Chapter 222: My Little Son-In-Law,” Elowen Said Gently, “Do You Need Someone To Rub Your Back?

The living room lights were already dimmed by the time they left the dining hall. No one had said much after Ethan agreed to stay, but no one needed to. The mood had already shifted.

Soft cushions, warm throw blankets, and a faint trace of citrus-scented oil still lingered in the air, leftover from the house staff’s daily cleaning.

The room felt lived-in, yet cozy, as if it belonged to a family that didn’t mind staying in.

Ethan dropped onto the central couch, letting his body sink into the cushions. Everly flopped down right next to him, her head leaning against his shoulder without a word.

Evelyn took the spot on his other side, quiet but close, her fingers resting lightly on the curve of his forearm.

Across the room, Elowen moved toward the side cabinet. She didn’t speak, didn’t ask for input.

She just opened a drawer and pulled out a small black case. When she turned, the twins both smiled.

"Cards?" Everly asked.

Elowen nodded. "Or dice. Your choice."

Ethan raised an eyebrow. "Do I get a say?"

"No," all three women answered at once.

He chuckled and leaned back. "Figures."

They ended up with a card game—something simple, fast-paced, and easy to laugh over.

The kind of game that lets people nudge one another, steal turns, and accuse each other of cheating with a smile.

At first, Ethan thought they were playing normally. However, after the second round, he began to notice things.

Everly’s hand always hovered near his whenever she placed her card. Her fingers brushed his wrist more than once.

Evelyn, quiet as ever, tilted her head when she looked at her cards, letting her hair fall across his shoulder in soft waves.

And Elowen?

She didn’t sit next to him.

She sat opposite, legs crossed, one hand resting lightly on the table.

But every now and then, her foot tapped the floor once. Just a soft click. Almost like a signal. And the twins would lean in closer, almost in sync.

Ethan didn’t say anything. But he started playing worse.

"Three in a row," Everly said after winning another round. "You okay?"

"I’m fine," he said.

"You sure?" Evelyn asked, her voice calm, but her eyes knowing. "You’re not distracted or anything?"

"I said I’m fine."

"Then try not to lose," Everly grinned.

The fourth round went even worse. He was halfway through when he felt something press against the side of his knee.

He glanced down.

Nothing obvious.

But when he looked up again, Elowen’s gaze was still calm. Still quiet.

Still there.

She didn’t smile.

But her eyes held something that almost felt like a dare.

He didn’t respond. Not openly.

But when Everly won again and cheered, leaning against him, Ethan let his hand rest lightly on her thigh for a second longer than usual.

Her reaction was subtle.

But she didn’t pull away.

And neither did Evelyn when his fingers grazed her knee during the next round.

Eventually, the cards lost their appeal.

They switched to watching an old film—one of the classic superpower dramas that had aired before any of them were born. The kind that relied more on tension than effects.

The couch grew warmer.

Closer.

Elowen moved from her chair and took the open seat near the end of the couch. Not close enough to be touching anyone. But close enough to change the balance of the room.

The twins started leaning more into Ethan as the movie played. They didn’t talk. They just shifted slowly, letting themselves sink into the soft cushions beside him.

Their legs brushed against his. Their shoulders pressed into his arms.

And in the soft light of the screen, Elowen watched it all.

She didn’t look away.

Not once.

Eventually, the movie ended. The credits rolled over a soft piano outro. No one reached for the remote.

Everly yawned first. Then stretched, arms above her head, before letting them fall across Ethan’s lap.

"I’m done," she mumbled.

Evelyn was calmer. She stood quietly and smoothed her dress. "We should sleep."

"Agreed," Elowen said, her voice soft but final.

Ethan stood with them. The quiet was back, but it wasn’t awkward.

Just natural.

They didn’t say goodnight.

They didn’t have to.

Each of them slipped off to their rooms, the hall light guiding their steps.

Ethan made his way down the familiar corridor toward the guest wing. Only, it wasn’t really a guest wing for him. Not anymore.

He’d stayed here so often over the past few years—sometimes alone, sometimes with Lilith or his sisters when they visited—that a room had been set aside just for him.

The door creaked softly as he pushed it open.

Same simple layout. The same clean bed, with dark sheets tucked in neatly—a side table with a ceramic lamp. A half-open sliding door led to the bathroom.

Then he went inside and started removing his clothes.

Took his time.

His shirt came off first.

He took a second to breathe, his chest rising and falling.

Then he undid his pants.

Slowly.

Careful.

He set his clothes aside, folding them roughly and dropping them onto the padded bench near the wall.

The bathroom was still warm from the earlier shower someone must’ve taken. Steam lingered faintly on the mirror. The overhead light hummed softly, casting pale shadows across the tiled floor.

Ethan reached for a towel and walked to the shower, letting the water run first.

Steam filled the room again.

He stepped in, letting the water run over his head, his shoulders, his back.

No thoughts.

Just heat and breath.

A few minutes passed.

That’s when the knock came.

Just one tap.

Quiet. Almost too soft to notice.

It could have been an accident, like it was.

Maybe the wood had shifted. Maybe a draft nudged something nearby. Maybe it was nothing at all.

But Ethan knew better.

He knew who it was.

And he knew not to ignore it.

He wrapped the towel around his waist, dried his hair quickly, and stepped toward the door.

Another soft knock followed—this time clearer. Not rushed. Not hesitant.

He paused.

Then her voice came through.

"My little son-in-law," Elowen said gently, "do you need someone to rub your back?"
