Is It Wrong To Love My StepBrother Alpha Mate? -
Chapter 44: More Attacks
Chapter 44: More Attacks
"Come on," Romeo said as soon as Helena stepped out of Rae’s room, intertwining their fingers.
Helena had half the mind to pull away from him, but his hold, no matter how innocent, comforted her.
"Aren’t you worried people will see us?" Helena asked as they walked down the stairs to the ground floor of the pack house where the Alpha’s offices were located.
Romeo simply shrugged before lifting her hand to his lips and kissing her knuckles.
"Let them see," he said with a delicious smirk on his lips that Helena wanted to kiss.
Helena rolled her eyes, earning a glare from Romeo.
"Give me anymore attitude, and I’ll kiss you right here in the hall, love," Romeo threatened.
"You wouldn’t dare," she gasped.
"Oh darling, you know I would," he said in a deep voice filled with lust.
"Let’s just go," Helena said as she pulled his hand and led the way.
They stopped in front of Raul’s office and neither of them let go.
"Do you wanna knock?" she asked Romeo.
"Yeah," he grumbled, nodding before knocking on his father’s office.
"Enter," Raul’s familiar voice called from the other side.
Romeo pushed the door open and pulled Helena in with him.
There were a lot fewer people than Helena had expected in the office. It was only her step-father and her uncle in the room.
They glanced at their intertwined hands but didn’t say anything.
"You called us?" Romeo asked as he tugged Helena with him to sit on the couch.
Raul nodded before looking at his brother-in-law.
"Jeremiah has news," Raul said grimly.
Both Helena and Romeo turned their attention to Jeremiah, who was now frowning.
Jeremiah hesitated for a second, as if he wasn’t willing to share the information with his niece and step-nephew.
"I promised I would involve them," Raul told Jeremiah in a stern tone. "And you would have told Helena anyway. What difference does telling Romeo make?"
"None," Jeremiah sighed and shook his head. "We’ve had two more attacks."
"Since last night?!" Romeo asked, stunned.
Jeremiah nodded slowly as he approached the map Raul had installed in his office. An office that would be Romeo’s in a few days.
"You should have that map updated," Helena said as she tugged on Romeo’s hand. "Red River is part of Blackmoon now, and Stonehill has been on Blackmoon maps since Mom and Dad got married."
Romeo nodded as he placed a kiss on he head.
Raul sighed, but he was smiling as he watched the interaction between the pair.
"The first attack was last night, here," Jeremiah said as he pointed directly at what would have been the border between the Stonehill and Blackmoon territories.
Helena studied the junction that would have been a blind spot in the past.
"It’s a good thing we removed the patrols along our border and decided to merge them as one," Jeremiah praised. "Had there still been patrols in the area, some of the rogue wolves would have slipped through."
"They were all rogue this time?" Helena asked.
The wolves that had attacked them weren’t rogue or packless wolves. They were wolves that had a pack and that probably got their order to attack from a chain of command.
"Yes," Jeremiah confirmed. "That made them much easier to subdue. They couldn’t coordinate in wolf form since they don’t have a pack link."
Helena nodded as she studied the map.
"How many?" Romeo asked.
"Fifteen," Jeremiah said, making Helena gasp in shock.
"How did fifteen rogue wolves manage to coordinate and decide to attack at the same time?" Romeo hissed.
There were very few rogue wolves. Most of them preferred isolation as they felt they couldn’t trust other rogues. Most rogue wolves were kicked out of their packs as punishment.
Some managed to find a new pack, while others whose crimes were too vile for packs to stomach couldn’t find new packs to join.
"How many dead?" Raul asked.
It seemed that this was the first time Raul was hearing the details of the attack.
"Ten. We managed to capture five," Jeremiah informed them.
Based on her Uncle’s expression, Helena could tell that he wasn’t satisfied with the result.
"Where are they being kept?" Helena asked.
"At Stonehill’s prison, it’s larger than Blackmoons, but I fear we’re reaching capacity," Jeremiah sighed.
"We can host them here," Raul confirmed.
"Have they been interrogated? Do we know why they attacked?" Romeo questioned.
"Not yet," Jeremiah informed him. "You can question them after they are transferred."
Romeo nodded.
When Jeremiah noted that no one had any more questions to ask, he moved on.
"The second attack was here," Jeremiah said, pointing at an area Helena knew was furthest from Blackmoon’s territory.
"They banked on the fact that security would be tighter closer to Blackmoon," Helena gasped. "Was anyone hurt?"
"No," Jeremiah said with a relieved expression. "We knew there was a chance they would target that area."
"How many and were they rogues again?" It was Romeo’s turn to ask.
"This was a bigger group, and they were all wolves that belonged to a pack," Jeremiah sighed. "There were thirty in this attack, and twenty-six of the attacking wolves were killed."
Helena gasped.
Twenty-six wolves was not a small number. Many smaller packs had no more than fifty members.
"And on our side?" Helena asked as she held Romeo’s hand tighter.
"No deaths, but we have around ten warriors badly injured," Jeremiah informed them.
Helena nodded, relieved that no one had died from their packs.
"I brought the survivors with me," Jeremiah announced. "I asked your Gammas to place them in your prison."
"Thank you," Romeo mumbled. "We should go and interrogate them. We need to know why they are attacking. They almost killed—"
Romeo stopped midsentence before turning to face Helena.
He placed his hand on her cheek and gently caressed it.
"I won’t ever let them hurt you," he swore.
"I can protect myself, Romeo," Helena sighed.
"Still," he told her.
"You have a more pressing matter at hand," Raul told Romeo. "The former Red River Pack members need to swear to you."
"Can’t that wait?" Romeo questioned his father.
Raul frowned and shook his head.
"Unfortunately not," he told his son. "Take Helena with you, you’ll need her there."
