Chapter 66: Situation Report
"Romeo," Helena groaned as Romeo kissed her neck. "We can’t not right now."
"Why not?" Romeo groaned as he held Helena close to him. "We know we’re mates."
"Because we have a pack to take care of," Helena hissed.
As much as she wanted to be in his arms and for them to be fully mated, they still had the matter of their recently attacked pack.
"I need you," Romeo groaned.
"You have me," Helena sighed as she rested her head against his. "But our pack needs us."
Romeo sighed and shook his head.
"I just want to be fully mated to you," Romeo groaned.
"And we will be," Helena said as she kissed his lips. "But Rome, you have a job to do, a pack to lead."
Romeo nodded as he kissed her again.
"I was so worried I’d lose you this time," Romeo confessed as he let out a breath. "When I sensed them coming, I just had to protect you."
"Romeo, I can protect myself," Helena sighed. "I heal faster than the normal wolf, and you know, magic."
She hadn’t practiced magic in a long time. It was part of her father’s legacy, and he was the one guiding her.
"You haven’t used magic since your Dad died," Romeo sighed.
"Doesn’t mean I can’t use it," Helena shrugged. "If I have to, I will. You have to trust that I can take care of myself, Romeo."
Romeo kissed her, and it wasn’t like any other kiss they’d shared in the past.
This one felt desperate, as if he was trying to remember the feel of her lips on his.
"I will never stop worrying about you, Helena," Romeo whispered against her lips. "You will always be my priority."
Helena sighed and shook her head.
It was the fact that Romeo would put her ahead of the pack that made her worry.
"Call your Beta and Gamma to the office," Helena told Romeo. "We need to know the damage, and we need to know where those wolves came from."
Romeo nodded as he closed his eyes and sent out orders.
While he sent out the commands, Helena took the time to speak to her wolf.
’How much worse will he get when he finds out?’ Helena asked Hera.
’A lot worse,’ Hera said as she faded back into Helena’s mind to rest.
Despite Romeo having her dragged away from the fighting, she and Hera were exhausted. It was a good thing Romeo hadn’t insisted on the mating, at least this reprive would give Hera time to rest.
"They’ll meet us in the office," Romeo said with a nod. "I’ve asked Dad and the former leadership to join us as well as your uncle."
"Let’s go," Helena said as she unwrapped herself from Romeo’s hold. "The sooner we get to the bottom of this the sooner we can get back to what we were doing."
"I can get behind that," Romeo purred as he gave her ass a squeeze, making Helena yelp. "Our new room is set up."
"The Alpha suite?" Helena asked as they walked down the stairs, their fingers interlocked.
"Yep, I already knew you’d be my mate," Romeo shrugged. "There was never going to be anyone else, Helena."
Romeo smiled and gave his hand a squeeze.
When they arrived in the Alpha’s office everyone was already waiting for them.
Romeo stood by the door, staring at the empty Alpha’s seat.
It stood like a throne at the head of the long conference table.
"Alpha," his father greeted him with a slight bow.
Romeo blinked as he continued to hold onto Helena’s hand.
"Have you forgotten that you just had your Alpha Rite?" Helena teased as she pulled her mate into the room, shutting the door behind them.
She led Romeo to the head of the table and gestured for him to sit.
Romeo shook his head and looked at the people in the room.
Among those he had summoned were several Alphas and their high-ranking wolves. Helena smiled at the sight of more women in the room.
"Can we get this over with?" Kade groaned. "I have a new mate that I need to get to."
Romeo glared at Kade, making Helena laugh.
They both knew who Kade was mated to and Romeo did not want to think of his sister being newly mated.
"Has she moved into your rooms?" Helena giggled.
"Okay, enough talk of my sister and her mate," Romeo grumbled.
"You do know that your sister is now mated to your Gamma. You’re never going to hear the end of it," Helena chuckled.
Raul cleared his throat, making Helena laugh.
She knew they were going off-topic, and it might have been odd for all their guests to hear their banter, but it was fun.
"Right," Romeo said as he straightened himself and gestured for everyone to sit.
To Helena’s surprise, instead of sitting her to his left, he made her sit to his right, a spot traditionally reserved for the Beta.
"As you all know, we were attacked today," Romeo announced. "It wasn’t the first, but it was probably the largest attack we’d had since the threat began. Gamma Kade, what do we know?"
Kade stood up and took out a notebook.
"During the Alpha Rite run, we were attacked by fifty wolves from an unknown pack. They targeted the Luna first, hoping to incapacitate the Alpha," Kade said, making Helena flinch. "Of the fifty that attacked, thirty are dead, five are in our custody, while the remainder seemed to have escaped."
"How many casualties on our side?" Helena asked, closing her eyes.
"Five dead, Luna," Kade said with a grim tone.
"How?" Helena asked. "How did they die?"
Kade hesitated. He looked at Romeo as if asking him for permission to speak.
"I asked you a question, Gamma," Helena said, adding a bit more force to her tone. "How did they die?"
Kade tried to resist the order, but he could do nothing.
"They died during the initial wave, from the wolves that managed to slip through after attacking you and the Alpha," Kade said as he bowed his head.
