Chapter 1007: Chapter 436: Hellfire
After half an hour of rest, the battle reignited, with the helicopter directly joining the fight. Hovering near the bridgehead, it strafed with its 30mm cannon, sometimes killing three zombies with a single bullet, while many more zombies lost limbs or were dismembered. In the span of two minutes, using only the helicopter’s cannon, the bridgehead was held.
The helicopter returned to Mountain Base, and after five minutes took off again, with Maya waving goodbye to the people at Mountain Base.
Maya pressed a button, and a signal appeared on the radar screen; after locking onto the signal, the helicopter made a half-turn and flew towards the signal’s location.
People at Shadow Base stood and watched as the helicopter approached from the north, its speed increasing. Maya’s voice came through the intercom: "I’ll go ahead first."
"See you later," everyone replied in unison.
Along with the response, the helicopter, carrying an aviation fuel tank, crashed into the side of the bridge. The helicopter instantaneously turned into a fireball, and the missiles, with their safety pins already removed, detonated on impact, shaking the entire bridge as if it were hit by an earthquake. Countless pieces of debris flew about, and the massive explosion blowed away all the zombies on the scene.
After the explosion, the bridge 400 meters away from the sentry post was broken, leaving a gap that was fifteen meters high and eight meters wide. The exposed steel rebars on both sides of the gap dangled precariously. The two bridge piers near the broken gap were visibly displaced, as if the addition of any extra weight could bring down this damaged section of the bridge.
Furthermore, the area near the blast was ablaze, lighting up the sky.
"You didn’t let me blow up the bridge with explosives, so I used a helicopter with missiles, rockets, aviation kerosene, and explosives to do it. This is the Hellfire Plan."
Everyone stood up from behind cover, gazing at the raging fire rising from underneath the bridge, each checking their injuries.
Shadow Base had one casualty, the deceased: Maya.
...
The fire lasted until six in the morning before it died down. Lin Wu put on a safety harness and went to the broken bridge, finding that the bridge section within 20 meters could collapse at any moment. This was due to the construction technique; in the past, when bridges were built, they were simply constructed. But later, bridge construction more accurately became known as bridge assembly.
Bridge piers and sections were produced and then transported to the site, and with the help of machinery, the bridge was pieced together like building blocks. Of course, it wasn’t so simple, but that’s the general idea. As a result, when one side of the bridge collapses, it does not lead the entire bridge to fall.
Below the broken bridge, zombies were stacking up like a pagoda, under the direction of the intelligent zombies, they gave up the idea of crossing from the broken bridge, instead gathering underneath it and stacking up with their bodies. However, before long, the severely damaged part of the bridge collapsed, crushing countless zombies.
Lin Wu and the others brought a bowl of hot noodle soup to the broken bridge, where the break was neat and clean. Looking down, they saw the zombies beginning to stack up again. The bottom of the broken bridge was 15 meters above the railway bridge, and the center of the river was over 35 meters from the railway bridge in height.
A height of 15 meters is about five storeys, neither too high nor too low. Soon the zombies formed a foundation and began to climb up, forming a second layer, and then a third.
When the pile of corpses reached about 12 meters high, Su Shi pulled the plug sealing the bamboo tube and poured the gasoline inside out, Stone lit a Molotov Cocktail and threw it down. The fire started at the top and slowly spread downwards—after all, zombies’ bodies were virtually devoid of water and could be considered as decent combustible material.
The aroma of roasted meat filled the air, and the corpse mountain subsequently collapsed.
The flaming zombies fled in all directions, with a large number diving into the river and drifting downstream. Why didn’t Maya blow up the bridge a bit closer, placing the break in the middle of the river? The reason was that calculations indicated two extreme possibilities: one where the bridge would not break at all, and another where the bridge piers near the base would collapse. The final blast point was chosen before the main load-bearing segment of the railway bridge, at a 15-degree incline.
You have your clever strategies, and I have Maya’s death.
Even Dawn, as shameless as it was, would not excessively violate the laws of physics. Faced with Shadow’s desperate counterstrike, the zombies ceased their attack and stopped stacking up.
You have Maya’s death, and it has snowflakes falling.
At noon, snow began to fall from the sky. It wasn’t the slow-descending fluffy snow or the tiny snowflakes that were hard to see with the naked eye, but rather snowflakes that fell at a quicker pace. The temperature dropped to 25 degrees, and the view in the distance became somewhat obscured, likely to avoid another embarrassing situation of Dawn’s intelligent zombies being caught by Shadow.
The tow truck reversed, pushing the trailer to the edge of the broken bridge. Two sentries stayed in the trailer, monitoring the activity of the zombies below. The trailer was loaded with a large quantity of combustible materials. On duty were Su Shi and Little Knife.
The other personnel were holding a lunch meeting indoors, and everyone agreed that Dawn would attack again, but how would Dawn launch its assault?
Shana opened the map and explained her view: "Head up the mountain, from two assembling points to the south and north, to flank our rear. The first to suffer will be Mountain Base. If I guessed correctly, the zombie horde will appear near Mountain Base as early as tomorrow afternoon."
Lin Wu said: "I’ve been observing the movement of the corpse horde all morning, noticing that they’re gathering on the riverbank upstream from us, isn’t it possible for them to rely on the current to reach the opposite bank of the river and directly climb up the mountain?"
Snow Egg agreed with Lin Wu’s observation: "Exactly, all the way to the highway bridge, the riverbank is densely packed with zombies, which previously centered around their dispersing points. Now, looking at the dispersing point, there are less than two zombies per square meter. I think they don’t need to reach Mountain Base; they can climb onto the viaduct near the water source."
