Is It Wrong To Love My StepBrother Alpha Mate? -
Chapter 129
Chapter 129: Chapter 129
"Are you sure she’s here?" Romeo asked as he looked up at the unsuspecting residential building. The whole street was quiet, with only a few people having passed by them since they arrived over thirty minutes ago.
He was quite impressed with the speed at which Victor’s men found this place. They’d initially identified several buildings in the city that seemed like a likely place to keep Helena, and managed to narrow it to this one.
"We can’t mess this up," Romeo whispered. "We probably have just one chance. If they hear of this raid, they might kill her."
"We’re sure, and they won’t," Victor shrugged. "Last I checked, Alphonse was madly in love with your mate."
Romeo let out a low growl, to which Victor responded with the clicking of his tongue while he shook his head.
"You might not like that fact, but based on what I suspect, that’s exactly what’s keeping Helena alive," Victor pointed out.
As much as the fact annoyed Romeo, it was true. Alphonse’s attraction to Helena was what also made him sloppy.
"Wanna hear something interesting about this building?" Victor asked.
Romeo raised an eyebrow, he was torn between worry and annoyance.
"All the residents of that building are suspected to be former members of one pack," Victor told Romeo. "I think this one will be quite familiar to you, it’s the Dark Ridge Pack."
Romeo’s gaze snapped so quickly to Victor that the latter had to take a step back, worried that Romeo would attack.
"The building was owned by the former Dark Ridge Alpha’s sister, whose mate was a member of one of the Sunfire Packs," Victor continued to explain. "After the Dark Ridge Pack Alpha died, and you saved the abused members, a nephew took residence."
"Alphonse," Romeo growled.
"His aunt left the property to him, and he filled the apartments with his father’s most loyal, those who turned down your offer to join Blackmoon," Victor told Romeo.
"How do you know this?" Romeo asked as he watched the building. He could see the shadows of kids and a few others who might be innocent.
"We keep track of those who enter our walls who carry ranked heritage," Victor said with a shrug. "Unfortunately, Alphonse isn’t his real name. He took a cousin’s and managed to find sanctuary here."
Romeo took a deep breath and closed his eyes.
"What’s his real name?" he asked Victor.
"Markan Darkridge," Victor said.
Romeo didn’t know the name of the Alpha Heir when he killed the sitting Alpha of the Dark Ridge pack, but the name sounded familiar.
"I didn’t even know him back then, I’m not even sure if he was there when I challenged his father," Romeo confessed.
"He probably was and he probably thought you were going to kill him next," Victor said with a shrug.
Romeo nodded.
He knew what it looked like when he had to take the Alpha’s life. He hated it, and he had thought back to that day so many times.
"Alphas," a woman Romeo recognized to be Victor’s Gamma said as she approached. "We’ve cleared the vicinity."
"Can you do me a favor, Clarise?" Romeo asked the woman.
"What is it, Alpha?" she asked Romeo as she gave him a confused look.
Romeo liked how the people of Sunfire City didn’t automatically agree to do whatever he wanted, they thought about it first before agreeing. Although so far they’d all given in to his requests.
"There are children in the building, there are also probably innocent mates there as well," Romeo explained. "I don’t want those who are innocent caught in the crossfire. Can we screen them first and protect them?"
Clarise and Victor looked at each other and shared a knowing smile.
"We guessed that you’d ask for that," Victor explained to Romeo. "They’ll be kept safe and given new homes in the city."
"Thank you," Romeo said as they made their way to the door where they’d planned to make their entrance.
Victor turned to his men and sent out what Romeo assumed to be a message through their mind link.
Unlike other packs, Victor and the other Sunfire Alphas were able to speak to those packs within the Sunfire City alliance.
’Ready?’ Romeo asked his wolf, and Victor’s men got into position.
’Ready,’ Ryder answered as the door was forced open and the warriors rushed in.
To everyone’s surprise, there was no one waiting at the door, but as they moved deeper into the building, they were met with some resistance.
