Chapter 220: Chapter 144: Enemies on a Narrow Road_3
As they spoke, gunfire rang out from the corner office, the flash of gunshots shining through the glass. The flickering light signified that not only were people inside, but they also had assault rifles and a large amount of ammunition.
Suddenly, a window opened, and a burly man appeared at the side. He held a strange gun and aimed it at a large billboard about twenty meters away, standing in the middle of an intersection. Pulling the trigger, the grappling hook shot out swiftly with a rope and pierced through the billboard screen, anchoring onto its metal frame.
The man tightened the rope, secured the gun, and pulled out a cord with a hook from his waist. He attached the hook onto the rope, jumped out of the window, and slid towards the billboard. Using a display mirror, Maya said, "Fortress agent, NPC."
Hearing it was a Fortress agent, Lin Wu, who had been watching the commotion, raised his gun. The second person stood on the windowsill, wielding a submachine gun and spraying bullets inside while attaching a hook onto the rope. Just as the NPC leapt from the windowsill, Lin Wu pulled the trigger, severing the rope attached to the hook. The Fortress agent fell from the second floor, instantly overwhelmed by the surrounding zombies.
Seconds later, a third person appeared at the window, and Maya said, "Player, Nightmare."
Everyone turned their attention to Nightmare, who frowned and said, "How did he get here? How did he get there?" Glancing out of the corner of her eye at Lin Wu, she saw him aiming his gun, waiting.
Noticing her glance, Lin Wu put away his gun, and Nightmare, feeling helpless, said, "Shoot him down."
Lin Wu asked, "What...?"
Nightmare interrupted, "I’ll give you a Heavy Weapon Skill Book."
"Do you have a dagger?"
"No."
Little Knife kicked Lin Wu’s shin, and an irritated Lin Wu thought to himself, "A knife to the head is proof enough of cunning, the ancients did not lie to me."
Raising his gun to aim, he repeated his previous trick just as Nightmare jumped down, severing the rope over twenty meters away. Cursing, Nightmare fell to the ground, and like the NPC before him, was instantly devoured by the zombies.
Anxiously, Nightmare asked, "Who can loot the body?"
Lin Wu replied, "I can."
"Quickly," urged Nightmare.
"But I won’t do it," Lin Wu declared.
Maya, at a loss for words, said, "Why provoke someone for no reason? They couldn’t help it, just playing with you." The last sentence was directed at Nightmare. With such a dense horde of zombies, it was impossible to loot without being torn apart.
Unannoyed, Nightmare thought deeply as she looked at the spot where Nightmare had fallen, pondering, "I hope his revival at North Town was a fluke, otherwise everyone in North Town needs to be careful of this mad dog that kills anyone on sight."
Lin Wu didn’t believe Nightmare’s words. Could a Fortress agent still revive in another town after the Marriage System was introduced?
Maya recalled something, "In the past two days, the radio communication reported two people missing and dead. One had gone out of town to kill zombies and level up, the other went to a base 500 meters away to catch up with a friend. North Town had always been peaceful, and even when deaths occurred, everyone knew how they happened. Only this time, it was reported as missing, dead." Missing, dead referred to when no one knew where the player died or how.
"Let’s leave," said Nightmare. Without taking Nightmare’s equipment, they couldn’t weaken his power.
With the equipment she had, Nightmare had been ahead of most players for a while; if she also took the path of indiscriminate killing, no one could stop her. She could sustain her power through continuous battle.
Lin Wu once thought Nightmare was a bad person, but after comparing her with Nightmare, he felt there might be redeeming qualities about her. However, these were only words from Nightmare’s side, and Lin Wu figured if he ever had the chance, he might as well trust her. He wasn’t killing for equipment; he had made a mistake by taking the words of the base member Nightmare for granted.
The one thing Lin Wu was sure of was that Nightmare and the person called Nightmare were at odds with each other.
Quietly, Maya advised Lin Wu that Nightmare was hiding something from everyone, possibly related to her joining the supermarket base. She cautioned Lin Wu and Shana to be more vigilant.
