Chapter 50: Lailla Grien
Chapter 50: Lailla Grien
"Who’re you—" Zelr demanded to know, turning his blade to face his opponent, the girl laughed, clearly not seeing him as a threat.
"Lailla Grien, warrior of the kingdom of science," she took a soft bow, laughter laced within her words, like a little girl who can’t keep themselves still.
"Kingdom of science..." Astra muttered, the name catching her attention, gaze narrowing at their adversary as she took a step back.
’It’s them...’ She thought, her eyes flicking to Zelr who continued to keep his eyes on her, not moving for a moment.
The hunter’s shoulders stiffened, his grip on his blade enough to make a grown man flinch.
"I’ll leave this to you-" Astra announced, grabbing her bag and running ahead, Zelr giving her a soft nod, acknowledging her words.
"Where’re you off to~!" Lailla laughed, her heel coiling back to a monstrous degree only left on the ball of her feet before springing forward, the sheer force leaving a small crater in the earth. In an instant she reached in the way of the scientist, her arms coiled back with a grin of pure joy. "I thought we were about to have fun!"
Before Astra could react she shot her arm, the force whistling like a slingshot. Astra closed her eyes, feeling gusts upon gusts of force blowing past her. Only to open them to see Zelr in the way, taking the full force.
"Go—" He muttered, not even bothering to look back. Astra nodded and continued down the path, leaving the two titans to their fight.
"You’re such a bore, you know that?" Lailla taunted, cracking her cybernetic knuckles. Zelr tilted his head to the side, the sound of his cracking neck echoing in his ear like a cracked whip.
"Sorry to disappoint," He muttered, one leg back to gain better footing, his blade arched across, directly over his face. Showing off the jagged edges and the finely polished granite. "But I’ll be your opponent now..."
"Fine by me!" She grinned, whipping her arms and hands into clenched fists, the gears in the machine beginning to turn. Zelr’s eyes noticed nozzles coming out of the knuckles of the device before she charged once more at him. "I’ll just have to beat you down first!"
Her punches came as fast as the last, the hunter narrowly avoiding the attack as her fist whizzed by his face. He can feel the force behind it, his hair thrashing as it cleaves through the wind around them. Quickly he stepped back, analyzing her from afar.
"Running away? Really? You’re boring me!" She groaned, charging once more.
"Celi how much time’s left!?" Astra demanded, looking down the crater on her knees, she watched as the jagged ends led to the pit filled with sulfuric acid below, the waters littered with the deadly liquid.
[Estimated time: 10 minutes!]
"No time to waste then–" she went leg first, her heel digging down to get as much footing as possible, desperate for some semblance of safety, the clock ticking down her neck in a death song as she got closer and closer.
"Not bad!" Lailla complemented Zelr dodging her blows one after another, though he had yet to land one of his own. Her movements were too fast for his focus to waver, even a thought in another fiber of his being and he’s finished, blindsided by her flurry of attacks. "Let’s see how you handle this then~"
Gushes of wind started to blow from the nozzles, blasting her punches forward with even more intensity, landing a firm strike on his jaw. Her metallic knuckles dug into the hunter’s face, his eyes crossed as he felt the immense pain, a consequence to the force that would send him tumbling onto his back.
He hissed through the pain, feeling the stinging burn on his cheek, his breathing hastened as the adrenaline soon set into his being.
"Done already?" she asked, her voice more disappointed than it should be, she craned her neck behind her, hearing the soft thuds of Astra’s futile climb down. "Maybe i should go play with her instea—"
The sound of a grunt and rustling grass interrupted her thought, her eyes landing right back on Zelr who was at his knees, ready to go once more.
"I’m not...done yet!" He growled, his grip tightening on his blade, Laillah’s eyes widened caught off guard by the warrior’s sudden conviction,
"Interesting...looks like you might be some fun afterall—" she mused, crossing her arms as she watched him get up, panting like a dog. His left eye is narrower than his right, adjusting to the pain on his face.
He charges in, taking a swipe at her with his blade, she pivots, moving out of the way as soon as she could. Her eyes snapping to his arm, his muscles and veins defined as he pulled back as soon as possible, catching the razored edges of his blade on her skin, tearing at her arm.
"Tch–" she hissed, swiftly retaliating with an uppercut to the jaw. The blow shocked him to his core, clashing his teeth together in a devastating disorienting blow. His hands tightened on his blade, even as he staggered backwards, being met with a flurry of steam driven blows without pause.
She continued, not giving him a chance to catch his breath.
’I feel hot...’ He thought, his eyes half lidded as the feeling began to spread and his heart began to beat faster. ’My body’s burning up...’
She landed a final spine wracking punch to his gut, Zelr’s body filled with bruises.
’Why am I even fighting, for her of all people—’ He thought, crimson trickling from his lips as he tried to regain his composure. ’Someone who took something from me, the enemy, someone who i loath—’
’If only I had my other hand—’ He paused, his mind remembering something that had long passed. ’No...that’s just an excuse.’
the man raised, standing up straighter than he had before, though his body still oozed with fatigue.
"You don’t have to play the hero you know..." Lailla groaned, rolling her shoulders. "This is starting to get old—"
"I’m not done fighting yet..." He pants, raising his head to the point he’s almost looking down on her, despite his bloodied and battered state. "The only reason I’m alive– Is because my chief had mercy on me!"
He raised his sword once more, his gaze half lidded in an intense focus even as blood trickled over his eyes.
"And I’d be damned if I disappoint him now."
