Chapter 221: You Will Stay The Night, Right?

The dining hall had quieted, but not in the way that came with silence.

It was the quiet that followed an unspoken shift. A shared glance. A moment everyone felt but no one named.

Elowen walked back toward the kitchen without a word, the faint swish of her cheongsam brushing against her thighs.

The soft click of her bare feet against the floor barely registered, but Ethan felt it anyway. The air in the room felt warmer again as she passed behind him.

He didn’t turn.

He just listened.

The soft sound of a cabinet opening. Porcelain set onto a tray. The brief clink of a spoon touching a glass. The gentle pour of liquid was steady and practiced.

Even that had rhythm.

Then her steps returned, slower this time, more measured.

She came back with a tray holding a white ceramic teapot and a small stack of delicate plates, each one topped with a neat triangle of chestnut cake and a cluster of golden, honeyed berries.

There was no dramatic presentation, no words.

Just quiet confidence.

She set the tray down with a smooth motion, then poured the tea, her sleeves brushing the edge of the table as she leaned in slightly. The scent of jasmine rose with the steam.

It lingered—light, floral, clean. Ethan breathed it in without realizing.

Elowen didn’t sit back down at once.

Instead, she walked behind Ethan’s chair.

He didn’t flinch.

Didn’t shift.

She paused just long enough to reach between the twins and gently place a plate before him. Her fingers brushed the side of his hand as she set it down.

He didn’t pull away. Instead, he leaned back slightly, aware of her presence behind him.

And as she withdrew her hand, her fingers brushed lightly against his cheek, as if it happened by accident. But the touch lingered just long enough to suggest it wasn’t.

She didn’t pause. Didn’t explain. Just kept moving—slow, deliberate, like a tigress circling, studying her prey.

Then, without a word, she continued around and placed the others. One for Evelyn. One for Everly. One for herself last.

And then she sat again.

Opposite him.

Only now, the table felt smaller.

More intimate.

Everly took a small forkful of the dessert and held it toward Ethan with a slight tilt of her head.

"Try it. It’s good."

He leaned forward and let her feed him, chewing slowly. The cake was soft, just sweet enough to linger without clinging to the tongue.

"Not bad," he said.

Evelyn followed. "Tea will help," she said, already pouring into his cup.

Elowen watched the whole exchange in silence, but her eyes weren’t cold, just quiet and still as if studying and measuring something that no one else could see.

Ethan met her gaze for just a second.

That second stretched a little too long.

Then she lifted her own cup and took a slow sip.

"You didn’t say much earlier," Elowen said gently. "About the offers."

"From the other universities?" Ethan asked.

She nodded once. "Yes."

"They were good too. But still a little behind compared to what Astralis offered," Ethan replied.

"Even if some had better perks, I don’t think I would’ve chosen them. I was already prepared to go with Astralis from the start."

"I see," Elowen said with a soft smile, her gaze lingering on him with a quiet, doting warmth.

Her voice was calm. But the weight behind it felt like she was asking something else entirely.

The warmth of the tea helped steady him, but it didn’t clear the tension.

He could feel both twins pressing slightly closer on either side—not enough to crowd him, just enough to remind him they were still there.

Their presence grounded him. But it didn’t distract him.

Not from her.

Elowen leaned back a little. The slit in her cheongsam shifted again as she crossed one leg over the other, slow and fluid.

Her posture never broke, never exaggerated itself. But that movement was deliberate.

And Ethan noticed.

So did the twins.

Everly sat up a little straighter. "You know, I’ve never seen Mom wear something like this."

Evelyn’s voice was quieter. "Even if the clan elders demanded it, she wouldn’t."

Their words didn’t carry judgment. Just a quiet surprise. Like they both knew something had shifted, but didn’t know what it meant yet.

Evelyn added softly, "And she’s never served dessert like this either. Usually, the staff handles everything."

Elowen didn’t answer.

But her eyes didn’t waver.

She just reached forward and picked up her own fork.

The bite she took was small. Measured. Her lips closed around it with perfect control, and she chewed without a single shift in expression.

But her eyes were still locked on Ethan’s.

He didn’t blink.

Not once.

The next ten minutes passed in a slow, quiet rhythm. Bites of dessert. Sips of tea. A few soft comments between the twins, but not much else. The room was too still. Too aware.

Even the air carried something weighty now.

And Ethan couldn’t pretend he didn’t feel it.

He sat with his back relaxed, but not slouched. His hands didn’t fidget. His legs didn’t shift under the table.

But his focus kept drifting.

The way Elowen’s lashes lowered slightly when she took a drink. The way her fingers curled around her cup with unconscious grace.

The way she didn’t have to say anything to control the tempo of the room.

The meal ended slowly.

No sudden movements. No forced closings.

Just time passing. A little too deliberately.

Elowen finally set her cup down and stood, adjusting the apron slightly as she rose.

"I’ll clean up later," she said. "You should rest."

Ethan didn’t move.

Not right away.

Everly tilted her head toward him. "You will stay the night, right?"

He looked between them. Then across the table.

Elowen was already walking toward the hall again, her back to them now. Her steps were unhurried. But she didn’t look back.

She didn’t need to.

The soft brush of fabric was the only sound she left behind.

Ethan let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding.

"I’ll stay."

Hearing this, the twins both smiled.
