Chapter 64: Chapter 64 | Unbreakable
*Clang! *Clang! *Bang!
The sharp sounds of swords slicing through the open air, echoed through the training grounds.
Metal clanged against each other, boots skidding against stone, and the occasional grunts from ragged breaths—filled the air with the sound of both discipline and hard work.
Soldiers, around the training ground, moved with rhythm—their movements powerful, precise, and with unity.
At their front, overlooking them, was the cold captain.
His arms crossed behind his back as a worn training sword was resting at his side.
His eyes sharp as he inspected each soldier, making sure that each performed with utmost precision and strength with their swings.
Then...
*Thud! *Thud! *Thud!
Rapid sounds of footsteps echoed through.
"Captain!" a soldier shouted, sprinting across the courtyard.
"It’s the boy!"
The captain didn’t flinch yet his brow twitched slightly as he turned slight—a curious expression evident on his face as he raised one brow.
"What boy?" he asked promptly.
"This boy!" the soldier replied, extending a small device, a projection device that displayed a flickering live feed in front of the captain.
On it, the image was clear as day.
It was Kain.
Shield raised. Swords drawn.
And standing before him was a hulking beast cloaked in mist.
A jerkkaen.
The captain leaned in subtly, his face unreadable.
*Rustle...
He ruffled his thick beard with his hand as his lips parted to speak.
"...A Jerkkaen as your first real opponent after training?" he muttered before continuing.
"The boy’s gone bold!"
*Thud! *Thud! *Thud!
Countless soldiers crowded nearby, eyes wide with disbelief as the image flickers before them.
Kain, once the timid boy they all remembered, now stood firm as he raised both his shield and sword as he faced a towering beast.
"Hey, isn’t that Kain!?"
"You’re right, And he’s going head to head with a Jerkkaen?"
"No way... can he even survive that?"
The murmurs grew louder and louder, rippling across the training yard.
But it didn’t last long.
"What are all of you doing!?" the captain shouted loud, his voice thunderous as it cut clean through the noise.
"Back to your training! We have a war looming on the horizon!"
The soldiers flinched in unison as they scrambled back into position.
*Clang! *Clang! *Crack!
The sounds of training then resumed, swords swinging and voices grunting.
The captain looked away from the projection, remembering the words of the soldier earlier.
No way... can he even survive that?
He then muttered in reply to that taught.
"...He will and he must."
His eyes then drifted to the side, towards the weapon racks near the wall.
Among the neatly arranged swords and spears was the old iron pole, dented and worn from use.
The very one he’d use to beat the hesitation out of Kain.
To knock fear back down everytime it tried to raise the suffocating fear within the boy’s chest.
He stared at it for a moment, his grip tightening around his own blade.
Then, a faint smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth.
"Go on then," he whispered.
"Show them how much pain it took just to stand."
"Show them how you earned that step."
===
*BANG!
With a loud bang, Kain’s shield caught another crushing blow from the beast’s serrated arms.
"Urgh!" his grunt echoed into the mist as the force pushed him sideways but not enough to make him off balance.
Using the momentum, he slipped towards the side and attacked, his blade flashed as it carved a deep cut into the beast’s leg.
Move.
Block.
Counterattack!
"Just like I was taught!" Kain grunted under his breath as he breathed hard, recalling every drill beaten into memory and body by his mentor.
His feet moved deliberately, eyes sharp and glowing faintly with eidra enhanced vision.
*SHRIEK!
The beast shrieked from the attack, staggering as black blood gushed and sprayed from its leg.
*Crash! *Thud!
It reeled, lashing widely in pain—but its movement had gone sluggish.
Kain saw it with his very eyes.
The slow twitch.
The delayed wind up of its next attack.
He could read it now.
As the beast struck again, Kain ducked low and dove beneath its wide open legs.
*Skrrk!
His boots scraped across the dirt in a fluid slide between its legs.
Then a snap, his arm shooting forward—driving his blade deep into the muscle of the other leg of the beast.
The monster reeled once again, both legs buckling under its own weight.
*CRASH!!
It crashed down to its knees as a visceral shriek escaped from its throat.
But it didn’t fall completely, the battle is not yet won.
With one last effort, it slammed both of its long serrated arms into the ground, supporting itself as its legs were incapacitated.
*SHRIEK!!!
With a shriek, the beast whipped both of its arms in a horizontal arc, aiming to slice Kain with its long serrated guillotine-like arms that came from both sides.
But Kain remained focused, eyes locked on the movement of the beast.
He didn’t look back or twitch.
He leaped backwards, shield raised as he began to brace his body.
He remembered the voice of the old captain from his training, harsh and relenting.
Like a wall.
Be a wall.
Like a bulwark.
Unbreakable.
*BANG!!!
The impact from the beast’s strike came with a violent bang as both of its arms collided against the sturdy iron of Kain’s shield, one from each side.
The force rattled his bones, sending a shock down his spine.
But it didn’t make him falter.
He gritted his teeth while his arms tensed as his muscle began to burn.
His eidra fueled him, a powerful color of amber.
With a powerful swing, Kain’s blade cleaved upward in a clean arc,
*SLICE!
Completely slicing straight through one of the beast’s arms—the severed limb spun briefly before falling down the ground as black blood sprayed all over.
*SHRIEK!!!
The monster wailed, collapsing onto one side—towards its remaining arm as it struggled to stay upright, expelling thick clouds of mist in panic.
*Tshhh
Kain exhaled, steam rising from his lips. His shield remained raised, blade still sharp and steady as he took a step forward.
Steady.
Guarded.
Not in a rush.
Then—
Another shriek.
This one, deeper in pitch.
Not from the beast before but one from deeper in the mist.
Another one’s coming.
Kain’s eyes widened, heart hammering again, but with urgency.
He had to end it now, he must finish the beast before him.
Before the second one arrives.
