Chapter 126: 126

When the dust finally settled around them, Helena found herself in Romeo’s arms as he carried her out of the building turned battlefield.

She’d been holding on to him so tightly that she didn’t get to see the carnage that they left in their wake.

Helena could hear the paramedics in the background asking Romeo to put her down so that they could check on her. She also heard his refusal to put his mate down.

Looking up at Romeo, she cupped his cheek, drawing Romeo’s attention.

"Rome, they need to check on me," Helena told him in a weak voice. It was only now that she was feeling the effects of the past day.

"Helena," Romeo managed to say as he buried his head in her neck.

"Can he stay with me?" Helena asked the medic.

She knew that Romeo was already holding himself back. He’d probably heard and felt her sudden exhaustion and was just worried about her.

"Of course, Luna," the medic quickly replied.

Helena looked Romeo in the eyes and gave him a nod.

"You’ll be by my side the entire time, then after they’ve checked me and cleared me, we can go see our son," Helena promised Romeo as she tried to calm the raging wolf that threatened to break free.

Romeo loosened his grip on Helena, making her smile.

"Let’s get you checked out so we can go home," Romeo said with a nod as he placed her down gently on the stretcher.

He didn’t let go of her hand, and medics made no such move to anger the already agitated Alpha.

They drew some blood and checked Helena’s vitals. It was then that she started to feel a little lightheaded.

"Lie down please, Luna," the medic said, gesturing toward the pillow they’d placed on the stretcher. "You seem a bit pale."

Helena nodded, doing as the medic suggested while Romeo assisted her.

"Romeo, Helena, are you here?" Victor’s familiar voice came echoing across the street.

"Right here," Helena heard Romeo say through gritted teeth.

"He’s just worried," Helena said as she gave Romeo’s hand a squeeze. "He’s family."

"He wasn’t till a few weeks ago," Romeo grumbled as Victor appeared by Romeo’s side.

"Hi, cousin!" Victor said with a wink.

He then turned his attention to the medic and gave him a more serious look.

"How is she?" he asked.

"Her vitals are stable, Alphas, as far as we can tell she just needs to hydrate and rest—"

"Doc, doc!" someone called out as a path cleared toward Helena.

"What’s going on?" the medic asked as the man approached.

He panted as he handed her a piece of paper while taking tentative glances at Helena.

Romeo growled, making the man flinch.

Helena quickly reached up to hold Romeo down and to keep him calm. Whatever was happening sent the man into a panic, and based on the doctor’s expression, Helena could already tell that something was wrong.

"What is it, doc?" Helena asked in a weak voice.

"I don’t know how to say this, Luna, but you should be dead," the doctor’s proclamation sent Romeo off the handle as Victor tried to hold him down.

He tried to reach for the doctor, but luckily, the doctor managed to back away quickly enough.

"I’m sorry, he’s been through a lot today, and he’s only trying to protect me," Helena told the doctor before turning her attention back to her mate.

She placed her hand on his chest and let out a breath.

"Rome, please," Helena pleaded. "I’m fine, I’m alive. You need to calm down."

Helena watched as Romeo closed his eyes and visibly relaxed to the point that Victor didn’t have to hold the other Alpha back.

When Romeo opened his eyes again, it was clearer, and it was evident that his anger had faded.

"I’m sorry about that doc," Romeo said as he held Helena’s hand.

To their surprise, the doctor laughed and shook his head.

"My brother is an Alpha, so I’m quite used to their possessive streak," the doctor explained. "I’m Tom Firefang, my brother is one of the Sunfire Alphas."

"He’s also the best doctor we’ve got," Victor chuckled. "So I’d appreciate it if you didn’t kill him, Romeo."

With all the heaviness aside, Helena remembered the doctor’s comments.

"What did you mean that I should be dead?" Helena asked, making Romeo growl, but it was cut short as Victor elbowed him.

"Sorry, I just reacted," Romeo said as he squeezed Helena’s hand.

Tom gave Romeo an understanding nod as he handed Helena the piece of paper he’d been given.