They’d found four wolves guarding an unassuming door, one that Romeo guessed led down to the basement where they suspected Helena was being kept.
With the four wolves busy, Romeo and Victor led the group through the door and down the basement.
It was here that they met more wolves, and to Romeo’s surprise, a few witches.
"Go," Victor hissed as he pointed toward the only hallway. "Go get Helena, we’ll deal with this bunch."
Romeo gave Victor a nod as he led another group of warriors away from the fighting and toward the hall.
They ran as fast as they could, and that’s when Romeo saw her.
He spotted Helena down the hall, taking on three wolves at a time. It was clear they were told not to hurt her as they tried their best to render her unconscious.
"Take them!" Romeo shouted.
The warriors with him quickly reacted to his order, while Helena’s attention was drawn to him.
One of the wolves took advantage of the fact that she was distracted, stabbing what looked like a syringe into her neck.
"No!" Romeo shouted as he ran faster than even the warriors he’d originally sent.
"Ugh, that’s annoying," Helena groaned as she pulled the syringe out and stabbed it into her attacker.
The wolf fell to the ground, crying out in pain.
"Helena," Romeo said as he cupped her face in his hands. He looked at her, checking her for injuries, and was relieved to find that she wasn’t seriously hurt in any way.
"I’m fine," Helena said as she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him with a ferocity that caught Romeo off guard.
"I’m safe, I’m well," Helena swore as soon as she pulled away.
"We should get you home, to safety," Romeo told Helena as he tugged her towards the direction of the exit.
To his surprise, Helena pulled him back and shook her head.
"I have to tell you something," Helena said as she looked up at Romeo. "We can’t go home yet, we have to go to my place here, Rome, I didn’t tell you but when I left Blackmoon I was pregnant and—"
Romeo kissed her, cutting her off midsentence.
"I love you, you crazy strong woman," Romeo said as he kissed her again. "I’ve been to your place here in Sunfire and I’ve met Ronan."
"You have?" Helena asked, stunned by Romeo’s revelation.
"He is the most precious thing in the world, but right now I need to make sure his mama gets back to him," Romeo told her.
"We can’t, not yet," Helena said as she looked back at the hall that split into two more hallways. "I want him dead."
"Alphonse?" Romeo asked her.
Helena nodded.
"His dad was the Alpha of Dark Ridge," she told him.
"I know, Alphonse isn’t his real name," Romeo told her.
"He was using me to get to you at first, and now there are witches involved, and I don’t know how. I need to talk to Grandpa," Helena told Romeo.
"Let’s deal with Alphonse, then we can go to Ronan, and you’re Grandpa," Romeo promised her as he looked down the empty hall. "Any chance you’d know which way?"
"The one on the right," Helena said.
Romeo gave the warriors a nod, and they took the lead.
Without letting go of Helena’s hand, they followed, keeping their ears open and staying alert in case Alphonse’s men tried anything.
At the end of the hall, there was a room where ten warriors stood guard.
The warriors of Sunfire City struck quickly while Romeo, Helena, and a few others entered the room.
"Helena, how’d you get out?" Alphonse asked as he stood at the other end of the room.
He wasn’t alone. There were three other wolves with him, all poised to attack.
"You fucking ass!" Helena growled as she launched herself at Alphonse.
Romeo was with her, protecting her as the three others reacted. The Sunfire warriors were also quick to react, taking two down while Romeo dealt with the other.
As soon as Romeo took down the one that was about to harm Helena he turned to find Helena’s hand gripping Alphonse’s head as she tore it off, growling in anger.
"You will not threaten my mate or my son again, you pathetic excuse for an Alpha," she said, and just like that, Alphonse, who’d caused them so much pain, was dead.
Romeo wrapped his arms around Helena as he let her cry.
He knew that at one point she’d considered the young man her friend, and he’d betrayed her.
"I trusted wrong," Helena cried. "I risked you and our pack."
"We all make mistakes," Romeo said as he kissed the top of her head. "What’s important is that you and Ronan are safe now, our family is safe and we can all finally go home."
