Is It Wrong To Love My StepBrother Alpha Mate? -
Chapter 52: More Attacks
Chapter 52: More Attacks
’How many?’ Helena asked through the pack link while Romeo focused on driving.
’So far, we have twenty,’ Gamma Norton responded. ’Are you near?’
’Two minutes out by car,’ she said as she estimated how long it would take them to get to the border. ’How many do we have from our side?’
’I was leading a patrol of six wolves, two from each territory,’ he reported to Helena.
Seven against twenty were not good odds even with the Gamma.
’Is anyone else on their way?’ she asked, sending the question as far as possible through the link.
’I’m coming with twenty more warriors,’ Kade said through the pack link. ’And Daniel.’
With a Beta, two Gammas, and two Alphas their odds would be a lot better even if more wolves arrived.
’Marco and I are gathering more men,’ she heard her stepfather say through the link. ’Jeremiah and his Beta are doing the same as well.’
"Do you think they’ll attack the Red River side?" Helena asked Romeo.
"We have another contingent of warriors there ready to go," he told Helena as he parked the car. "Let’s go, and please no unnecessary risks."
Helena leaned forward and kissed him.
"I’ll be safe, I promise," she swore before slipping out of the car.
Helena and Romeo heard the fighting as soon as they arrived. The sounds of growls and breaking bones echoed across the otherwise silent forest.
"Let’s go," Helena said as she broke out into a jog.
They hadn’t gone far when an average-sized brown wolf came charging through the trees. He was headed straight for Helena.
She quickly positioned herself to take it down when a black blur intercepted the wolf.
Romeo jumped between Helena and the wolf, pushing it to the ground.
"The fuck?" Helena asked. "I had it."
She heard its neck break as the wolf shifted back into its human form.
"You don’t have to," he grumbled as he looked at the dead human.
Helena gasped as she looked at the body.
"She’s young," she felt her heart breaking for the young she-wolf that lay dead on the ground.
"We need to get to the bottom of this," Romeo hissed.
Helena couldn’t agree more. The young she-wolf smelled rouge, but what could someone so young have done to earn them banishment?
She knew that most packs weren’t as forgiving as theirs, many would banish their members for as little as refusing their alpha.
"We also need to increase our efforts in finding innocent rouges," she told Romeo as they continued to run.
"After the rite, love, after the rite," Romeo said as they walked into a clearing where a battle raged.
Shifted and unshifted wolves fought, many already bloody.
"Go, help them," she told Romeo as he went sprinting through the clearing, taking down one wolf as soon as he joined the fray.
Helena searched for where she could help.
She spotted two wolves attacking Gamma Norton, and that’s where she went.
The quickly grabbed one while it was otherwise engaged and snapped its neck. That was the cleanest and fastest way to kill a wolf, and Helena did not want them to suffer unless they truly deserved it, plus, they didn’t have the luxury of time.
"Thanks," Gamma Norton said as he momentarily shifted back after subduing the remaining wolf.
"Incoming!" someone shouted as another wave of attackers, both in wolf and human form, came at them.
With the help or Romeo and Helena, they dealt with the new group quickly, even managing to knock a few out.
Helena heard the thundering of paws in the distance as she let out a sigh of relief.
Kade and Daniel arrived with the additional wolves, helping them tear through the some fifteen wolves left alive.
Helena stepped back as the warriors took away some of the attackers, those they’d managed to subdue, while Romeo, Neil, Daniel, and Norton took care of the remaining wolves.
"Rouges," Helena sighed as she scented the bodies that lay all around them. "And so young."
Over half the wolves that lay dead around them looked younger than her. Most were probably barely out of their teens.
"What could have caused them to be banished from their packs?" a warrior next to Helena asked as he reached for one of the bodies.
"I don’t know," Helena admitted.
When all the remaining wolves had been gathered, Romeo jogged up to Helena and pulled her into his arms.
"I’m safe," Helena told Romeo as she leaned her head against his chest.
"Norton told me about how crucial you were earlier during the fight," he said as he kissed the top of her head.
"I told you I’d help," she chuckled.
Romeo was no stranger to how powerful Helena was, but she knew he wasn’t aware of just how extensive her training had been as a warrior.
"Let’s get them back. I want to talk to the survivors," Romeo said as he glaced at the wolves being ushered into trucks with some warriors.
A few of their wolves lay on the ground, being tended to by doctors.
"How many did we lose?" Helena asked.
She’d felt a few pack links break during the fight.
"I’m sorry, Helena," Romeo said as he pressed his forehead to hers and kissed her lips. "Two from Stonehill, one from Black Moon, and one from Red River."
Helena closed her eyes and nodded.
No wonder two of the pack links breaking felt stronger, they were from her pack.
"We should get home. You need to rest," Romeo said as he wrapped his arm around her waist and guided her back to the car.
The walk and the subsequent drive home were silent.
Helena was bothered by the fact that the dead wolves were all so young.
When Romeo parked outside the pack house, there was a lot of commotion.
"They’re bringing the captured wolves to the cells and burning the bodies of the dead," Romeo explains to Helena. "Let’s get you upstairs."
"No," Helena suddenly said in a firm voice.
"What do you mean no?" he asked her.
"I want to talk to them, the survivors," she said. "Let’s start with the ones from today."
