Chapter 53: Heart Of A Fighter...

(Casey’s POV)

____________

"Jace!!!" I screamed in horror as I watched Jace pitch through the air, vaulting over the ditch and slamming into a parked car with enough force to smash the windows to bits.

Ramon had seemingly come out of nowhere. Just as Jace had been about to turn into the alley, Ramon had also been running out of it, both of them going at full speed. Unfortunately, Ramon was heavier and when they slammed into each other, Jace went flying.

"Oh my God!" I cried as I hurried over to Jace as he slid down the side of the car to the ground. I tapped him gently on his cheek, "Come on, Jace!! Answer me!"

The collision had done a number on him, even Ramon had also pitched backward and fallen to the ground. However, from the corner of my eye, I saw him slowly get to his feet. He wiped blood from his nose.

"No!" I gasped as I tried to pick Jace up.

His eyes slowly fluttered open, he whispered "Casey?"

"Oh thank God! You’re okay!" I cried in appreciation, for a moment there, I was terrified that I had lost him. "Come on, let’s get you– ahh!!!" I screamed out in pain as I was suddenly grabbed by my hair and yanked backward.

Ramon was gripping me hard as he pulled me away and threw me to the ground. My head rang shrilly as it slammed into the unforgiving ground. For a few seconds, I blacked out, but when I came to, I saw that he was heading straight for Jace who was still on the ground. I couldn’t allow that.

I got to my feet, "Ramon!"

With a loud cry, I went after him, distracting him. As I ran toward him, ready to do anything I could to get him away from Jace, he turned to face me. Then, as if in slow motion, I watched his ham-sized hands bunch into fists as they sailed right toward my face. At that moment, the thought that zipped through my mind was the fact that Ramon had no issues with beating up a woman, and I was about to learn that the hard way.

I didn’t even have the time to try and duck the punch. I simply braced for the hit. However, the fist froze up a few inches from my face, and then Ramon was pulled back roughly by the neck. He was turned around and slammed hard into the roof of the car. Behind him, Jace stood defiantly and looking quite recovered. His eyes were bloodshot and he looked furious.

"You dare lay a hand on Casey?!" He thundered as he pummeled Ramon with punches.

For me, I was just happy that Jace was strong enough to stand on his feet. I knew that the blow from Ramon must have hurt like hell.

However, Ramon recovered pretty quickly and threw a punch of his own at Jace who ducked smoothly, stepping out of the way and jumping over the ditch. Ramon was throwing fast punches but Jace was faster. Thanks to his lighter frame, he could easily duck around the punches. Then, he slammed a heavy one into Ramon’s gut and followed it up with an uppercut smack into the jaw.

Ramon staggered backward and slammed into the car, shattering what was left of the side windows. He stared at Jace with bloodshot eyes, looking like he was going to kill him. Then, without a word, he turned and hurried around the car.

I realized then that the smashed car was Ramon’s. He was only trying to get out of there. Jace figured it out as well and hurried after him.

"You’re not going anywhere, Ramon!" Jace cried as he leaped over the bonnet, slid across it, and smashed his foot into the man’s face, causing him to fall to his knees.

They were now on the street, Ramon was trying to fight Jace, but he was failing. Meanwhile, I was looking frantically around for Ethan. Where the hell was he? How long was it going to take him to come back to us?

As Jace tried to fight Ramon off, I took out my phone and dialed Ethan’s number. He picked it on the first ring.

"Where the hell are you?" I screamed into the phone. "Ramon is here, he’s attacking Jace! Get here right now!"

I cut the call just as Jace shoved Ramon against the car, shoving his head through the window.

"You stay down, okay?" Jace said, breathing heavily as he twisted the man’s arm behind him. "Just because you’re bigger doesn’t make you my match. There’s no situation where you’d be getting out of here before I’m done with you."

With a grunt, Ramon pushed him away. He reached into the car and pulled out a dagger.

"Oh my God!" I gasped in horror as the stainless steel caught the glint of the sunlight and reflected it wickedly. The weapon looked evil. I was genuinely scared for Jace. "Jace!"

However, Ramon was already hacking away, swiping at Jace like a madman, trying to cut him up.

"I’m not going down for this!" he was saying, his voice raised maniacally as he kept trying to slash through Jace’s throat. "I’d rather die than become a patsy for you guys!"

The more he struck, the more Jace backed away, timing him and looking carefully for the perfect moment to strike.

The moment he got it, he watched as Ramon plunged the dagger towards his chest, he then stepped out of the way at the very last moment. He caught the offending hand and chopped it hard with his fist, causing Ramon to drop the weapon. However, his second hand was free, he brought it up in a fist and slammed it into Jace’s jaw with a sickening thud.

"Jace!!" I screamed in horror as Jace staggered backward and fell to the ground.

Ramon turned then and ran toward me, dagger raised high above his head.

"Holy shit!" I screamed as I turned and ran away. Thankful that I had worn sneakers on this trip. Sadly, that didn’t do me much good because even as I ran, I could hear his heavy footfalls behind me, getting louder and louder by the second.

Soon, I was grabbed roughly from behind and tossed to the ground. Just as I rolled away, Jace leaped into the air and threw his entire body into Ramon, knocking him off guard.

"Casey," he turned to me, "are you okay? You need to get out of here!"

"I’m not leaving– watch out!" I screamed as Ramon bounced back with deft quickness. He grabbed Jace by the collar and shoved him away.

This didn’t do anything to put Jace down, however, it bought Ramon the precious seconds that he needed. Because the moment he could, he grabbed me by my hoodie and pulled me to my feet. I was fighting him hard and trying to get out of his grip when I suddenly felt the cold blade of the dagger rest against my neck.

"Good girl," Ramon whispered in my ear. "Now, if you love your life, I suggest you listen to me and do exactly as I say."

With his dagger at my throat, I didn’t have a choice.
