Chapter 59: Chapter 59 | The Scent of Flowers

*Cough!

Hector coughed violently as the mist from the surrounding, clawed its way into his lungs.

It was cold, dry, and unnatural.

It stung his throat with every breath he took, forcing him to stagger and look around.

The hazy mist around him began to thicken like a white wall.

Then a sudden unnatural gust began to throw itself towards Hector.

*FWOOSH!!

Eyes already watering, Hector threw both of his arms to shield his face from the gust, his boot grinding and skidding against the underbrush below as he was pushed back a few inches.

Then, ominously, the gust of wind suddenly died.

Replaced by an eerie stillness and quietness.

No Birds.

No footsteps.

Nothing but pure eerie silence.

Then a figure began to emerge from within the white fog around him.

The figure walked towards him.

Slow.

Steady.

Haunting.

"My Dear Hector..."

The voice was soft and warm.

Familiar.

It floated through the mists and towards Hector, a voice of long lost and dear to him.

"That voice...!" Hector’s breath caught in his throat, his heart pounding in remembrance.

The figure within the mist drew closer, her face and shape becoming fully cleared.

A woman.

Someone Hector knew.

Someone he loved.

Someone he held dear.

It was his mother.

His arm began to shake as he reached for the wrapped object attached on his hip.

For a brief moment, he seemed vulnerable.

Yet he stopped shaking.

He knew better.

He leaned down on the ground to grab a rock—then snapping his arm forward to throw it towards the figure of his mother.

The mother who had died in the arms of Hector.

Her tears, her suffering, her ragged breath.

Hector knew it all.

And he had accepted the fact that she had already died.

*fwoosh! *Clack!

As Hector threw the rock—it travelled and passed through the figure as if the figure of his mother wasn’t real—obviously.

Then it dissipated, the figure of his mother vanished into the mist

Hector paused as he saw the figure dissipate, then he furrowed his brow, jaw tightening as he grew angry.

"Show yourself!" he shouted angrily.

Before flinching.

*SHRIEK!!!

As a high pitched shriek arose from within the mist—rustling the leaves around Hector.

The environment shifted, the mist rippled with the roar as Hector leaped backwards in instinct—his hands already at the wrapped object.

With quick movement, he began to unwrap it quickly, removing the cloth and everything—lights of green escaping through the linen as Hector removed each fold of cloth that covered it.

Yet before he could completely unwrap it, Hector’s senses detected a shift in his surrounding—making him snap his eyes to his side.

Eyes widening to what he saw.

A massive serrated arm that looked like a massive guillotine was coming right at him, threatening to slice him in two.

Thanks to Hector’s heightened senses due to his eidra, he managed to duck right just in time towards the grown to completely dodge the attack.

*WHIP!

With a loud whip, the attack just barely missed Hector’s head by a few inches.

He then rolled to the side—continuing to unwrap the object.

"Why do you have to wrap it this thick, old man?" Hector sighed, his arms shifting and moving as he further removed more folds from the wrap.

Yet the beast was relentless—its figure emerging from the mist to lounge at Hector.

*SHRIEK!!

It shrieked as its dove towards Hector head first, its massive serrated mouth going for a lethal bite.

"M-Meat!!" bellowed the beast as it dove towards Hector.

Yet Hector had already fully unwrapped the object.

The blade that looked like a massive thorn gleamed bright green—veins of wood pulsated along its shaft along with flowers that swayed...

As Hector swung it towards the incoming beast.

"Eat this!"

*BANG!!!

With a deafening and powerful bang, the blade had struck true on the beast’s head—sending it reeling towards the side with a loud shriek of pain.

*phew...

Letting out a sigh of relief, Hector held the sword in his hands for a brief moment—before raising it and plunging it deep towards the earth.

*thump... *thump... *Thump... *THUMP! *THUMP!!

The blade pulsated as if it was alive—multiple times it thumbed as the ground around where it was plunged began to slightly crack as small tendril-like wood veins began to emerge.

*Crack... *BANG!

With another bang, the tendril-like veins slithered like snakes towards the beast in a quick manner, wrapping on both of the beast’s legs.

The beast is now immobilized.

Yet it tried to struggle, using both of its massive serrated guillotine-like arms to hit the thick roots that wrapped on its legs very tightly.

*SHRIEK!! *Bang! *Bang!*SHRIEK!! *BANG! *BANG!!!

The hits of the beast made deafening bangs against the wooden roots on its legs, slowly but surely cutting them away.

Yet it was inevitable and its struggles were useless.

As the beast continued to remove parts of the roots from its legs—even more roots began to emerge and replace it.

"This is the price for desecrating my mother’s image," Hector muttered to himself before closing his eyes to focus.

As soon as he closed his eyes, green eidra began to surround his body, like shimmering leaves along the wind.

He could feel the wind shimmering around him, he could hear the leaves swaying around, he could smell the earth beneath him.

"Become wood... Become air... become the leaves... become the flower... become the earth itself." Hector muttered.

Before plunging his sword deeper in the ground with a resounding crack.

As soon as Hector plunged the blade deeper, the roots immobilizing the beast, slithered even more upward—covering the entire body of the beast.

The sound of flesh being pierced then echoed in the surrounding as all the roots that surrounded the beast began to one by one plunge inside the beast.

The beast shrieked and convulsed in pain, as the roots continued to plunge deeper into its body with relentless force—slithering their way deeper and deeper until the roots pierced everything.

Then, with a resounding flash of green, flowers sprouted along with the roots—covering the beasts inside with flora that bursted outwards from its mouth in a massive bang.

The roots themselves then begin to settle as they slowly but surely escape through the beast’s gaping mouth, creating a macabre display of both beauty and death.

The beast couldn’t even let out a dying scream as the flowers and roots blocked it throat completely.

Then, the scent of flowers permitted the air, the mist dissipated as the ground Hector stood in was replaced by beautiful flowers that weren’t there to begin with.

Hector stood up, yanking the sword from the ground—stumbling as he struggled to breath.

He used too much eidra.

Still, he took a step forward.

"Now that’s done..." Hector wiped the sweat over his brow as he walked forward,

"Now where’s everyone?"
