Chapter 140: Chapter 110: Return to Maternal Home_2
Interestingly, after Lin Wu finished boasting, he began to clarify things in the plainest terms amidst everyone’s stunned gazes, simply explaining the situation. Of course, this sparked an urge in everyone to beat him up, but those who weren’t very familiar with him held back. Little Knife directly stepped on his toes, causing Lin Wu pain enough that he wanted to pop a painkiller on the spot. Unfortunately, as a guest at someone else’s base, he could only trade and was prohibited from using firearms, Skill Books, or drugs.
After a bit of roughhousing, Stone steered the meeting to the main topic, "Nightmare is probably an agent from the Fortress, so her equipment is pretty good. As her most powerful neighbors, it’s only right that we offer help when she needs it. Next, we’ll need a map."
Maya took over, "Alright, Bai Ban has requested supplies, and we’ll be departing in ten minutes. Stone, get me two barrels of gasoline." Her tone still carried the authority of a Deputy Commander from Shadow Base.
During the preparation, Lin Wu wandered around and lured Shana aside, trading her the Swallowtail Dart blueprint, "Don’t say I gave it to you."
Scanning the blueprint, Shana glanced around covertly, "Then what should I say about how I got it?"
Lin Wu, "Not my problem."
Shana snapped angrily, "I had enough gratitude for you to warrant a hug, but now I just want to kick you."
Lin Wu said earnestly, "You’ve been going out on night shifts with me for so long without any benefits, and I’ve always felt bad about it."
Shana replied seriously, "If that’s your reason, then I don’t want your blueprint. We’re all in this together—going on missions, working, and playing games together. No one owes anyone anything. You haven’t bullied me or hogged the resources. Besides, the mission to the secret lab was supposed to be ours, and it’s only because of my lack of strength."
Lin Wu, "I’ve also kept something from you."
Shana, "What is it?"
Lin Wu said, "Dawn mentioned that this mission comes with point rewards."
Shana placed her left hand on her forehead and her right hand on Lin Wu’s shoulder, "You could’ve kept that to yourself."
Lin Wu said, "Hehe, looks like you’ll be working overtime."
"Hmm?"
Lin Wu said, "12 steel bars, at the very least that means dismantling cars for a day."
Shana complained, "You’ve already taken apart all the cars around the church."
Lin Wu, "There are about a dozen scrap cars near the supermarket."
Shana looked at Lin Wu, who quickly added, "I promised Little Knife I’d go with her to farm Blood Plague. I have an idea."
Shana, "What’s the idea?"
Lin Wu said, "There’s a stack of fishing books in the warehouse. The Day After Tomorrow is market day, and you could totally trade the fishing books for steel. As it stands, the players in Left County don’t have many valuable things to trade, so swapping them for materials or basic packs is an option."
Meanwhile, Stone was discussing with Maya on the side, "Maya, you’ll need to focus more on teaching now, and delegate the overall command to Shana. Let Shana arrange the work schedule and locations for Bai Ban. If there’s any change in work, you can contact Shana directly."
Maya nodded, "Got it."
Stone looked at Maya skeptically, "Understand?"
Maya nodded, "Understood."
Stone said, "This winter is going to be tough, and at most, we only have one week left. Given the base’s supply situation, we can just get by. For spring development, the initial reconnaissance and arrangement work for Left County Base will be handed over to you and Lin Wu. The last time Lin Wu and Shana conducted a detailed investigation, I want you to personally make another trip, and see which location among the baseball field, the fire station, and the Sawmill is most suitable for our Shadow."
Maya replied, "Understood."
Stone went on, "Also pay attention to safety, make sure to rest, don’t get so caught up in what you’re doing that you forget to take a break."
Maya nodded again, "Understood."
Stone asked, "The day after tomorrow is market day, do you have any suggestions?"
Maya answered, "The supermarket warehouse has huge space. Currently, the fishing book is a hot commodity, I suggest we trade it for supply packages, serums, whatever can be traded, should be traded. We should take advantage of being the only ones who can quickly obtain serum at the moment and liquidate it as much as possible. Supply packages, materials, bullets, all are fair game."
Stone nodded, "Makes sense. Tonight Little Knife and Lin Wu are going to the tunnel to farm Blood Plague. Is it okay for Little Knife to skip the daytime shift and join Lin Wu on the night shift? They originally went to the tunnel to level up, so now let them work in the tunnel, and try to farm more serum and Skill Books on the last market day before winter comes."
