Chapter 154: Chapter 118 Bounty Hunter_2
Another pile of envelopes, Lin Wu reached out and took one: "Eliminate the Blood Plague Frenzy in Highland Villa." Ah ha, this mission, this damn thing is just a two-star mission? Reading the explanation, Lin Wu understood, this mission didn’t limit the number of people, didn’t limit the weapons, as long as there were mission participants in the team, the team’s killing of the Blood Plague Frenzy would count as mission success. Time limit: 7 days.
"What’s the prize?" Maya asked.
Lin Wu replied, "Choose one of three: 20 pieces of iron, a random green Skill Book, and an Advanced Car Repair Kit. What garbage."
Maya also drew an envelope: "Kill 100 male Blood Plague zombies. Reward: Tracer Bullet blueprint. Mission description, once you learn to make Tracer Bullet, you can produce Tracer Bullets using a bullet mold. Tracer Bullet effect: low chance of ignition."
"Better than mine," Lin Wu said.
"We should still focus on the present, how to leave this place? Since the NPC said the way out is inside the building, then the exit must be within these three floors," Maya said.
"He also said that we could safely leave only if we’re lucky," Lin Wu said.
"First, let’s do what we can, then leave it to luck. Let’s split up and search, there shouldn’t be any zombies inside the building," Maya said.
...
Not only were there no zombies, there was nothing to scavenge either, the furniture and other items were just decorations, immovable and unbreakable. Having left Shadow Base for a few days, Lin Wu was rarely active in such a well-lit indoor space and his mood was quite good. Flipping to the left, looking to the right. The so-called chance of luck meant that either you stretched out your hand and got it, or you couldn’t find it even by digging three feet into the ground.
"Maya."
"Coming."
Maya came down from the third floor, just to see Lin Wu standing next to the fat uncle, looking at the evacuation map on the wall. Maya approached and asked, "What’s up?"
Lin Wu pointed, "There’s a sewer entrance."
Maya asked again, "So?"
Lin Wu said, "Have you ever seen a fire evacuation map marking a sewer entrance? As if they want people to run underground, huh?"
It seemed reasonable. Maya and Lin Wu followed the map to a basement, Maya alone lifted the manhole cover, and a smell of rot mixed with decay, along with a whiff of hot air, immediately filled the basement.
Lin Wu covered his nose, "There’s the smell of a septic tank."
Maya was curious, "How do you know?"
Lin Wu answered, "I’ve been to a pig farm before, and I couldn’t stand it..." The smells inside were very mixed, but distinct. The first was the scent of a septic tank. The second was the rotting smell that not even zombies have. The third was the steamed-up scent of evaporation after a few drops of rain in the summer. The fourth was oily, a sickening oily smell.
Lin Wu ran upstairs, took deep breaths, and after a while, heard Maya calling him. Reluctantly, Lin Wu had to return to the basement and followed the straight staircase down to the sewer below. Maya pointed at the wall, "Maze."
Lin Wu breathed through his mouth, staring at the convoluted and intertwined map of Left County’s sewer system on the wall, and said, "I can’t understand any of this."
Maya pointed, "We are here, go this way, this way... and we can reach the county mark."
"At least forty turns or more, right?" Lin Wu said.
Maya didn’t speak but closed her eyes, chanting to herself, then opened her eyes, closed them again, and chanted some more. She was dividing the entire maze map into several parts and storing them separately in her own compartmentalized mind, each room with its own code. The process was like clicking on C drive, then My Favorites, then Three-Year Simulation.
Lin Wu knew this was a memory technique called "mind palace." He understood it, but didn’t know how to use it. As long as the brain was sufficient, there was no need to force run triple-A titles; it would crash.
"OK!" Maya pointed decisively, "Let’s go."
Lin Wu’s nose was stuffed with strips of cloth, and seeing Maya so resolute, he hurriedly said, "Shouldn’t we consider this a bit more? It’s so smelly. Our car is still here."
Maya insisted, "Let’s go."
After turning several corners, they encountered a group of zombies. The density was far less than in the county city, but they had the advantage of grouping and surprise. After all, meeting a group of zombies at a turn was very sensorily stimulating.
Maya, silent, started chopping with a knife, and Lin Wu also didn’t dare speak, lest any distraction ruin Maya’s train of thought, and he’d have to spend his life in the sewers. He wondered if it was possible to build a base, could he survive as a Hunter by being sneaky and cutting down Maya.
With these ten or so zombies, what Lin Wu wanted to say was: Damn Dawn is too malicious. The players who could reach the city hall were somewhat skilled and shouldn’t have trouble dealing with ten or so zombies. The purpose of these zombies was to disrupt the players’ memory; even a slight error, and Dawn’s cunning plan would succeed.
After a while more, Lin Wu felt something was wrong, for Maya began to make X marks on the wall with a marker pen. He dared not speak or ask, feeling anxious and the smell was foul, with hot air constantly enveloping them from all sides...
Damn Dawn!
Some time later, Lin Wu saw the X again; Maya was standing in front of it, her eyes closed, her left index and middle finger tapping on her forehead, murmuring to herself. After the ritual, Maya’s eyes snapped open, pointed to the left, and continued forward with her knife.
After some more time, Lin Wu had completely lost his sense of direction, climbing up small steps, through corridors, along sewer channels; he just followed wherever Maya said to go.
Chopping zombies, walking, turning around. The good news was they didn’t see the X again, but the bad news was Maya took more and more time to think. Suddenly Maya happily pointed ahead — there was a vertical ladder, with a manhole cover at the top.
