Chapter 221: Chapter 145 Practice Stick

After the interlude, under Shana’s guidance, everyone safely arrived at the countystandard. Lin Wu gave Maya his astonished expression as a result. Maya, however, didn’t say much; she was still the no-nonsense Maya. Maya knew Shana was smarter than her, just ’not focused on proper business.’ Shana could sing, do gymnastics, dance, cook, and so much more. While Maya’s only goal was to become an excellent soldier.

After a brief rest at the supermarket base, Nightmare came back from an outing and, as promised, handed over a Heavy Weapon Skill Book, which made Lin Wu grow a bit of fondness for her. Even if she was a baddie, she was a trustworthy baddie, and that kind of person is worth associating with.

The heavy weapon specialization is a passive skill; to put it simply, the heavier the weapon, the stronger its power. ’Power’ includes effects such as stunning, executing, and knocking down.

The 25-kilogram Vajra spade that Little Knife gave to Snow Egg already had a 25% chance of execution. Moreover, heavy weapons are the only group-attack close-combat weapons, and their effects when swung at enemies are exceedingly good.

Horse Soul’s only conclusion was: In order to advance himself, he needed to find a girlfriend. No, just a woman would do. No, someone like a woman would work. No, anyone human would suffice.

Snow Egg, however, knew how to be gracious; upon receiving the Skill Book, she immediately thanked Lin Wu, who accepted it. As it was getting late, Maya and the others said their goodbyes, returning to Shadow and agreeing to meet again at the Bounty Hunter Hall in three days.

Nightmare and Shana seemed very unfamiliar with each other, barely speaking at all. While Lin Wu was clearing zombies in the supermarket, Nightmare was reading in the library, and Shana had taken her book to read by the fireside outside.

About fifteen minutes later, Lin Wu returned, "Let’s go."

"Where to?" Shana asked as she followed him, reaching the southeast corner washroom of the supermarket lobby, where she found a place to bathe.

The supermarket washroom was stocked with plenty of charcoal; a large pot hung over it, the snow inside completely melted and nearly boiling. Lin Wu had also thoughtfully provided towels, shower gel, shampoo, and other items pilfered from a watchpost. Shana only then realized that while everyone was eating hot pot, Lin Wu had already started preparing.

If Lin Wu promised someone something, he would try his best to keep it. It was no big deal if he couldn’t, but if he could and didn’t, it would weigh on his mind.

Before entering the washroom, Shana asked, "Would you stand guard for me?" There were no people nearby, but zombies could respawn, and if one happened to run into the washroom, it would really spoil the mood.

Lin Wu asked, "Shouldn’t you be suspicious that my eagerness is actually because I want to peep on your bath?"

"If I could see your true face, I’d be willing to make that sacrifice," Shana added. "My dad said one detail is very important when making friends: don’t easily doubt your friend’s character without solid evidence. If sacrificing this one time can reveal your true self, then I can avoid being taken advantage of by you in the future."

Lin Wu questioned, "What else could I possibly take advantage of you for?"

Shana gave a thumbs up, expressing admiration, "You’re the first person who can directly extinguish every spark of emotion I feel. I will never forget you in this lifetime."

Is this what gratitude sounds like? How did she learn to spout nonsense like a Lin?

Lin Wu gestured for her to go ahead, and without saying anything else, Shana entered the washroom. Lin Wu had intended to do as the ancient Norse did and set up firewood in the snow, then boil a pot of water so Shana could soak completely inside. However, considering their presently platonic friendship, Lin Wu felt it was inappropriate. Even if Shana wore a swimsuit, or even soaked in her clothes, it would still be improper.

(In interactions between men and women, it’s important to maintain boundaries. Even if Shana permits it, the book does not allow it. Love without vulgarity is the true positive energy.)

Thirty minutes later, Shana emerged, her face rosy and spirited. Even in the darkness, with the help of the torch, her presence shone brightly before Lin Wu. The clothes were the same, the person was the same, and it wasn’t about washing off dirt, but her vigor was fully restored, bringing out her natural charisma.

"Goodbye," Lin Wu left.

"Hey, what’s the hurry? I wanted to thank you again."

"If you didn’t come out soon, I really would have gone in," Lin Wu said. "Ten cases of frostbite, and it cost me a good amount of medicine." With that, he left without looking back and lay down on the sickbed.

Shana took a book, moved a chair further from the fire, and sat at the door of the infirmary directly opposite Lin Wu. She smiled at him and asked, "Do you want your big sister to read to you?"

Lin Wu sat up leaning against the bed, "What book?"

"Oliver Twist."

Lin Wu said, "I know of it. It’s about an orphan who is adopted by a foster father and becomes a detective."

Shana corrected, "That’s ’The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.’"

"Oh."

During their conversation, Nightmare came out of the library, carrying something in her hand and moving to the outdoors. Lin Wu couldn’t help but get off the sickbed and stealthily follow with Shana to the doorway, only to see Nightmare extend something long, waving it around towards the sky, then placing it against her ear.

Shana pulled Lin Wu back into the infirmary. Lin Wu lay down, and much like a nurse, Shana used the book to hide her mouth, whispering to Lin Wu, "That’s a 21st-century satellite phone, and the thing pulled out is called an antenna. If a satellite phone isn’t supplemented with external equipment, the antenna must be directed toward the satellite’s position in the sky."

Lin Wu asked, "Fortress mission?"

Shana nodded, "It’s likely."

Nightmare approached the infirmary door without asking where the two had been or why Lin Wu was on the sickbed, and said, "I have to leave for a bit, I’ll probably be back around eight o’clock tomorrow evening."
