Chapter 28: "I Know What You Are!"

(KIRA)

________

"I know what you are!"

The words rang dully in my head as I clutched my phone tightly. I stared at the cryptic text, my heart thudding heavily. My thoughts were all over the place, I didn’t know what to do or how to handle this development.

I was now on the bed, my laptop was still open on the desk, but it was now hibernating. The minute I saw the text, all strength left my body. I became sick and the only thing I could do was crawl into bed. The mere thought that someone had figured out my secret was daunting and scary.

For the umpteenth time since the message came into my phone, I scrutinized it yet again, I checked all the details to see if I could find something to identify who sent it. However, I found nothing at all. There was not even a phone number. It was as if the message had simply appeared on my phone. I knew that wasn’t possible. Someone had to have sent it, but from what I could see, they had taken care to hide who they were.

"What am I going to do?" I whispered to myself as I slowly dropped the phone to the bed. I wondered who it was that could text me like that. I was certain that they knew about my sexual orientation. They knew that I was bisexual and I was pretty sure that they also knew that I had a girlfriend. What exactly were they expecting to get by sending me such a text? Because the only thing they had achieved was to scare me to death.

Truth be told, I was terrified. I had built my life in a manner that I felt was best for me, regardless of the fact that I knew I was denying myself true happiness. Knowing the kind of family I had, it felt like the right thing to do. And now, I’ve come so far that at this point coming out of the closet could very well destroy everything I had worked towards. This was one thing I wanted in the entire world; telling everyone that I was attracted to both men and women, showing Lena off as my girlfriend, and being able to kiss her in front of paparazzi without having to bother about what people would say.

Sadly, there was nothing normal about my world. I had hidden my sexual orientation for so long and I had done it so well that even Casey had not suspected. It helped that I was also attracted to guys because that helped to quell any suspicions on her part. She was blissfully ignorant and I liked it like that. She was my best friend and I was yet to tell her, yet some unknown entity was sending me cryptic messages about it.

I picked up the phone for the umpteenth time and stared at the message, it was still the same thing and nothing had changed. Was it my uncle that was doing this to me? He was one person that I was terrified of, and I couldn’t see him passing up on such an opportunity. What was even more frightening was the fact that Uncle Leo was already working actively against me. He didn’t want me running Beacon Studios simply because I was a woman, I was sure that once he found out that I was attracted to women, it would only serve as more arsenal in his weapons against me.

I couldn’t just sit around doing nothing and hoping that they don’t send another text. I had to do something instead of watching everything I had turn into smoke.

I picked up the phone yet again and went straight to the text messages. I read the text that had caused all these issues and then decided to send a reply. I began to type in a flurry of texts. With my heart beating heavily in my chest, my fingers were zipping across the screen of my smartphone, punching words into the keypad.

I soon paused to study my reply, I pursed my lips and slowly shook my head, "Nah, that won’t do."

Then, with a sigh, I cleared it all out. I didn’t want to sound desperate or scared. I had to be smart about all this. If they knew that they had gotten to me, it would make them more confident. I had to squash that. So, first things first, I had to find out who they were.

This time around, I kept it simple. I sent them a reply:

Who is this? What are you talking about?

I watched as the message was delivered. I held my phone tightly as I waited for a response. I knew that one was going to come soon.

I was right. Minutes later, my phone vibrated as another message came in. When I opened it, my heart skipped a beat as I saw it was from the same person. The message read:

Who I am doesn’t matter. But you can call me Maven, you and I are going to have a very profitable relationship.

"What the hell is this?" I muttered as I stared at the message. Was this a reporter who had managed to get my number? And what the hell kind of name was Maven anyway? But then, I still didn’t know what this Maven person wanted, so I had to be careful. I thought about it for a while and figured out what to reply.

Soon, my fingers were flying over the keypad once more, and I texted him my response:

Okay, Maven. What do you want?

I was sure that once I found out what Maven wanted from me, I would be able to figure out who he was. At least I hoped so.

This time around, the reply came almost immediately. It was so fast that it caused me to jump, almost dropping the phone. I opened up the message and as I read the words, my heartbeat raced as I realized that the one thing I was scared of was finally happening. The text read:

I know what you are, Kira. No one else does, though. Do you think the world will love you this much when they find out who you really are? Do you think your friends and family will love you this much when they see the real you?

My fingers were trembling as I began to type in a reply, however, halfway through my fingers froze, hovering over my screen as I stared blankly at it. What was I going to type? Was I going to deny it? Was I going to admit it? Was I going to ignore it? I didn’t know what to do!

Just then, the choice was made for me as the phone vibrated yet again in my hand, another message had popped in. It was still from Maven, and it read:

How much are you willing to protect your secret, Kira?

At that point, I cried out as the phone slipped from my fingers like wet soap. I felt a dull thud in my chest as I fell back in the bed, I couldn’t stop the burning tears that blinded me from falling down my cheeks. The very thing I was scared of was coming to pass right before my eyes.

I was being blackmailed!
