Chapter 64: Old Flames Die Hard!

(Kira’s POV)

_______

I was sitting in my car, staring at the phone in my hand. I had no idea how long I had remained like that. All I knew was that I was in that position, staring at my phone as if it had suddenly grown wings and was trying to fly away from my grip. However, nothing happened, despite how hard I looked at it.

"What are your secrets?" Casey’s last words to me resounded in my head dully. "The reason Maven targeted you?"

I let out a sigh as I tossed the phone on the seat beside me. I couldn’t believe that the call had gone that way. Was Casey really mad at me? Because for a moment it seemed like she was taking Jace’s side in all this. What exactly could have brought this about? Had she figured out my secret already?

"No..." I shook my head vehemently as I gripped the wheel hard. Casey couldn’t know just yet, I couldn’t allow it. I had already come so far, I knew I should have told her about me a long time ago, but now she would only be hurt when she finally realized that I kept such a huge thing from her.

Yet, I was beginning to see why keeping things from her was a bad idea. Casey was smart and she knew very well that Maven had something against me, it was only a matter of time before she figured out what it was. And it was clear that despite everything I told her last night when she was at my place, she was still very much interested in knowing what Maven had over me.

I knew that if she succeeded in finding Maven, then I was done for. I was still trying to prevent that, which was why I was currently downtown, more than halfway across Paragon Park where I lied to Lena that I was headed to. This was the part of the job I didn’t want her to know about because I was sure that she would very much disagree with it. I couldn’t have that.

I sucked in a breath as I looked around. The place was clearly ghetto, and it was poorly lit. There were young men and some ladies hanging around in clusters all over the place, every now and then, I saw a flame light up as someone smoked a joint.

I shivered in my seat, sitting here in my fancy car, I felt exposed. This had to be one of the worst parts of Silicon Valley, and I was taking a huge risk by coming here.

"Come on... where the hell are you?" I muttered, squinting hard as I tried to see through the darkness.

Just then, I saw a hooded figure approaching my car from the passenger side. As she came closer, I could make out the figure and saw that it was a woman, causing me to let out a breath of relief. She opened my car and slipped into the seat beside me. I picked up my phone and tossed it on the dashboard.

I frowned at her, "what the hell, Zayn?" I demanded, "You kept me waiting for over ten minutes, you know how rough this neighborhood is."

She waved that off, "No one is going to touch you here. You’re under my protection."

Zayn took off her coat and folded it over her lap, revealing the tight bodycon gown that she was wearing. It was tight and snug as it clung to her body, the neck was low-cut and her endowed breasts strained against the material, giving off a generous view of her cleavage. She had dark full hair that draped down both sides of her face, resting beautifully on her shoulders. I could see that her face was properly made up and she had chosen the dress for a reason. Zayn had dressed specifically to seduce.

"You like what you see?" She asked with a husky tone, one she knew that I had always liked.

Zayn was an old flame. She was my second relationship with a woman and our time together had been wild. She was a wildflower and she loved to explore on a deep level, she had shown me parts of myself that I never even knew existed. Sadly though, our paths were too different.

She came from a rich family, which was how we met. However, she had a thing for crime. Right now, she was into drugs. She ran a sophisticated network through Silicon Valley, supplying hard drugs to the rich folk.

She had managed to corner the market all for herself and was making a shitload of money. This wasn’t the kind of person I wanted to be associated with, even though we were in a relationship. I wanted nothing to do with her crimes and I knew that if the word ever got out, my Uncle would have stricken me out of the family tree. I couldn’t allow that.

So, I made the hard choice of letting her go. She couldn’t leave the life of crime to be with me, and I couldn’t sacrifice Beacon Studios for her either. It was a mutual decision and while painful, it was what was best for us at the time. Yet, anytime we met up, the old feelings always came rushing back in a way that I had never been able to experience before. Not with my first girlfriend, and not with my current.

And now, I could tell her plans as she looked me over in my seat, "I hear congratulations are in order. You got engaged."

I nodded at her, "yeah."

"You didn’t invite me to the dinner though," she said as she pouted. She reached over and took my hand.

"That was the rehearsal dinner. You can come to the main dinner soon." I said as I retracted my hand, just having her nearby was making me feel things I didn’t want to feel at all.

She scoffed, "Since when did you get scared of my touch?"

"Zayn, come on. This is not why I’m here."

She shifted in her seat so she could see me better, "Don’t tell me you’re really in love with Jace... come on! You and I know that would be a lie. He can’t make you happy, not the way I could. No one can make you happy like that."

I let out a breath as I tucked my hair behind my ear, "it’s not Jace. I already told you that what we have is a business deal and nothing else."

"Oh my God... you’re not even married yet and you’re already cheating on him? You slut! Who is it? Do I know her?"

"What makes you think it’s a girl? I’m bisexual, remember?"

"I know you, girl, you won’t go to all that trouble for a man."

I shifted as well, "You don’t know her, and let’s leave it at that okay? Please."

Zayn looked at me as if she was thinking hard, "It’s good to see you again, you know. Even though we don’t talk much anymore, and you only call me when you need me. Still, I love hearing your voice. I still love you, Kira, and when you call, no matter how much I try to ignore you, I can’t help but turn up for you."

I bit my lower lip, "Thank you, believe me, I know what I’m asking of you. It also takes a lot for me to come here."

"You mean coming to chill with your drug dealer ex? That’s all I’m ever gonna be to you, isn’t it?"

"Zayn!"

"Don’t you dare patronize me, Kira! You don’t even want to be seen with me! My business is under tight wraps, I’ve got cops on my payroll who work for me and make sure that I slide through the cracks in the law. Besides all this, I’m still the daughter of one of the fucking richest billionaires in this country. You shouldn’t just discard me simply because of what I do."

"I’m sorry, okay? But it’s different for you. You’re not the only child, okay? Hell, you’re not even the first or second child! You get to choose how your life plays out. For me, it’s Beacon Studios or nothing. I can’t afford to give my uncle a single reason to think I’m incapable of taking charge."

"You fucking bitch! He already thinks so and you know it!" Zayn blared, "he’s not going to let you take control of Beacon simply because you don’t have a dick! That’s how it’s always been with you, my uncle this, my uncle that! You’re allowing him to control and ruin your life. He already ruined our relationship, even without knowing about me." She then stopped as she stared at me, "Or did he? Or do you simply use your uncle as an excuse?"

"Zayn, what do you mean?" I asked exasperatedly.

"Are you being seen with your current girlfriend? Are you still hiding her? Or is she in the drug business as well? Or are you simply using her to secure your company? Knowing you, that’s not farfetched."

"Don’t say that! It’s different with her!"

"How so? You’re still hiding her! You refuse to tell a soul about her. The only reason you told me is because I know you better than you know yourself. And that’s why I’m telling you this, nobody will ever love you as much as I loved you. And no one will make you feel the way I made you. Not even this girl you’ve found for yourself."

"Why are you being like this?" I cried, "this is not why I called to see you!"

"You’re right, but there is just too much baggage between us. I’m sorry, I should never have come here!" She unlocked the door and was about to step out.

"Zayn no!" I cried as I grabbed her hand. "Please, don’t go. I need you."

She turned to face me, I could see tears in her eyes. Then, before I could say a word, she leaned across the seat and planted her lips on mine, giving me a deep and searing kiss.
