullet for two pistol bullets, and one 7.62 bullet for three pistol bullets. In theory, a .50 bullet was worth five pistol bullets, but they were so rare that nobody sold them.

Today, the exchange rate for pistol bullets had gone up, due to doctor-led reforms making players more cautious when dealing with zombies, opting for ranged attacks instead. With pistols being the mainstream firearms for the foreseeable future, the exchange rate between pistol bullets and 5.56 bullets had become 1:1.

Because of this, Maya had assigned Peanut to Weapon Street to trade pistol bullets for .22 and 5.56 bullets.

The third stall was selling Kad knives. The stall owner had only this weapon to sell, which was why he wasn’t set up on Weapon Equipment Street. It was a very nicely designed and unique-looking dagger with impressive stats, but it only came with a stamina attribute attached.

Lin Wu bought a display mirror at the fourth stall. These were not extremely rare, but also not common. Lin Wu tossed over a pistol bullet and got the mirror in return.

The fifth stall sold Skill Books and seemed to be selling on behalf of a friend or a base, including a Hunter Skill Book. Lin Wu wasn’t in the mood to haggle and traded ten bullets for it. He asked the vendor if there were more Hunter Skill Books, and the vendor told him to come back in an hour.

The seller knew of someone with a Hunter Skill Book and contacted them. Lin Wu traded five bullets for another Hunter Skill Book and relisted it at his own stall, making a profit of five bullets in the process. All in all, Lin Wu had acquired three Hunter Skill Books.

At the sixth stall were books, all manuals: introductions to lathes—which Lin Wu didn’t understand why would need an introduction—along with car maintenance, herbal compendiums, chemical encyclopedias, and world knowledge annuals, a total of twenty-five volumes that made him wonder which bookstore had been robbed.

Lin Wu contacted the stall owner: "25 books in a package, give me a price."

Stall owner: "I’m just selling them off, you can have them for free."

Lin Wu, suspicious, asked, "For free?" He instinctively disliked the man. When a stranger shows unwarranted kindness, it’s always wise to be on guard.

The stall owner asked, "Do you want them or not?"

Lin Wu: "Sure." Let’s see what trick you’re playing.

The stall owner returned to his stall; a male, over thirty, with hair slicked back and sporting a pompadour, dressed in a suit that gave him the air of an executive. Lin Wu noticed a red ribbon tied around the man’s left arm. Clearly, this stall owner was part of Chibei, mentioned earlier by Maya.

The owner took a look at Lin Wu: "Primary intelligence? Dual intelligence?"

Lin Wu retorted, "You check attributes when buying books?"

The owner didn’t beat around the bush: "I am the leader of Chibei Base in Southward Town, my name is Soy Sauce."

Lin Wu said, "I am the leader of Invincible Base, and my name is Invincible."

Soy Sauce was somewhat surprised, "You’re Invincible?"

"No, just kidding. I’m Liangren, from Happy Base of Beitown."

Soy Sauce gave a brief "Oh" before continuing, "Our base is looking to recruit engineers for our production department. Primary intelligence is fine, dual intelligence is preferred, with the only condition being the ability to handle solitude."