Maya agreed, "That’s possible." Now that she had a Model 41, Maya could take on Frenzy by herself. Besides the 30 bullets that came with the Model 41, there were about 20 rounds of 5.56 ammunition in the warehouse.
...
As Lin Wu drew the zombies away, the day shift car passed by, and he ran to the night shift motorcycle, passing the Sentry Card before the zombies could return to their post. He couldn’t ride a motorcycle, but with a basic understanding of bicycles and cars, and after an hour of instruction from Instructor Maya, Lin Wu had basically mastered the ability to ride. Nevertheless, even having mastered riding, Lin Wu didn’t feel too fond of motorcycles. Not to mention they were too cold when riding into the wind, he was also ambushed by zombies hiding behind roadside trees on his way back to the supermarket, tackled along with the bike, sparking flames as they skid across the road.
Upon returning to the supermarket base, Lin Wu couldn’t be bothered to clear out the zombies in the safety zone. After killing the zombies near his residence, he took the Silencer to the watchtower to clock in for work.
The watchtower looked ordinary. Reaching the top by a spiral staircase, there was a three-meter high rain shelter, and the system considerately provided two chairs and a coffee table. Sitting there with a pot of tea while hunting zombies was quite a joy. Due to the buildings of the supermarket blocking the way, the most effective shooting range was across the North Gate road and the White Birch Forest Park on both sides of the road.
Just after seven o’clock in the evening, Maya finished her shift and went home. Lin Wu rode to work, picked up Little Knife, and headed to the tunnel. The issue with the fire station car would have to be put on hold. Little matters were one thing, but reputation was another. Moreover, the Day After Tomorrow market was important for strengthening the might of the Shadow base, and it was necessary to farm as many Skill Books and serums as possible.
At the supermarket base, the transformer station and hydropower station were on the left side of the bridge. On the right side, there was a cement factory. The task Maya had assigned herself was to do reconnaissance work near the cement factory. If there was a cement factory, why not go there to scavenge for construction materials? That’s because the cement factory had Blood Plague.
The sub-base was quite far from the tunnel, and it was necessary to pass through a Sentry Card that was deliberately troublesome. Maya thought it might be worth considering to farm the Blood Plague at the cement factory. However, the factory area was large, with a high number of zombies, and openly laid out—a stark difference from the easier to defend and harder to attack train carriages in the tunnel. She needed to understand the situation before making a move.
On the other side, in the tunnel, Lin Wu, who was farming Blood Plague with Little Knife, felt like he was just running errands. With Maya, she would handle the small fry while Lin Wu dealt with the Frenzy. After switching to Little Knife, Lin Wu’s role was reduced to luring zombies, drawing a group to Carriage 5 and then sitting by himself, drinking tea from a thermos, and watching Little Knife bully the Blood Zombies.
Compared to Maya, Little Knife was more efficient. Swordsmanship, after all, required several strikes, and with bad luck, even more to achieve a Beheading. Little Knife was different; she could stomp them to death, one by one... When faced with Blood Ferocious Ma, it just meant she had to stomp a few more times. The carriage was narrow, so Little Knife only confronted one or two zombies at a time. As the zombies climbed over the seats to get to her, she would grab them and throw them out.
Strictly speaking, Little Knife had the ability to farm Blood Plague by herself. Of course, the prerequisite was to get an injection; Little Knife’s infection rate rose much faster than Maya’s, but fortunately, serum could ensure she wouldn’t get infected two hours.
Little Knife, busy and engrossed, had no time to chat with Lin Wu, who was idly standing by. Bored, Lin Wu could only flip through the luggage racks, where there wasn’t much luggage, mostly miscellaneous items, and it was a struggle to find even one book—a law book. There were plenty of small items though, like belts, wine, shampoo, etc.
Come the early morning, after enduring a full shift, Lin Wu took a still enthusiastic Little Knife to leave. They had no choice; the system required five hours of sleep per day. Lin Wu, who would be shooting guns during the day and accompanying for practice at night, needed to sleep to ensure better performance with guns the next day.
The real reason: Teaming up with Little Knife was extremely boring.
After escorting Little Knife back to the base, Lin Wu returned to the supermarket base and encountered a man and woman—two players walking at night, which was rare. They politely greeted each other as they passed by, and Lin Wu proceeded smooth sailing back to the supermarket base.
