Chapter 1174: Chapter 1086: Qin Feimo, You’ve Got Some Nerve!
Su Pan’er also chatted with him casually without being overly warm, nor did she snub him.
Eunuch An saw that they were approaching the side palace hall and hurriedly said with a smile, "Recently, state affairs have been busy. I see that His Majesty has trouble sleeping at night, and it truly pains my heart. Just as things seem to be settling down, the Spring Imperial Civil Service Examination is upon us again. There in the Purple Zen Hall, several scholars from the Hanlin Imperial Academy have been so busy they haven’t returned to their homes for days. It has been quite strenuous."
"In that case, Eunuch An must take extra care of His Majesty’s dragon body," she replied.
Su Pan’er glanced at Eunuch An, understanding the implications of his unspoken words.
Those Hanlin Imperial Academy scholars pride themselves on their status and hold fast to what they call the tenets of propriety. In other words, they are a bunch of old fossils. Anyone who dares to overstep by even a fraction, even if it’s His Majesty, will be verbally chastised by them to the point where they cannot lift their head.
Luckily, Su Pan’er didn’t just barge into the Purple Zen Hall; otherwise, she might still be stuck listening to those old pedants lecturing at this very moment!
"Taking good care of His Majesty’s diet and daily life is my duty. I would not presume to claim undue credit," Eunuch An said.
Eunuch An pointed ahead: "Empress, this is the place where His Majesty rests temporarily when he is fatigued from dealing with state affairs. Please take a moment to rest inside. Should you need anything, just call for me."
This side hall was actually part of the same complex as the Purple Zen Hall. However, Eunuch An had led Su Pan’er around the main hall, taking a half-circle to enter from the rear. Naturally, this made the distance much longer.
Su Pan’er stepped inside and carefully observed the side hall for a moment. There were quite a few valuable furnishings, but even more books and bookcases.
Books filled the bookcases on both sides and in corners of the side hall, extending all the way to the front. In the middle of the side hall, a carpet was laid out, with an Imperial desk placed above it and several small tables and Pu Tuan scattered in front. At the end, there was an intricately carved rosewood screen, and behind it, curtains in bright yellow cascaded from the ceiling to the floor. Through the carved screen, the drawn curtains partially concealed a dragon chaise lounge.
That was Qin Yi’s occasional resting place.
Approaching the Imperial desk, Su Pan’er saw from a distance that there were several neat stacks of Memorials to the Emperor.
She didn’t approach further but chose a spot near the window to stand still. Qingwen, quick on her feet, promptly brought over a chair for Su Pan’er to sit down.
"Empress, these are the pastries prepared for you by His Majesty. Would you see if they are to your liking?"
Eunuch An presented the pastries.
Su Pan’er did not turn around but continued gazing out of the window.
The scenery here was uniquely pleasing!
Though it was just a small corner of a garden, a large patch of winter jasmine had been planted. The slender branches swayed in the wind, already with several buds and a few fully bloomed yellow flowers; as the branches swayed, even the petals trembled slightly.
Without a word from Su Pan’er, Eunuch An dared not say more. He was considering bringing up another topic when Qin Yi hurried over from the Purple Zen Hall’s grand hall.
"Pan’er."
He approached with a smile on his face; he had been at the morning court session, and the morning’s debates had nearly exhausted his patience.
Hearing that the Empress had come, however, had rejuvenated his spirits! After concluding the earlier discussions, he had excused himself to rest for a moment, and rushed over here.
"Your servant greets His Majesty."
"Please rise quickly. Between husband and wife, there is no need for such formalities."
Qin Yi reached out and pulled her up, then made a Signalling with Eyes to the others. Eunuch An and Qingwen, among others, quickly paid their respects and withdrew.
"Ceremonies must not be abandoned. Majesty, I came here today because I have something to ask of you."
Su Pan’er looked at him earnestly, "Your Majesty, I wish to use your side hall to meet someone!"
"Who?"
"A man!"
"..."
The winter jasmine still swayed in the wind.
Qin Yi once again sat upon his dragon throne, listening to the civil and military officials at the lower seats discussing state affairs. His mind wandered off several times, and even when Eunuch An at his side reminded him twice, he still did not snap back to reality.
The courtiers could all sense something was amiss, and when Eunuch An inquired whether there were any more memorials to present, everyone decisively chose silence.
After the morning court session, Qin Yi could not stay seated any longer and hurriedly stood up to head for the side palace hall. There, Pan’er was meeting with that man!
But halfway there, he stopped in his tracks. After pondering for a moment, he turned back, feeling his behavior was inappropriate, and walked away. He had not gone far when he again turned around and briskly walked towards the side palace hall, then paused, turned back, and walked away again... He repeated this several times, causing Eunuch An, who followed closely behind, to also go back and forth.
As a servant, he was supposed to alleviate his master’s worries and difficulties. How could he allow His Majesty to be so troubled?
At once, he glanced around and then smiled. "Your Majesty, your servant noticed that the Empress did not even touch her snacks earlier. She must be hungry by now. Shall we go and check? We wouldn’t want the little Prince to be hungry."
Qin Yi immediately nodded. "You are always so thoughtful. Pan’er has not had much appetite these past few days, but she cannot go without eating. Have the Imperial Kitchen immediately prepare some food and send it here."
Having said this, he finally relaxed and slowly strolled towards the side palace hall.
Eunuch An turned and gave little Lizhi, who was behind him, a sign with his eyes. Seeing Lizhi dash off, he quickly followed Qin Yi.
In the side palace hall, Su Pan’er remained silent, her arms crossed as she glared furiously at the man in front of her.
Opposite her, Qin Feimo sat silently all the while, like a wooden puppet.
"Aren’t you going to say something to me?"
"There is nothing for this Prince to say," Fei Mo replied.
The current Qin Feimo was no longer his former self. His face bore a look of bewilderment, disillusionment, and a freshly emerging stubble, sitting across from her, silent and motionless, so quiet that one could hardly sense his presence.
The Fei Mo of the past was always so vibrant and full of life. She remembered the first time she entered the palace, it was to treat an illness for Imperial Consort Hua.
Back then, he had sworn with great conviction, "I, Qin Feimo, swear! As long as I, Qin Feimo, draw breath, I will never let anyone harm you, including myself!"
The words still rang in her ears, yet things had changed beyond recognition.
Su Pan’er felt a tear in her heart and sighed.
"The festive lanterns on Lantern Festival night were beautiful. I still remember, looking down from the South Wall, the city was half alight with fireworks, half aglow with lights, very beautiful."
"Indeed, very beautiful..." Qin Feimo instinctively agreed, but his face changed a moment later, and he abruptly lifted his head, "You..."
His surprise made him forget to use the proper address.
"Surprised that I know?" Su Pan’er scoffed. "What do you think the answer should be?"
Qin Feimo’s face turned pale then flushed, and after a long while, he suddenly turned his head, not daring to look into Su Pan’er’s eyes any longer.
"This Prince does not know."
"Really? You don’t know? But I do!"
Su Pan’er’s expression darkened, and she suddenly slammed her hand on the dragon desk, "Qin Feimo, you have quite the nerve!"
