Is It Wrong To Love My StepBrother Alpha Mate? -
Chapter 90: The Tests
Chapter 90: The Tests
For the first time since he was born, Ronan was being a difficult baby.
He cried throughout the night and refused to sleep no matter what Helena tried to do.
So when Rae knocked on her door, telling her that Dora had arrived, it took all her willpower to roll off the bed and get dressed.
Ronan once again burst into tears when Helena tried to leave him with Rae.
Eventually, she was forced to bring the now-sleeping boy with her to meet with Dora on the rooftop.
"I’m sorry, but he wouldn’t stop crying," Helena told Dora as she greeted the Witch.
"No worries, dear," Dora said. "The magic we will be using today won’t harm him. If anything it will soothe him."
Helena nodded as she fixed the straps on the harness that kept Ronan on her chest.
"How much magic do you normally use?" Dora asked.
"None," Helena admitted. "Since Dad died I’ve actually repressed that part of me. I do use it every month at least since holding back the power makes me feel itchy."
Dora nodded as she circled Helena.
"That’s the magic trying to get out," Dora explained. "Our magic doesn’t like being denied, just like your wolf needs to go for a run."
Helena nodded, understanding what it was like.
’It’s a good thing my magic doesn’t have a voice or personality,’ Helena told Hera. ’Or she’d be like you.’
’Intelligent and entertaining?’ Hera asked.
’Annoying and a know-it-all all,’ Helena answered.
She felt as Hera blocked her out in annoyance, making Helena laugh.
Dora raised an eyebrow but said nothing else.
"When you use your magic, do you feel any exhaustion?" Dora asked.
"No," Helena answered. "But maybe I just don’t use enough of it."
"It’s more likely that your power is so vast that you don’t feel the effects of simple spells," Dora said as she grinned at Helena. "Some powers are trained, but the greatest are born with us. You’re the Grand Warlock’s heir, your magic has always been expected to be great."
Helena shifted on her feet, unsure of what to say.
"Your father taught you magic before he died, I’ve seen you use it," Dora said. "Summon that cup over."
Helena let out a breath of relief, he raised her hand and the cup floated to them, gently setting itself down at Dora’s feet.
"I see you didn’t forget," Dora said, grinning. "Let’s try something harder."
Dora looked around, searching for something.
She stopped as she spotted a pot perched near the wall.
"I don’t know how much about magic you remember, but most witches and wizards can only access basic magic and a single stream of higher magic," Dora explained.
Helena nodded, she vaguely remembered her father teaching her about this.
"As a member of the Grand line you are unique, it is not unusual for you to be able to access all higher magics," Dora said.
She pointed at the pot and smiled.
"Try to strike it with lightning," Dora told Helena.
Helena nodded.
She needed a little bit more concentration this time, but without much effort, the pot was struck with lightning.
"For someone that has not used her magic for years that’s quite impressive," Dora said, nodding in approval. "It usually takes a lot more to do magic like that."
Helena smiled, proud of herself.
"Now, can you teleport that cup to the edge of the pool?" Dora asked Helena.
Helena did so with the same effort it took her to summon the lightning.
"Interesting," Dora hummed as she pulled out a piece of paper from her pocket and handed it to Helena. "Cast this spell."
"What’s the spell for?" Helena asked Dora.
"Why do you need to know?" Dora challenged her.
"How do I know what my magic is being used for? How can I cast a spell without knowing what the results will be?" she asked Dora.
Dora smiled and nodded.
"That was a test, wasn’t it?" she asked her grand-aunt.
"It was, and you passed," Dora confirmed. "But you’ll still need to cast the spell. It’s one that summons rain, Sunfire has been experiencing a drought and I was supposed to cast it, but what better way to test your magic than this? Reed it three times, feel the pull of your magic."
Helena nodded, understanding what was being asked of her.
Helena took a deep breath and began to read the spell. With every word in the foreign language that she spoke, she could feel as if a bit of her magic was being taken.
By the third time she’d repeated the spell, the clouds went dark and a drop of rain fell on her face.
She was quick to move to the covered area of the rooftop, sheltering her son who continued to sleep despite all the magic happening around her.
"Impressive," Dora said, nodding in approval. "I think you’re ready for a more complicated one. I think Ronan is ready to take a nap with his grandma."
As if summoned, Alyssa appeared.
"We were watching," Alyssa said with a shrug.
"Did you know I could do all this?" Helena asked her mom.
"I was there when your grandfather tested your limits," Alyssa told her daughter as she took Ronan. "He was more than impressed with your power."
"Now for a really difficult spell," Dora said as Alyssa gave her daughter a smile and retreated to the side. "This one will summon a particular Witch, she isn’t a relative but she’s an ally."
Helena took the new piece of paper, this one contained a longer spell than the last.
"Three times?" Helena asked.
"Three times for every spell, it’s like a safety. If you feel that the spell is taking too much from you, just stop, but once you complete the spell there’s no way to stop the magic from taking hold," Dora explained.
As Helena read the spell she could feel each word pulled from her magic more and more.
While it wasn’t as easy as the past spells, it didn’t drain her. By the time she was done, she had to wipe her forehead as a drop of sweat threatened to fall.
"Seems you’re just rusty," Dora hummed.
"How do we know if the spell worked?" Helena asked.
"We don’t, at least not until the Witch we summoned arrives," Dora told Helena. "Come, I’m sure you’re hungry, let’s grab breakfast."
