Chapter 211: Middle of Day 2 (1)
* * Yuri POV * *
I know he means well but seriously he does remember that i used to be a princess yeah?
Yuriasia Roserun former princess of the Kingdom of Roserun, and Julius’s presumed wife to be, was currently mentally venting to her self as she lay upon the cold ground shrouded in her mantle along with her legion of men.
They had broken away from their lord and marched until they broke their formation and entered the forest, all the way until they reached their current position, it was then that the men hunkered down and took up residence.
For close to two days straight now the men have had to lay on the forest floor not moving much if at all, eating their preserved foods rather than hot cooked meals over a roaring fire.
The men while bitter did not complain all to much as this was rather relaxing getting to just lay there and sleep as much as they wanted to even if it was uncomfortable to do so in full gear, but since the princess didnt complain (at least verbally) neither could they.
As the first day passed the front of their formation got a front row seat at the goings on of the Single combat battles.
Thanks to being on the south side they were closest to their lords position and as such new quickly traveled backward extolling the acheivemnets of their lord and his men against the enemy’s champions.
However as the hours passed the appeal wore off and the men returned to their primary job of just laying there.
Some grouping up to play games with cards, or dice making sure to not make much noise.
The sun continued to wheel overhead as Yuri remained with her gaze fixed on the battlefield until both sides had concluded the fight and pulled back for the night.
*Sigh*
They didn’t draw them out today then, so we must wait another till tommorow to enact the plan.
Julius’s grand plan was to entrap the Greecian army.
The Spartan’s formed the core of the army mean to hold the Greecians in place and once all focus was forward and some to the sides dealing with the new formation, Yuri and the other legion commander would spring the trap, first laying siege to the enemies rear lines via missile fire from their bows, before the legion would appear from north and south to envelop the Greecians cutting off their retreat and driving deep into their undefended flanks.
The wait was untenable however.
Eating jerky and dried fruits knowing the others were probably eating fire cooked roasting meats, drinking wine.
But wait they did and in the morning the battle lines were drawn once more.
The men wanted nothing more than to rush out right now and let loose their frustrations upon their enemy however they needed to wait for the signal from Julius.
And after what felt like eternity watching the raging battle from the distance did the signal come.
Yuri informed the legion via hand signs and every one finally stood up, arching their back and limbs to limber themselves up before grabbing their bows and forming up into lines, taking aim and unleashing aerial hell upon their enemies.
Volley after volley was unleahsed and with it thousands died, many at the greecian rear could not understand what was happen all the way up until they themselves died.
Were their own allies attacking them?
No that’s not possible every man save for the camp guards should be in this fight...
Once the series of volleys had concluded and every man, and woman was out of arrows the silent command was given and the legion like a predatory snake march out of the forest appearing like the spectres of hell to the Greecian generals placed on the hills to the rear.
Their men were still locked into combat with the Spartans and now two other armies had just appears out of no where and were encircling their massive army.
From her commanding position Yuri could plainly see that the General’s were divided, 2 immediately set off running away having consigned this battle as a total loss, one charge forward in an attempt to warn the army of the beast at it’s backs, while the others remained stationed overlook from the hillside.
The Legionaires began to hack their way into the Greecian lines having approached from their rear without raising a single war call.
The Greecians were caught almost completly by surprise as the thing Roman lines had boxed them in.
The now greater than 100,000 man army was surrounded.
The Staggered phalanx pushed hard as the envelopement force continued to tear large pieced of the army force appart from the rear and sides.
In most battles the enemy would retreat after having lost 25% of it’s total force however in this malestrom of blood and bile, the commanders, captains, and foot soldiers had no way of knowing just what was really happening.
And so thanks to this delayed reation more of their force fell victim until word finally spread into their lines and the mens faces collectively paled.
They had been lured and now trapped.
The most violent part of a Hoplite was was not the battle itself... No it was what came when one side routed.
As Hoplites are only defended at the front, if you turned to flee you were undefended and could be slain easily.
However the alternatives were surrendering yourself into slavery or going down fighting until the end.
Attempts were made to break the encirclement by the Romans, however their lines still held only allowing a small handful to break through before running for the hills.
Meanwhile all across the battlefield more and more men had resigned themselves to their fate, casting down their arms and kneeling upon the ground.
Those who refused to cease the fight even cut down their comrades standing upon the fields of corpses as the pressing enemy force continued to advance.
Yuri meanwhile had come forth from the rear to deal with a few problems.
The Commanders of the Greecian force the strongest they had to must save for possibly the generals were the driving force behind breaking her lines with the strength to shatter shields and inflict casualty’s upon her men.
Having advance forth the men made way until she entered the flesh arena, a circle cleared out and walled by men from both sides who just stood and stared at the spectacle about to unfold.
Their Legion commander squared off against a bare chest Greecian commander who’d already slain a number of legionaires.
"Dog’s should know when their beaten." <Yuri>
"And bitch’s should know that their mouths only have one real use!" <Greecian>
The two squared off, Yuri with her Rossade Rapier, and the Greecian with a short spear and shield.
Clank clank clank
A thrust from the spearman but it was diverted by Yuri’s rapier, she immediatly countered with a quick slash of her own, causing just a scratch but still drawing blood from the mans chest.
Her movements like those of a noble woman dancing across a ballroom floor, as in side her head she was composing a melody... a melody of blood.
Unlike Julius who’d ended his fights in a single blow, Yuri was more of a sadist her fight carried on but the onlookers around knew it was over from the first series of clashes.
The greecian commander had been run ragged as his breathing was heavy, hundress of tiny slashes riddled his body all over, his arms so heavy they could no long hold up his spear or shield.
As a final action she charged forwards aptly dodging the twin haymaker last ditch effort sliding between the commanders legs and delivering a deep slash to his calf before standing up and providing his backside one final stab.
This was the end, the commander riddled with wounds collapsed forwards unable to remain standing on his own without support.
Not even bothering to look back, Yuri glared at the Greecians before her.
In a hurry the hundreds of men looking on threw down their arms and knelt before the warrior princess before them.