"With the amount of wolfsbane running in your system, you should be dead," Tom said.

"Goddess," Victor gasped as he took the document from Helena’s hands.

"So you’re telling me I could have just used my blood to poison everyone?" Helena asked, tilting her head to the side.

"Helena, love, out of all the things the doctor told you, that’s what you pick up?" Romeo asked. He looked unsure if he should be worried or amused, instead he had the same expression as a child that needed to take a shit.

"I mean, I knew how much Wolfsbane they were injecting me with," Helena shrugged. "I’m immune, or at least I built an immunity to it while I was captured."

"I’m gonna kill those bastards," Romeo growled.

"Too late, Rome, Helena already killed Markan," Victor said.

"Markan?" Helena asked.

"Alphonse, Markan, that’s his real name, Markan Darkridge," Romeo explained to her. "He managed to escape and used you to get to me."

"Romeo, he wasn’t alone," Helena said. "It wasn’t all wolves that were behind this."

"What do you mean?" Romeo asked Helena.

"There are witches and warlocks involved, people who hate the fact that I’m my grandfather’s heir and I’m a hybrid," Helena explained. "There was a witch, her name was Falon, she wanted to kill me, but Alph— Markan stopped her."

Romeo nodded as he pressed a kiss to the top of Helena’s head.

"He will never hurt you again," Romeo swore. "You dealt with him, Helena. Like you’ve slayed every deamon you’ve had to face."

Helena nodded.

"And the wolfsbane poisoning?" Victor asked, pointing at the document in his hand. "I’ve never seen these levels in anyone, dead or alive. How much were they pumping into you cuz?"

Helena rolled her eyes.

Ever since learning that they were step-cousins in a long confusing way, Victor had made it a point to tell everyone they were related.

According to him, it made the Sunstrike Alphas part of the most powerful dynasty of Alphas ever to exist.

"I think being a hybrid made me immune," Helena told them. "At first, I really felt the effects, the first dose knocked me out, I’m not sure for how long, but it was long enough for them to get me to the building."

"How many times did they inject you with Wolfsbane?" Tom asked Helena.

"Based on my count," Helena hummed as she thought back to the time’s she felt that she was being injected. "Five, six times?"

"Damn," Tom hissed.

"Did we get everyone?" Romeo asked Victor, who responded with a frown.

"How many?" Romeo demanded.

Victor didn’t answer.

Romeo slammed his fists on the stretcher, making everyone jump.

"How many did we miss, Victor?" Romeo asked again. "Every single one of those that escaped is a threat to my family."

"I’m not sure," Victor eventually managed to answer. "We got everyone that was registered as a resident of this building and some from the surrounding areas, but Helena is saying there were witches involved, Romeo. I don’t keep track of witches, as a matter of fact, most of them just arrived today."

"Romeo, it’s not Victor’s fault," Helena reminded her mate. "You didn’t know what you were going up against, and the best thing we can do is to regroup and maybe speak to grandpa. He should be able to help."

Helena waited for Romeo to react or at least to demand an immediate search for those who had escaped, but to her surprise, Romeo nodded, agreeing with her proposal.

"It’s been a long day," Romeo admitted. "We need our rest, but at the same time, you need to make sure that everyone who comes and goes should be tracked and recorded."

"You won’t ask for a hunt now?" Victor asked as he gave Romeo a confused look.

To everyone’s surprise, Romeo shook his head.

"We’re dealing with witches and possibly warlocks too this time, we don’t know much about them," Romeo said. "We need to gather what intel we can which means speaking to Theodore and Theodora."

Romeo then looked at Helena and kissed the top of her head.

"My people and yours have been through a lot tonight," Romeo told Victor. "Some who’d just found their mates lost them on the same night. Also, my Mate and I have just been reunited, I’ve also just learned that I’m a dad. We can rest for a night."

"And tomorrow, we’ll come for them," Helena said, looking back into Romeo’s eyes knowing she’d never leave him again.
