Chapter 23: First Eternal Bond~

Chapter 23 - First Eternal Bond~

"And we need to consider marriage arrangements," Cassandra said, then immediately looked shocked that she'd said it out loud.

Marriage arrangements. Right. Because what I really need right now is to add formal romantic politics to my list of problems.

But as I looked around at my family - all of whom were clearly struggling with the effects of my awakening - I realized that the next seven days were going to be about much more than just preparing for the academy.

They were going to be about figuring out what kind of person I wanted to become with these impossible abilities.

And whether I could do it without losing everyone I cared about to whatever I was becoming.

Though honestly, given how this world works, maybe the solution isn't fighting what I'm becoming. Maybe it's embracing it and making sure everyone enjoys the ride.

Later that evening, after our intense discussion about power scaling and political implications, I decided I desperately needed a bath to process everything that had happened. My awakening, the ultimatum, the realization that I was literally the first person in history to break their classification system - it was a lot to take in.

The bathroom attached to my suite was, like everything else in our estate, absolutely ridiculous in its luxury. The bathtub was more like a small pool, carved from what appeared to be a single piece of black marble and equipped with magical heating and purification systems that kept the water at perfect temperature.

At least if I'm going to have an existential crisis about my supernatural abilities, I can do it in style.

I'd just settled into the perfectly heated water when I heard the door open behind me.

"Marcus?" Cassandra's voice called out, though it sounded strangely distant. "I brought an enhancement charm for your bath water. Mother thought it would help with... recovery from your awakening."

I turned around to see my sister standing in the doorway, holding what looked like a crystalline charm that pulsed with soft golden light. But something was wrong with her expression. Her emerald eyes were wide and unfocused, like she was seeing something that shouldn't be there.

She's in some kind of trance. And given what my life magic has been doing to women lately, I bet I know what caused it.

Through my enhanced sight, I could see her magical aura flickering wildly - the usual red-orange fire magic completely overwhelmed by waves of pink and purple desire energy. Her breathing was shallow, and she seemed frozen in place, staring at my naked form in the bath.

Well, this is certainly a development. My beautiful sister, who's been fighting the effects of my awakening all day, just walked in on me naked and seems to have lost the ability to think clearly.

"Cassandra?" I said softly, testing her response. "Are you alright?"

She blinked slowly, but didn't move from the doorway. The charm in her hand was forgotten as her gaze traveled over my body with an intensity that made something primal stir in my chest.

She's completely entranced. My life magic must be hitting her harder when she's seeing me like this. And the way she's looking at me...

I could see the exact moment her rational mind tried to reassert itself. Her hands moved slightly, as if to cover her eyes or retreat, but then froze mid-motion. A small whimper escaped her lips.

"I... I should go," she whispered, but her feet remained planted firmly in place. "This isn't... I shouldn't be..."

She wants to leave but can't make herself move. Her body is overruling her mind. And honestly? Looking at her standing there in that emerald gown, her full curves outlined by the magical lighting, her breath coming in short gasps...

I made a decision that was probably going to change everything between us.

Slowly, deliberately, I stood up in the bath. Water cascaded down my enhanced physique as I stepped out, not bothering to reach for a towel. Cassandra's breath hitched audibly as her gaze tracked every movement.

Her pupils are completely dilated. She's fighting it, but losing badly.

"Marcus," she breathed, her voice carrying a note of desperate warning. "You need to... we can't... this is wrong..."

But even as she spoke, I could see her resolve cracking. Her magical defenses, formidable enough to make her one of the most powerful women in the empire, were completely useless against whatever I was unconsciously doing to her.

I walked toward her slowly, each step deliberate. She pressed herself back against the doorframe, but made no real attempt to flee.

"Is it wrong?" I asked quietly, reaching past her to close the bathroom door with a soft click. The sound seemed to echo in the sudden silence. "Or is it just something you've been told is wrong?"

"Marcus, please," she whispered, but her protest lacked any real conviction. Her hands came up as if to push me away, but stopped just short of touching my chest. "I'm your sister. We can't... I can't..."

She's trying so hard to fight this. But I can see through my enhanced sight that her body wants this more than anything she's ever wanted in her life. The conflict between her rational mind and her desires is tearing her apart.

Her body wanted me close than her mind and rational mind feared to admit.

I stepped closer, close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from my skin. Her breathing became even more ragged.

"What do you want, Cassandra?" I asked, my voice low and steady. "Not what you think you should want. Not what society expects. What do YOU want?"

Her emerald eyes met mine, and I saw the exact moment her resistance finally crumbled completely. The analytical, controlled part of her mind that had been fighting this all day simply... stopped.

"You," she whispered, so quietly I almost didn't hear it. "I want you. I've wanted you since you awakened, and I can't... I can't think about anything else when you're this close... when i see you and you're so hot that i have this urge to devour you the way my flames devour my enemies but, in your case..."

There it is. Complete honesty. And honestly? Looking at her like this, vulnerable and desperate and more beautiful than anything I've ever seen...

I leaned in closer, backing her against the wall. Her hands, which had been frozen in protest, slowly moved to rest against my chest. Not pushing away anymore, just... touching.

"Then stop fighting it," I murmured against her ear. "Stop trying to be what everyone expects you to be. Just be what you want to be."

Her response was a shuddering gasp that sent heat straight through my core.

This is it. This is where everything changes. Where I stop pretending to be the innocent little brother and start being exactly what I'm meant to be in this world.

And from the way she's looking at me, I don't think she's going to object.
