Chapter 29: Difference Of Opinions
Chapter 29: Difference Of Opinions
(CASEY)
_______
A few hours after I left Jace’s office, I still couldn’t stop thinking about our conversation. I was at my office, trying to round up all my activities for the day. Thankfully, I had been able to get some major things done. I didn’t do everything on my schedule due to the things that came up, but the ones I missed out on were pushed to tomorrow. At the very least, I had managed to seal the deal with Klevah TV, which put a positive spin on the entire day for me.
However, everything else seemed to have gone horribly wrong for me. I had sex with Jace, against my better judgment. And now, he wanted us to tell Ethan about our affair. Even now, thinking about how crazy it all was made me tremble with nerves. I just couldn’t believe that Jace would allow such a thought to cross his mind.
"No!" I had refused vehemently when he tried to tell me the reasons Ethan would have to be in the know. "I don’t care about his police background or the fact that we do need his help. We cannot just tell him, period! We cannot tell anybody at all!"
"I know why you’re scared babe," Jace said quietly. "But I’ve known Ethan for a long time now, and I’m telling you that we can trust him to keep his mouth shut."
"No... do you know how valuable such information would be to him if he decides to betray you? Just because he hasn’t done anything to make you doubt him doesn’t mean he won’t do it if he gets the chance. I don’t feel comfortable with this at all."
"Well then, what do you suggest? How do you plan for us to go after the stalkers on our own? Where the hell do we start? I’m not a detective, Casey! All I know is how to make money. Are you a detective?!"
At that, I lowered myself into the chair and folded my arms across my jacket as I looked away, "I’m just saying that three is a crowd. Jace, the minute we tell one person, it would only be a matter of time before someone else learns about it, and I can assure you that it will all go downhill from there! We need to keep this between us."
"Then bring up a suggestion, okay? Because so far, you’re not doing anything except shooting down my ideas!"
"Don’t do that, Jace!" I told him, "I agree that we should get Ethan to help us track down the stalkers, but I also feel that we should tell him just the same thing we plan to tell Kira, it should only be on a need-to-know basis."
Jace thought about this for a while and slowly shook his head, "Nah, I don’t support this. I still think that Ethan would see through it all. He already knows that I’m having an affair, he knows I’m seeing someone. He just doesn’t know who it is yet."
"Whoa! Back the fuck up!" I surged to my feet as I stared at him in horror, "Ethan knows about us? Why the hell am I just learning of this now?"
"You heard me, he doesn’t know who you are. But he does know I’m seeing a woman that’s not Kira."
I felt my breath seize in my chest, "I can’t believe this. How the hell did this happen?"
"He saw a hickey on my neck the morning I left your hotel room, he also deduced it after all my sneaking around. He knows there’s someone in my life and he’s been bugging me to tell him who you are."
"Don’t you see? It all makes sense now!" I shook my head, "What if Ethan was the one who told Kira about us, which was why she’s threatening thunder and brimstone to destroy your lover? And the reason Kira doesn’t know I’m the ’crazy bitch’ she wants to kill is because Ethan doesn’t know it yet. So, by telling him, you’re basically delivering me for slaughter to your fiancée."
At that, Jace took a step back as he thought about it, "That can’t be the case. Ethan is loyal to me, he’s worked for me for years. I dare say we’re friends. He won’t do something that would deliberately hurt me. I can assure you of that."
"Just get off your high horse okay? You don’t know anyone, especially when you have no idea what they’ll do to get what they want."
Just then, Jace clutched his head in his hands as he sucked in a deep breath, "I can’t believe I’m here arguing about my CSO’s loyalty. This wasn’t my plan when I invited you here, I simply wanted to spend time with the woman I love. But things have gone so wrong."
"We should have been expecting something like this, either way, we still have to deal with it."
"My plan still remains the same, Casey. We’re telling Ethan everything. I think you’re wrong about him, he also didn’t tell Kira about us. In due time, we’ll figure out how she knew. But for now, we have a more important issue to fix, we have stalkers and we have no idea what they know about us. The sooner we get to the bottom of that, the better for us. And Ethan will get us there."
At that point I had enough, "I can’t stay here and listen to you ignore my opinions on this."
I got up then and picked up my purse, ready to leave. But Jace got up and walked around the desk to take my hands, "Hey, please let’s not fight again. It’s just... you still haven’t put up a good argument as to why Ethan shouldn’t be trusted. I’ve known him for far longer than you, and I’m asking you to trust my judgment."
I looked at him and gave a sigh, then I slowly pulled my hands from his as I walked past him, making my way to the door.
"Casey wait..." he called.
I stopped and turned to look at him, "I can’t go ahead with this if you’re not on board with it. It’s both our lives we’re talking about here."
"Are you sure? Because for a moment, it looked like you were only concerned about your boyfriend, Ethan!"
"Just uhm... just take some time to think about it, okay? I still think it’s the best way forward, but I’ll give you time to come up with a different solution that will work best for both of us. If by morning you don’t have any, we’ll have to go with my plan, understand?"
"Jace..."
"No..." he shook his head. "Do you understand me?"
"Fine!" I sneered, and then with a flick of my hair, I stormed out of the office.
I had come straight to the office and now, rounding up for the day, I was still yet to come up with something good to save me from this mess I found myself in. At this point, I was desperate because the last thing I wanted was to tell an outsider about my affair. I was still terrified of revealing my secret, and I was so sure that once we took that step, it would lead to chaos. I wasn’t ready for that.
Either way, I still had other things to do, like telling Kira about her stalker. Maybe talking to Kira would help me figure out a plan that would save us all. I picked up my phone and dialed her number. I’ve been trying to reach her all day and she has been ignoring my calls. If not I needed to talk to her at the moment, I would have gone the rest of the day without speaking to her. Because if I was being honest, I didn’t care at that point.
Kira answered the call on the first ring, the first thing I heard was the sound of traffic through the phone.
"Hi, Kira..." I greeted. "Where are you?"
"I’m on my way to the Valley," She replied. "I should get there soon. Uhm... Casey, you good?"
I sucked in a deep breath, "honestly, I have no idea."
"I’m sorry I didn’t answer your calls all day, it’s been hectic for me."
"I understand," I replied, even though I knew it was a lie. I was sure that nothing she went through was up to half of what I did. My day had enough ups and downs to make me queasy. However, that was not the point, I still had a mission at hand, "Kira, there’s something I need to talk to you about."
"Oh..." she paused. "That’s right, we do need to talk. Can you come to my house? I’ll be there soon."
"Okay then," I replied as the line went dead in my ear.
As I slowly lowered the phone I felt my heart thud heavily in my chest, her words resounded dully in my head:
"That’s right, we do need to talk!"
It told me all I needed to know about Kira. I had known her for years and I knew all her tells! Something was going on with Kira. Something bad.
Kira was in trouble!
