Chapter 52: The Chase
Chapter 52: The Chase
(JACE’S POV)
_________
"Holy shit!" I gasped as the box kept tumbling down the steps, barreling on towards us.
"Get out of the way!" Ethan cried.
At once, I turned and grabbed Casey who was behind me, I pushed her against the wall, pressing my body against hers as if I was trying to push her through the cracks. Ethan Grabbed the railing and vaulted over it in a quick move, one that I would never have been able to do in such a short time.
The box tumbled one more time and barreled on, directly for me. I could hear Casey’s scream as I squeezed against her, my eyes shut tight so I didn’t see the boulder of death looming towards us. It soon leaped off the final step and launched into the air. I felt the wind as it shot past Casey and I, brushing lightly against the back of my head. With just a little kiss.
"Jace!" Casey screamed as she held tightly to me.
With a deafening crash, the box slammed into the railing. The railing was made of metal, however, it was so old that parts of it had rusted. The moment the box crashed through it, the railing gave way at once, causing the entire wall to tremble.
It was as if the very ground we were standing on wobbled and Casey lost balance as she grabbed onto me. For a moment, I thought that the wall was going to collapse as well. However, the wall didn’t. I was still pressed up against her when we heard the deafening crash of the box as it hit the ground.
"Holy shit!" I gasped against Casey’s ear. That had been a close one indeed.
Now that the danger was gone, I pulled away from her, taking her hand, "Are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?"
"I’m fine," she replied as she looked at me, "what about you? Turn around let me see you! Did that box hit you?"
"It’s nothing," I told her. "I’m fine"
"What the hell were you thinking?" She suddenly blared in anger, "That box could have cut your head clean off! Are you insane?!"
"Would you have rather it cut off your head?" I replied. "Because we can rearrange that."
"This is what I don’t want!" Ethan cried suddenly as he returned to us, "I told you that this would be dangerous! Either one of you could have been hurt! You have to get back to the car, now!"
"We don’t have time for this, Ethan!" I told him, "Ramon is in there, we still need to find him. Now, you can stand here and talk about danger all day? Or you can help us get this son of a bitch!"
I then led the way to the front door, I pushed it open but as expected, it didn’t budge. I turned the knob, throwing my weight against it, but that didn’t work either.
"Let me..." Ethan said.
I stepped out of the way, he then raised his foot and with all the strength he could muster, Ethan kicked at the knob. Once, twice... on the third kick, the knob was knocked off and the door flew open, slamming into the wall behind it with a loud bang.
Ethan led the way into the house, looking around in search of Ramon. We trooped in after him, going from room to room, but it was all empty. There were signs that Ramon had been planning to go away for a long time. All his clothes had been packed and the house lacked any personal effects. It was clear that he had placed them all in the box.
"Fuck!" Ethan cursed, "He’s not here! That box mishap cost us precious moments!"
"You’re not giving up yet, are you?" I asked him, "Let’s look at this critically, he wasn’t expecting us, so we can assume that he’s still not thinking straight."
"If he didn’t get out through the front door, he most likely went out through the back," Casey said.
"That’s in the kitchen," Ethan said.
We all went there and sure enough, the door was half open, a sign that it had hastily been closed but Ramon had not bothered to make sure that it was properly closed. When we walked through the door, we found an emergency exit. It had a ladder that stretched to the ground.
"Oh boy..." I muttered, this was the way Ramon had escaped. While his box had almost taken my life, he had been climbing down this staircase. There was no way he could have gone far.
"I see him!" Ethan said suddenly, he pointed in the distance and sure enough, we could see Ramon running as fast as he could. "He’s taking the back alley, that would help him get back to the front of the house. If he had a car, he would be going for it. We can’t allow him to escape!"
"Okay then, go after him!" I cried.
He made to get on the ladder but stopped, "I don’t want to leave you behind."
"Just go!!!" I snapped.
With a grunt, he leaped onto the ladder and began to climb down with deft moves. We watched as he hit the ground and began to run as fast as he could after Ramon.
"Catching up with Ramon won’t be easy," Casey said.
"I trust Ethan, but he’s not as young and agile as he used to be." I agreed, "also he left this neighborhood more than ten years ago. There are a lot of changes that he wouldn’t know about."
"So, what are you saying?"
"If Ramon is trying to get to a vehicle, we have to try and block him off," I told her.
I turned and hurried back out of the house with Casey hot on my heels.
"Come on, hurry!" I said as I hurried down the stairs, past the destroyed railings until we got to level ground. I looked around, I had no idea where the back alley would lead Ramon.
"This way!" Casey said suddenly as she led the way.
"What? How do you know?"
"This is where most of the cars are parked, including ours! I’m sure his car would be one of these, and thus, the alley would be here somewhere." Casey said hurriedly as she ran.
We kept running and soon, we could see the opening of the alley come up. We were almost there. Casey was still in front of me, leading the way. I ran faster and overtook her, wanting to get to the alley before her. Just as I was about to turn into the alley, I felt something heavy slam into me. The hit came with enough force that I was lifted into the air and tossed like a rag doll against a car.
Somewhere in another universe, I heard the musical tune of shattering glass as I slowly crumpled to the ground.
