In Love With My Fierce Farming Wife! -
Chapter 837 - 816: Escape
Chapter 837: Chapter 816: Escape
Due to the war, strict scrutiny was enforced for anyone entering or leaving this small town; in fact, the town gate was essentially closed to commoners. The only people who galloped in and out on horseback were messengers. The only others were laborers and able-bodied men from nearby, forced to transport food and carry burdens under the watchful eye and leather whip of the soldiers at the gate.
Distant reprimands could already be heard.
Su Xian’er was pondering how to get closer. She had long since learned that the town’s defense was under the responsibility of Jun Ruochen. If she could just hand over the child to him, given the current oppositional stance between the two parties, this damn girl’s departure... it was feared...
"Ow! Aunt Wu, my stomach hurts... I need to go to the latrine. Hurry..."
Just as she was considering how to approach, Little Yanyan next to her suddenly clutched her stomach and cried out in pain.
Su Xian’er immediately frowned, scolding her, even forgetting to disguise her annoyance: "What’s wrong now, why go to the latrine at this time? Hold it in!"
She was just about to succeed; she did not want to have to coax the sassy youngster at this moment.
"I can’t hold it, I can’t! It’s going to come out, I..."
Little Yanyan, holding her stomach, went around in circles. Suddenly, she pushed toys like a small clay monkey into Su Xian’er’s arms: "Aunt Wu, take care of these for me for a moment, I’ll be right back. You must, you really must not lose them! Don’t lose them!"
As she spoke, she burrowed into the grass.
Su Xian’er wanted to follow, but looking at the children’s toys in her hands, she stopped and peered ahead for a moment. Seeing the decorated hat on Little Yanyan’s head peeking out of the grass, she finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"Come back quickly, don’t dawdle!"
She cautioned, anxious.
She then turned to look at the other strongmen.
These men were all thin and sallow, swaying even as they walked, yet they had to push heavy woods, stones, and sand. The soldiers treated them with scorn and disdain, their leather whips cracking in the air. This weighed heavily on her.
War, it always made the commoners suffer. Which of those in power would care about the lives of commoners?
For a time, her mind was awash with thoughts, wandering far away.
Not until a great while did she notice that Qin Yanyan still hadn’t returned. She couldn’t help but call out in a low voice, careful not to attract the attention of the distant soldiers.
"Little Yanyan, Little Yanyan, are you done yet? Hurry up!"
The grass was silent, completely still.
"Yan Yan, Little Yanyan!"
Still no reply.
A shock went through Su Xian’er’s heart, and she quickly headed to where Little Yanyan was supposed to be.
"Yan Yan, what are you doing? Why don’t you answer Aunt Wu, you..."
As she neared and turned a corner, she saw clearly.
At the spot she assumed Little Yanyan was hiding, a clump of lush grass stood, and at the very top of it hung a small, decorated hat, identical to the one Qin Yanyan had worn.
"Damn it! She’s escaped!"
Furious, Su Xian’er grabbed the hat, threw it to the ground, and spitefully kicked it several times before she began to follow the traces to search for her.
If she caught her, she would make her wish she never knew how she died!
Angry, she continued to search around, rummaging through the grass, vowing to find her.
Two steps behind her in the grass, Little Yanyan quietly moved back and hurriedly buried herself even lower.
Having stared at the checkpoint for so long earlier, Su Xian’er’s barely concealed malice in her eyes was not lost on Little Yanyan. Precocious from a young age, how could she not understand that her Aunt Wu was probably about to harm her!
If she didn’t escape now, she feared she might never have another chance!
She pretended to run away, using her hat to distract Su Xian’er while secretly finding a nearby hiding spot to disguise herself.
It wasn’t that she didn’t want to escape, but beyond this patch of grass was an open field. With her small size and short legs, could she really outrun her?
Mother often said, "The most dangerous place can also be the safest," so she hid nearby, betting on her luck!
Under her breath, Su Xian’er cursed as she walked farther away along the wild grass.
Summer grass was full of hornets and snaked.
Her disturbance agitated two nests of wild bees, which buzzed menacingly and swarmed towards her, chasing her until she ran without choosing her path!
As she ran, she coincidentally encountered two snaked, twisting and turning her way, and unexpectedly stumbled right into Little Yanyan’s hiding spot.
Seeing Su Xian’er running towards her, Little Yanyan knew trouble was coming and hurriedly retreated.
"Qin Yanyan!"
At this point, Su Xian’er could no longer bother to keep her voice down, she bellowed in anger!
This startled Little Yanyan, causing her to tremble all over, look back for a moment, and then rush onward.
"Hornets! So many hornets are flying this way, run fast!"
"Don’t run, you can’t run, you can’t run when the hornets come!"
Su Xian’er was furious. She took a few strides forward, grabbed Qin Yanyan, but Little Yanyan took the opportunity to bury herself in Su Xian’er’s arms, curling up into a ball.
"Aunt Wu, I’m scared! I’m so scared, woo woo..."
Qin Yanyan cried out loud!
Su Xian’er wanted to cry even more!
The hornets were extremely agitated by the sight of running people and would swarm to sting anything that moved quickly after being disturbed. She had been chasing Little Yanyan to prevent her escape and couldn’t afford the luxury of not running, could she?
The swarming hornets quickly left many swollen bumps on her body, causing her to cry out in pain incessantly!
Right from the start, Little Yanyan had taken refuge under her skirt hem, covering herself up tightly.
Hearing Su Xian’er’s cries, delight blossomed in Little Yanyan’s heart!
...
When the hornets finally dispersed, Su Xian’er was left with many swollen lumps on her forehead and arms, clearly the evidence of the hornets’ visit.
With continuous sobs, Little Yanyan cried as if her heart was breaking.
"Aunt Wu, Aunt Wu, are you okay? Woo woo woo... It’s all Yan Yan’s fault, woo woo... Yan Yan just wanted to play hide and seek with Aunt Wu, but then, then, woo woo..."
Her crying grew more heart-wrenching, and she wiped her face continually, soon turning into a tear-soaked figure.
"Stop crying! I’m not dead yet, am I?"
Su Xian’er scolded, bristling with rage.
How could she feel that all this was calculated by the mischievous girl in front of her?
Yet, when she saw Little Yanyan’s tear-streaked face, she shook her head.
Impossible!
The mischievous girl wasn’t even five years old. If she were that cunning, it would be truly astonishing!
Anyway, they had already reached the city gates. She would quickly dispose of the mischievous girl and wash her hands of the matter!
Little Yanyan cried fiercely but secretly glanced at Su Xian’er’s expression out of the corner of her eye.
