Chapter 155: A Promise Tested
Chapter 155: A Promise Tested
Early the next morning just as the first rays of sunlight began to filter through his dormitory window Eric was jolted awake.
He was woken by a loud insistent knocking at his door. It was rapid and urgent. It was not a polite summons. It was the sound of an emergency.
Who could be at my door so early in the morning? he wondered.
A sense of groggy confusion still clung to him. He quickly stood up from his bed.
His body was still aching from the previous night’s brutal training session. He hurried to the door to see who it was.
He pulled the door open and was surprised to see Void and Kado standing there.
Behind them a small group of other students all members of his newly formed group The New Warriors were gathered. Their faces were etched with a palpable sense of anxiety and fear.
Eric was immediately taken aback. The expressions on Void’s and Kado’s faces were a stark contrast to their usual demeanor. Void’s playful teasing smirk was completely gone.
It was replaced by a grim seriousness. Kado’s defiant angry scowl was absent. His features were now a mask of deep troubled concern. Something was very wrong.
"What happened?" Eric asked his own sense of unease growing as he looked at their worried faces.
Void took a deep steadying breath. "Last night," he said his voice low and serious "Ryan was attacked. He was beaten up very badly. He’s in the nurse’s office right now."
The words hit Eric like a physical blow. It felt as if the ground had been ripped out from under his feet. A look of pure unadulterated shock spread across his face.
"Attacked?" he repeated his voice a disbelieving whisper. He stepped closer to Void his mind reeling. "Who did it? Who attacked him?"
Void remained silent for a few seconds. His gaze was hard and serious.
"We don’t know yet," he finally admitted. "Kado and I came straight to you as soon as we heard the news. Eric," he added his voice now even more serious
"all the students in our group... there is a palpable sense of fear among them now. They are all very scared. They are wondering if they will be next. Remember what you promised them yesterday?"
Void’s words were a stark reminder of his—or rather of Adam’s—powerful vow. He had promised to protect every single member of his group more than he protected his own life.
That promise was now being tested on the very first day. A fresh wave of anxiety washed over Eric.
What was he supposed to do now? Just then he recalled his conversation with the [System Window] from the previous night. It had told him to leave everything to it.
As if it were reading his thoughts the familiar transparent interface of the [System Window] materialized before him. It was visible only to him.
[Host Eric you must go to Ryan at once. I need to be there to conduct an investigation into this matter.]
The message was clear. It was a direct command. Eric nodded his head internally.
His own chaotic thoughts were momentarily silenced by the System’s clear directive.
He had a task to do. He looked at Void and Kado his earlier confusion replaced by a new albeit still nervous sense of purpose.
"Let’s go," he said his voice firm. "Take me to Ryan now."
Void and Kado exchanged a surprised glance. They were taken aback by Eric’s sudden decisiveness by his firm tone. The other students who had gathered behind them also began to move.
They were ready to follow their leader. Eric quickly closed and locked his door. He then fell into step behind them his mind racing as they hurried down the hallway.
As they hurried down the hallway of the dormitory Kado spoke his voice laced with a practical if somewhat pessimistic concern. "You remember that today is the first day of classes right?" he said.
"And today is also the day when they will decide the class sections for all the students based on their exam results. If you’re late for that... we already have too many eyes on us watching us. I don’t want us to get into any more trouble with the teachers on our first day."
Eric understood Kado’s point. It was a very valid concern. He nodded. "Just get me to the nurse’s office," he replied.
"After that I’ll take care of it. All of you should go to your classes when the time comes. Don’t be late because of me. I will handle this."
Void who would normally be indifferent to such mundane concerns as class schedules now found himself in a difficult position. He was intrigued by this situation.
He wanted to see how Eric would handle this first real test of his leadership. But he was also constrained by the need to maintain his cover as a normal student. He looked at Eric his expression a mixture of frustration and a strange almost paternal concern.
"Eric," he said his voice serious "if you want to keep this group of yours together you have to respond to this attack in a strong way. You are the founder. You are the leader. They are all looking to you to see what you will do."
Eric didn’t reply to Void’s words. He knew on some level that Void was right. A leader should lead. A leader should respond to threats. But he also remembered the [System Window]’s clear instructions from last night. His only job was to train.
His only job was to become stronger. The System would handle everything else. And right now the System had given him a clear simple command.
Go to the nurse’s office.
He chose to trust that command above all else. He didn’t even think about the larger implications of the attack or how he as a leader should respond to it in a strategic way. He was simply following orders.
He was following the orders of the only thing he knew he could trust in this strange and dangerous new world.
He trusted the System to guide him.
