Chapter 162: Seas, Borders, and Alliances
- - Julius POV - -
Ahhh this sea breeze is really the best.
Julius was standing at the bow of one of his repossessed warships staring out at the expansive sea stretched before them as the land swiftly slid by their view to the right.
Julius was enacting his plan to absorb what remains of the Lunan kingdom, while also giving Visigoth a reason not to get involved in this technical civil war.
If Visigoth learned Julius had acquired himself the Grand Fleet, their own territory would become at risk as Julius had already proven himself an accomplished commander on land so any invasion would be costly but if he could then attack their rear with a navy their own lands would suffer causing their forces loss of morale, and possible shortage of supplies or even worse being recalled to defend the homefront.
But against an opponent whose superior on land drawing forces away reduces their chance to win since their only advantage would be their strength in numbers.
Should they be able to absorb what is left of Lunan and Bridget his lands and total number of citizens would double or triple which would in due course allow the increased support of a larger army and navy, however taking over all that remains of Lunan would mean a border with Visigoth and with the current national climate that border will be hot, though it’s highly unlikely that Visigoth will do anything, aside from some minor harassment since they’ve suffered needless losses in their conquest of Lunan, still need forces to police the newly conquered areas, and then with the King’s conquest of the Herald kingdom further putting a strain on their military at least for the next few years.
But with their conquering The newly founded Grand Duchy would come to have borders with numerous other nations, though their opinion of us presently is mostly likely pretty neutral since we founded as the lowest rung of an official nation rather than immediately jumping to declare ourselves a kingdom which politically would mean we think we’re just as grand as those nation’s who’ve survived for generations.
The biggest threat to our growing power would be the other two major factions who belong to one of the Twelve original families of the Ancient Empire.
To our West we would border with The Germanic Confederation, a nation of bloodthirsty warriors who fight like barbarians, wielding huge war axes, axemen with shields, and worst of all are the zealots who fight naked while wielding greatswords, ugh that is one battle one need mental fortitude to survive unscathed.
Then to our East, we would come to border The Parthian Sultanate who are skilled cavalrymen who specialize in mounted archers or spearmen.
Both of these nations border the Great Sea and have their own navies though not nearly as grand as Latinum’s but we need to be on our guard in the future to prevent piracy over our trade routes and possible raiding of our lands from the sea.
Our other contender currently would also be the Kingdom of Roserun.
Though technically our ally they are officially still allies to the Lunan kingdom, while their nobility is still fuming over the fact that Aquitania and Yuriasia were not only able to repel the invaders with a paltry force but then also completely suppress the opponent homeland, the young king is upset at his sisters leaving of the nation, and in her absence, many nobles clearly have the kings ear as our scout reported that a military build-up is happening even when their own lands are suffering and should be rebuilt following the recent war.
The home guard was made aware of this and Yuri who while pretty steamed about not getting to come along for this war understood that her best place to be would be with the Legion assigned to defend Latinum’s Western border with the Kingdom of Roserun.
Having seen the world’s current state from his [World Map] skill Julius could tell the era of war was truly beginning however thanks to his own personal involvement, events were differing than they did in the game, and while on immortal difficulty one could never truly predict the AI, having started off even worse than he ever had before, the fact that Lunan existed this long, meant Visigoth had been prevented from declaring war on a number of other kingdoms, their growth potential at the very beginning was heavily stunted.
Carthage thanks to the ongoing civil war had all but been devoured by their neighbours at this point with only a small part of the country still resisting occupation.
The Ramie Kingdom now owned the majority of the lands, while the Principality of Christendom had all but doubled its lands.
None of the world’s other nations had as of yet woken up and begun making significant gains but having seen the events started by the Kingdom of Visigoth surely have begun a process of armament and military build-up to defend their own lands and make some advantageous gains if they can.
The steady advance of the Latinum legions across the lands of Bridget and Lunan was happening virtually unopposed.
Each time he was bored and pulled up the world map, the progress of his forces showed as more and more territories were changing over to his own nation’s colour just like as if he’d unbricked a dam and a tidal flood was washing away the opponent’s colour.
The new territories were pretty bad off, the stats reflected this as everything but their loyalty was low.
It seems his armies were adhering to their professional doctrine by sparing those who chose to surrender, and not pillaging or raping those who did.
Of course, there were some conquored territories that had lower loyalty values these of course were due to the wiping out of some villages and small cities that resisted Latinum rule.
His rule for the army was to not harm the innocent but should they resist standard military rules would apply, the men would be killed, women raped in the streets before being enslaved, and well the children... while his rule stated they should be simply enslaved this was the hardest rule to be enforced as each soldier would view them with a different light some claiming young girls to already be women and therefore their right to "claim" them like the others.
Luckily these occurances were not happening alot as most of Lunan while being fed lies from their leadership were happier to take the promise of surrender and be left unharmed than to experience the horrors of war they know all to well after hearing tales from survivors who’d escaped the north fleeing the free lands in the south.
