Chapter 65: Chapter 65 | Another One

Kain’s footsteps quickened, but his movement remained measured and calculated.

Shield raised high, blade gleaming, body low and steady.

He had to end it.

Now.

Before the second beast was to reach him.

The wounded Jerkkaen in front of him shrieked.

*S-SHRIEK!!!

Desperate, and broken that split through the air and mist around.

It knew.

Its death was nearing.

With a final surge, the beast launched itself forward using its last functioning arm, dragging its body across the forest ground.

Its gaping mouth wide open, razor sharp teeth gleaming as it lunged towards Kain.

Kain Braced in reply as he hunkered behind his shield—like a bulwark—feet and legs tensed as he planted himself towards the ground.

His other arm locked in place, holding the shield—while his other was loose, ready to swing his sword.

*BANG!

The monster’s head slammed into the shield with powerful force.

It flailed and snarled, pushing its head towards the shield—yet it couldn’t pierce Kain’s defense.

"Yargh!" Kain grunted.

With a surge of strength, he shoved his shield forward, slamming the beast’s head aback.

Then, with a smooth and practiced motion—he raised his blade high,

*SLASH!

And cut a clean arc.

Steel through flesh, eidra against corrupted eidra.

Black blood sprayed all over as the beast convulsed violently.

*S-SHRGHK!! *GRRK! *Gurgle!

A choke gurgled cry caught in its throat as it writhed, desperate to scream—but blood flooded its mouth.

It even tried to release mists.

But the damage was done.

"Let’s finish this!" Kain shouted, heart pounding within his chest like drums of battle.

*Crack!

His boots slammed against the ground, closing the gap between him and the crippled trembling beast.

*G-Ghrkk!!

As its last arm swung at him in desperation, Kain ducked low swiftly, raised his shield, and deflected the blow with a sharp

*CLANG!

Then he retaliated with a clean upward slash of his sword.

*SLASH!

The severed limb hit the ground with a heavy thud, black blood flowing outwards the severed limb.

Then, the beast collapsed towards the ground, face-first, all its limbs now destroyed and no longer functioning.

Kain didn’t stop, the beast is not dead yet.

He lunged forward, blade raised in a piercing motion—aimed at the beast’s head.

He was ready to deliver the final blow.

*GROAR!!!

But a thunderous roar shattered and rippled through the mist.

Another beast crashed into the battlefield, its massive silhouette piercing through the mist with an explosive rush, tree trunk like arms slamming into the ground with earth shaking power.

*Rumble! *Rumble!

Before Kain could react, it was already upon him.

*BOOM!

"Argh!" Kain’s shield absorbed the force of the impact, but the raw momentum of the beast’s charge sent him flying.

His sword slipped from his grip, spinning into the air before landing several feet away with a subtle thud—yet his other arm, holding the shield, was gripped tightly.

Kain’s body slammed towards the soil, skidding against the ground as a trail of destroyed soil appeared in his wake.

"Kurgh!" pain surged through his limbs, his arms numb from the blow.

But he gritted as he stood, hands still shaking.

He looked up, vision blurry for a second before settling.

And there it stood.

The new beast was massive.

Taller than the Jerrkaen, broader.

Its arms and legs were like the massive tree trunks, thick and brutal.

Around its mouth were two large curved tusks that looked like it could pierce even the thickest of armors.

And from its rear was a long muscular tail, ending with a large blade-like form that twitched—preparing to strike.

*GROAR!!!

The beast let out a visceral roar, before

*CRACK!

Its tail lashed out, stabbing downward of the already crippled Jerkkaen—finishing it off itself.

With one brutal crunching motion, it tore into the Jerkkaen, ripping it limb from limb as it began to feast upon it—black blood gushing at the corners of its mouth.

And yet it wasn’t enough.

The beast turned its head slowly, finally locking eyes with Kain—blood still dripping down its maws.

It snarled.

It saw him.

Not prey.

Rival.

Eidra coursing through him.

The way Kain stood there, shield raised despite its presence whilst having an unyielding gaze—it made the beast realize.

This one is formidable.

This one was different from the beast it had just killed, more so it realizes that it had just finished the very beast that Kain defeated on his own.

It then began to circle him.

*crack...! *crack...!

Massive and heavy footsteps cracked the dirt below with each rumbling step.

It moved deliberately, prowling with patience, eyes never leaving Kain’s figure.

Its tail flicked back and forth, seemingly waiting for the right time to strike.

Kain breath meanwhile slowed, his muscles tensed beneath his skin.

Still, his left arm throbbed from the blow below as he shifted his gaze on the sword, a few feet away—laying on the ground.

The beast noticed the glance. It knew.

Then stillness filled the air, like the calm before a thunderous storm.

Seconds passed...

*SNAP!

A sudden snap from the beast’s tail pierced through the stillness.

In a flash it coiled its tail around a severed limb from the Jerkkaen’s corpse and hurled it at Kain like a thrown boulder.

The projectile tore through the air swiftly.

Kain instincts kicked in as he dove to the ground shoulder first, rolling just as the limb crashed behind the tree behind him—squelching in impact.

As he rolled, his body skidded as he extended his arm, fingers stretched—before finally grabbing the hilt of the sword that flew from his hand earlier.

His fingers curled tight as he raised the blade.

The instant he rose to stand, a roar echoed through the air.

The beast was already mid-strike, its tail swung low and fast in a piercing motion that would tore right through Kain’s chest.

Kain brought up his shield just in time.

*CLANG!

The blade on the tail clashed against metal, throwing up sparks.

The force of the blow nearly knocked the shield from Kain’s grasp, but he held firm, digging his boots on the ground.

He gritted his teeth, blade now back in his hand.

"Yargh!"

He swung as hard as he could

*CLANG!

but was ultimately parried by the beast’s bladed tail—

*skrrrrrrrr!!

a resounding scraping sound filled the air as Kain and the beast’s tail pushed against each other.

The fight had just begun and Kain’s mettle will be tested once again.
