Chapter 40: A Lover And A Spy

(KIRA’S POV)

________

Lena remained seated in the bed, she had the sheets pulled up against her chest as she stared at me walking all over the room like a crazy woman. She still had no idea what was going on.

"What is it that you want me to do?" She asked.

I paused in my pacing as I turned to look at her. I sucked in a deep breath, then I walked to the bed and climbed in to sit down yoga-style before her.

"I need you to go to the Royale Hotel," I told her.

"What?!" Lena cried in shock as she stared at me, "what the hell are you saying? You already said that Jace and Casey are on their way there, why then do you need me there? I’m supposed to be at the company, keeping things running while Jace is absent, not following him to the hotel. He won’t even like it when he sees me there."

"That’s the thing, Lena. He can’t know you’re there, no matter what. Remember what I told you yesterday? We have to keep Jace and Casey from finding out about us. We can achieve that by finding Maven first and making sure that he doesn’t tell them anything."

"Whoa... hold on a minute," she shifted backward as if she wanted to get a clearer view of me, "are you saying that I’m going there like a spy or something?"

"That’s exactly what I’m saying. I would have gone myself, but then the hotel staff would make a big deal out of it and probably make it worse."

"Jace is going himself! How big a deal can it get?"

"I won’t be able to hide from Jace, not with all their staff fawning over me and trying to impress me. But that won’t be the case for you. You’ll go as if you’re sent by Jace, and speak directly to Joan. Ask her everything she knows about the case."

"Everything she knows? I thought Casey told you all that last night?"

I shook my head, "there’s more. I also need you to get the footage that captured the stalker at my door. Let me see if I would be able to recognize him."

Lena’s head fell as her shoulders slumped, running her hands through her hair as she stared down at the bed, "what you’re asking me to do is just too much. If this gets out, Jace would find out that I’m telling lies using his name. He won’t like that."

"It would never get out, I promise you. I’m going to protect you, babe."

She groaned as she got off the bed and made her way to the window, looking out onto the lush environs of Paragon Park. She was naked but she didn’t care about that. There was no reason to care though because no one could see her, not at that height and distance.

"I don’t like this, Kira." She said, "I don’t like how we’re lying to our friends. Let’s just tell them who we are, then all these hide and seek would end."

"No, it wouldn’t." I got up and went to stand beside her, "Once Jace learns that you and I are together, you know what it means, right? You’re basically sleeping with his rival. Do you think he’ll still keep you around then?"

"But you’re getting married."

"We’re not yet married, and for now, we’re still rivals in the business trying to outwit the other... so you see the dilemma that would place you? This is why I’m telling you that we wait! Until I’m married to Jace and the company is mine, then even if he finds out, he won’t be able to do a thing about it."

"Oh my God..." she gripped the window as she shook back a sob. "I can’t believe this."

"I just need you to trust me, babe. I won’t allow anything to happen to you." I told her as I gently helped her back up and guided her to the bed.

I felt terrible about myself for convincing her to do something that she didn’t want to do. I had repeated Maven’s threat to her, all so she would do what I wanted. However, I had no choice. I just had to do it if we were going to succeed. Lena had to know the stakes on ground so she could do what needed to be done.

She wiped her tears and looked at me, "Fine. I’ll go to the Royale Hotel and find out what Joan knows."

"Thank you, baby, thank you so much. It won’t take much, just a simple in and out. I promise!"

"I’ll have to go home first, to get a change of clothes. I’ll go corporate." She said flatly.

"Sure, anything you want."

She got up from the bed and was about to go to the bathroom when she stopped, "are you sure about this?"

Mentally, I slapped my forehead in frustration, "of course, I am."

"I mean, he could be going somewhere else and not to the Royale. Maybe he’s going to that lawyer he went to see yesterday. So, there could be more important things to Jace than Maven. Have you thought about that?"

I stopped at that as I stared at her, out of everything she said, nothing else stuck except the one bit about the lawyer.

"He went to his lawyer last night?" I asked. "He’s a fucking billionaire, shouldn’t his lawyer come to him?"

Lena only rolled her eyes, "Well, he went to see his lawyer, for some..." She caught herself then, her eyes widening in shock as she realized that she had spoken too much.

"Don’t you dare do that to me, Lena!" I snapped as I walked up to her, "I know how this goes, you visit the lawyer when you want to keep your meeting a secret. Not the other way around. What is that thing that Jace wants to keep secret?"

"I don’t know, okay?" She snapped right back at me, almost as if she was angry. "it’s not like he took me with him, is it?"

"You didn’t go with him, huh?" I muttered as I kept my eyes on her. "but you do know what the meeting was about, right?"

She looked away and tried to walk into the bathroom, but I grabbed her by the arm.

"I... uh... I..." No coherent word could come from her mouth. "I can’t tell you!"

And that was all I needed to hear.

"Holy shit!" I gasped in shock.

At that moment, I knew that Jace was planning something terrible for me. And my girlfriend knew what it was!
