Chapter 46: Source of the Vengeful Spirits
"What is that?!" Mo Jian exclaimed in his heart.
This was the first time he had ever heard such a fearful scream. It was a sound that no living creature could possibly make.
Subconsciously, all the hair on his body stood on end, and he unsheathed his sword.
Only by holding his weapon did he find a semblance of solace.
Taking a deep breath, he looked at the decrepit entrance and began to count.
He discovered that the vengeful spirits emerged from the ruins at regular intervals.
After a few minutes of observation, he determined that they appeared every ten seconds.
He exhaled and inhaled deeply, preparing to make a run to the opposite side.
Even though he had broken through to Foundation Realm Stage-3, that did not make him feel any safer.
Against such an army, his strength meant nothing.
Just as the last vengeful spirit left the ruins, Mo Jian dashed out from his hiding spot, pushing his speed to the limit.
’I vow to learn a movement technique when I return,’ he swore to himself.
With his cultivation, covering such a short distance should not have been difficult for him, but without a technique to enhance his speed, his pace was merely average.
On the other side, the two men watched Mo Jian rushing toward them in a dazzling flash of movement, their jaws dropping in astonishment.
’What speed!’
Five seconds later, he arrived at their location and hid under the thick shrub.
"Young Master," they called, their voices filled with shock and respect.
Mo Jian looked at the two men and asked, "Where are the
others?"
The men were silent for a moment before one of them responded, "We were unlucky and encountered a powerful beast. Only the two of us managed to escape."
’Hmm!’
Mo Jian was surprised. He had expected the deaths of the three to be due to the vengeful spirits, but who would have thought a beast was the cause?
How unfortunate.
He did not dwell on the thought for long and instead asked,
"So tell me, what is happening?"
"Young Master, we don’t know," the captain replied, shaking his head. "Since we arrived, the vengeful spirits have never stopped coming out of the ruins."
Mo Jian frowned. "Have you tried going behind the ruins?"
"We tried, but the danger was too great, so we retreated."
"Is the danger from the vengeful spirits or something else?"
"Both."
Hearing this, Mo Jian’s frown deepened. Things were getting more complicated than he had expected. As for returning to the border or the sect?
That thought never crossed his mind.
Since arriving, he had been determined to uncover the secrets hidden within the ruins. His spirit vein was inside, and he had to claim it.
Unless the power within was too great for him to handle.
"We need to enter the ruins," he declared.
The two men were not surprised, and the captain replied,
"We’ve found a hidden spot to enter the ruins."
"Really? Good. Where?"
Looking in the direction the captain pointed, Mo Jian squinted. On the side of the ruins, he noticed many strange vines stretching over the fallen walls.
He studied the area for a moment and nodded. "Let’s enter through that spot."
Quickly, the two men unsheathed their weapons, their expressions solemn.
The captain was a Mortal Rank-8 warrior, while the second man was a Mortal Rank-6 warrior.
Observing their countenance, Mo Jian noted that the men were not afraid and nodded in approval.
"Follow me..."
When another batch of vengeful spirits left the ruins, Mo Jian and the two men rushed toward the designated spot.
Upon arrival, he climbed over the broken wall with swift steps while the two men used the vines to pull themselves up.
On the other side, they saw many dilapidated buildings, crumbling walls, and strange plants. In the distance, a massive tree loomed.
However, that was not what caught Mo Jian’s attention.
His gaze followed the direction from which the vengeful spirits were emerging, and he noticed something peculiar.
A formation!
As a Peak-Tier Formation Master, he recognized its presence immediately. However, that did not bring him any comfort.
Looking at the massive formation, he realized it was a powerful summoning array. The tree at the center of the ruins served as the formation’s core.
And beside the formation stood a spirit over three meters tall.
The Wailing Revenant.
The Wailing Revenant loomed in the center of the ruins, a sorrowful figure stretching over three meters tall under the shroud of darkness.
Its grotesque face, a mask of distortion, wept freely, embodying profound grief.
Shadows clung to its form, deepening the aura of despair as mournful wails resonated through the decaying remnants of the ruins.
Staring at the Wailing Revenant, Mo Jian felt his soul nearly leap out of his body.
A wave of dread washed over him, and he quickly averted his gaze, unable to bear the sight of the towering, weeping figure that evoked such overwhelming sorrow.
"Horrifying!" he gasped, his heart racing as the chilling wails filled the air.
Beside him, the two mortal warriors trembled with fear, their faces pale, eyes wide as they confronted the haunting presence.
All their previous bravado vanished, replaced by an overwhelming sense of vulnerability in the face of the supernatural.
The oppressive darkness of the ruins seemed to close in around them, amplifying their panic. They exchanged terrified glances, silently urging one another to flee.
At that moment, their only thought was to escape this hellish place.
The captain wanted to call out to Mo Jian, but when he saw his solemn expression, he closed his mouth and remained silent.
Mo Jian did not look at the Wailing Revenant. Instead, his gaze remained fixed on the small rift beside it, from which the vengeful spirits emerged.
’So this is the source of the vengeful spirits,’ he thought.
A look of realization crossed his face as he averted his gaze.
Against the Wailing Revenant, he was nothing more than an ant. Throwing his life away like a fool was not an option.
A new plan was already forming in his mind.
Others might be helpless against such a terrifying entity, but he was not.
The person or group behind the vengeful spirits had made one crucial mistake.
