I Will Be the Greatest Knight -
Chapter 89: Unimaginable Horrors
Chapter 89: Unimaginable Horrors
Arthur had always considered himself level-headed on the battlefield.
In fact, he gained the name the Wolf of the North because he could tear apart dire wolves with his bare hands if necessary. Things like that no longer caused his heart to race much. Only events revolving around his family tended to get a rise out of him those days.
It had taken decades of fighting, but he was fearless. His wife hated it more than anything on Earth, but the life he had given her was only possible because of all of his bravery. Someone in his position couldn’t afford fear.
However, that day was different.
Arthur was at his last village. There were only a few tasks to help with before he would be able to return to the Duke’s Tower and hope that his daughter had made it there as well. After an entire summer and autumn of being around his sick mother, stressed out wife, and unaware son, he missed his daughter unbelievably.
She was a breath of fresh air. All he wanted to do was hug her.
He assured himself that there was nothing much more to do. That was also when he realized he had been too relaxed.
There was a large thump as a rock overturned on the mountainside and he witnessed the apprentice, who had gone along on the winterization tour of the north, was crushed by the boulder as it rolled along.
Behind the boulder followed teams of goblins and eventually two ogres. It was as if hell opened up and showed him that there were still things left to fear in the world.
Yet that wasn’t even the beginning of it.
It wasn’t until he witnessed an ogre approaching his daughter after over an hour of battle that real fear struck him. She was his biggest hope for the future and so very much like him. Parents weren’t supposed to see their children dying. It was against the very nature of the world.
There was no other option for him other than to climb the damned monster and try to rip off its head himself so that he could ensure that his daughter continued to live another day. Even if much of what she would do in her career as an apprentice then knight was out of his hands, that very moment was very much in his hands.
Deep down he knew that what he was doing was a huge risk, but he would rather the ogre pay attention to him rather than focus on Irene any longer.
The ogre let out a shout of pain as he reached high on its back and stabbed a particularly fleshy part of it. Reaching its limit, the monster threw itself backward.
That was when his life began to flash before his eyes and he witnessed his daughter’s heart break into a million pieces while she watched him. All she could do was fall to her hands and knees at the edge of the cliff and see her father fall to the ground, possibly killing him depending on where or how he might land with such heavy armor covering his body.
However, the ogre falling would also mean that it wouldn’t likely get back up because then the knights could take advantage of the damage already done to the monster. Severing its arteries and bleeding it out would ensure that it never got up to murder another human ever again.
The impact of Arthur’s body against the spongy ground caused him to be knocked unconscious for a moment but he wasn’t dead.
Irene couldn’t tell that much from on top of the cliff so, the moment she was able to move, she began sprinting as fast as possible, tearing her clothing and hurting her ankle on the way but it didn’t matter because she needed to make sure her father was okay. Even if he was hurt they could work to get him back together and continue on as a knight—just as he was always meant to be.
Only when she was running did the wind on her face make her realize that there were tears falling down her cheeks. However, she didn’t care how ridiculous she might look at that moment.
Her thoughts were entirely full of her father. It was obvious that he panicked because of the ogre facing her, now she was panicking because of what the ogre did to him.
She had never considered that the two of them working together in the same knighthood could be a bad thing. Emotions she was facing were heavier than she had ever experienced in her entire life.
The girl heard that the others who were once at her side were also racing after her. She was grateful that they were there to support her despite how dangerous it was that she was insistently throwing herself back into the battle. Most but not all of the goblins had been killed.
To allow her to keep going forth, Sir Sven unsheathed his sword and started running towards goblins who approached. He advised Bren to do the same and Irene continued on.
The ogre was still thrashing and it was enough to knock down one of the other knights who dared face it at its side. It wasn’t entirely contained yet but she could run as long as she went towards its legs and the cliff.
"Dad!" Irene cried when she could finally see him.
The ogre’s round body was enough to have him concealed until she made it to the other side of such a putrid monster.
In mere seconds, the tide shifted again. The ogre wrapped its hand around a rock club and with a final effort.
It just so happened that where it struck was Arthur’s right arm. It was smashed against the rock underneath until blood erupted from his plate armor. The front plate met the back plate and the greave was bent until nothing more could fit inside of it.
Irene tripped when she was mere feet from her father, but she crawled the rest of the way to the man who seemed entirely lifeless to her.
She was lucky that the others had dealt with the ogre before much more damage could be done. Otherwise, she would have been easily crushed as her hands felt around what was left of his arm. She could feel blood against her skin since her gloves were shredded by that point.
Shock had settled in and her unintelligible movements did nothing to help the situation, yet she still moved as if doing something was better than nothing. By that point, she was numb and merely a pile of responses to the horrors she had just witnessed.
