Chapter 839: Chapter 818: Seeing Another Little Woman Through Her
Little Yan Yan sweetly smiled, her pair of expressive eyes like two crescent moons, bright and clear.
Seeing this, Jun Ruochen’s gaze, filled with understanding, hardly dared to blink.
Through that face, which resembled that of the little girl’s as if they were cast from the same mold, big and small, he seemed to see once again the lively eyes of that mischievous little woman.
A dull knife seemed to carve incessantly at his heart, a pain so deep it cleaved through to his core, making him wish for death, subconsciously clenching his fists, unable to regain his senses from her face for a long time.
Suddenly, a small face appeared enlarged before him, as Little Yan Yan leaned close to Jun Ruochen, waving her little hand with a curious look at him.
"Uncle Jun, what’s wrong with you?"
Jun Ruochen’s wandering thoughts finally returned, and he personally picked up the teapot in front of him, refilling Little Yan Yan’s cup.
"You’re still young, so it’s better not to drink too much tea. Later I’ll have someone bring up some Rock Sugar White Fungus Soup, it can also moisten your throat."
"Okay!"
Little Yan Yan sweetly laughed, nodding earnestly, "No wonder my mother always says that Uncle Jun is the kindest person!"
This statement immediately captured all of Jun Ruochen’s attention, and his heart stirred on the spot.
"Oh? Your mother has mentioned me to you?"
Little Yan Yan nodded seriously and sincerely.
"Of course! My mother said that she and you are cousins, and she also said that you used to take care of her a lot, always protecting her!"
"Is that so!"
Jun Ruochen suddenly laughed, his smile softening, as he couldn’t help but reach out to ruffle her hair, sighing deeply.
"Then hasn’t your mother told you that as we are cousins, by rights, you should call me ’Cousin Uncle’ instead?"
But the little girl called him Uncle Jun. How could this be seen as treating him like a cousin uncle?
Perhaps she hadn’t told her daughter anything about him at all!
For a moment, the touch of affection that had just arisen in his heart was completely extinguished!
"That’s not it, humph!"
Little Yan Yan suddenly frowned, pouting: "My mother said that you are my cousin uncle! But my milkmaid said that you are very bad, and she even said that you want to kill my father, telling me not to acknowledge you!"
Milkmaid?
She must be one of the servants who knew about what happened back then.
Jun Ruochen’s mouth twitched slightly, but he didn’t say more about the matter. Instead, he turned to order the servants to prepare the meal.
While the servants were busy serving the dishes, Little Yan Yan secretly observed his expression, feeling somewhat anxious.
No matter how clever she was, she was still too young!
She had indeed heard her parents mention this cousin uncle several times, but it was only ever in a simple explanation, and there was no further information.
However, it was her own idea not to call him cousin uncle and instead call him Uncle Jun.
Although she didn’t understand why Aunt Wu was so determined to send her all the way to him, she surely didn’t harbor any good intentions. Under such circumstances, she certainly didn’t want to call someone who may wish to harm her a cousin uncle—even if she didn’t feel any danger from him!
Even so, she never let her guard down.
When the meal was served, Little Yan Yan noticed that the table was laden with delicious dishes. Su Xian’er had rushed her on the journey in the past few days, and the food on the road could hardly be called delicate.
Now, seeing a table full of dishes, her eyes, like black grapes, filled with laughter, and her joy rapidly spread.
"Come on, eat some good food! Just treat this place like your own home, don’t just stand there."
Jun Ruochen personally served some dishes into her bowl.
"Thank you, Uncle Jun!"
Little Yanyan was indeed hungry, and even though she had some pastries earlier, the sight of a table full of delicious food made her unable to resist picking up her chopsticks.
Still calling him Uncle Jun?
Jun Ruochen couldn’t help but narrow his eyes, and he reached to give her some of the dishes that were further away.
"Would you like to acknowledge me as your cousin then?"
Little Yanyan hesitated and lowered her head, her rice-plucking motion never ceasing as if she was in a difficult struggle with her thoughts for quite some time before looking up at him with a tilted head for a good while.
"But, Yanyan sees that cousin is very nice to Little Yanyan! Not at all like what the milkmaid said. Cousin, would you harm Little Yanyan like the milkmaid said? Would you harm my mother, my father?"
Jun Ruochen’s body tensed slightly, then he countered with a question.
"Do you think your cousin would harm you?"
"Of course not!"
Little Yanyan laughed crisply, her sweetness genuinely endearing.
"Cousin is so nice to Little Yanyan, how could he possibly harm me? You agree, don’t you, cousin?"
"Naturally, I would not."
Jun Ruochen smiled affably and slowly continued eating with her.
Privately, through that small face, he seemed to see another woman, unlike the chirpy, jolly voice of the little girl before him, it was a sweet, unique smile that belonged solely to her.
It wasn’t until he had finished accompanying Little Yanyan through her meal and comforted her, and then arranged for two young maids to look after her food and daily life, that Jun Ruochen finally left the yard.
He couldn’t help but look back. The house was filled with the vibrant sound of the little girl’s voice, and that’s when he walked forward, hands clasped behind his back.
The attendant hurried to catch up alongside him, glanced towards the inside, and said carefully, "My lord, the lady mentioned earlier that she wished to see you. She’s been arranged to meet on the other side now, what do you think..."
Jun Ruochen paused in his step, then nodded his head.
"Let’s go, let’s see!"
Su Xian’er had already become somewhat impatient from the wait!
She paced back and forth in the house, burning with anxiety. She hadn’t even touched the fancy pastries and the like arranged on the table.
Just as she was biting her teeth and planning to storm out due to the lack of any sign, she heard voices from outside.
"Please enter, my lord."
Following the attendant’s words, the tall figure of Jun Ruochen appeared at the door.
Looking down from his elevated stance, Jun Ruochen eyed Su Xian’er twice, walked to the Main Seat, sat down casually, and after surveying her, finally spoke.
His words were teasing, "Long time no see. I wouldn’t have thought the seemingly harmless little white rabbit of the past could have changed so drastically!"
These words made Su Pan’er clench her teeth.
When she had initially decided to send Qin Yanyan over here, her mind was firmly set on ensuring the destruction of Su Pan’er’s family, a total devastation of her life!
She was not living well, and she was determined not to let Su Pan’er have a good life either!
All that Su Pan’er owed her, she vowed to take back on her own!
Her choice of Jun Ruochen was because she had long heard of the old grievances between Qin Yi and him; since he hated not being able to personally annihilate Qin Yi, bringing Qin Yanyan right into his hands should have provoked a certain response from him. Yet he reacted with this attitude.
However, within moments, she regained her composure.
"What, does Lord Jun find this a hot potato, not wanting to deal with it?"
There was a mocking tone in her eyes, "Or is it that Lord Jun, while outwardly serving His Majesty, secretly harbors old affections?"
