Chapter 88: Not Thinking

Arrows swished through the sky as Irene and Sir Sven did their best to aim at the ogres’ large yellow eyes that scanned the ground, looking for anything to use as a weapon. Without an intelligent thought in their heads, all they knew was to destroy the pests that dared swipe at their legs. A few times, the monsters even fell to their backside, hoping to crush the humans who attacked from below.

Fortunately, no humans had been crushed in that way quite yet. Irene hoped that it never happened because amongst the people trying to take on the monsters were the people she considered family even outside of her father who was also down there.

It was an overwhelming sight, wanting to keep an eye on Leif, Gunnar, and Felix as they all did their best to slash down the monsters.

However, the sheer size of the monsters made those below seem like mice trying to collapse a brick tower by removing crumbs of rock at a time. If she were less trained and less focused, she might consider the task at hand entirely impossible altogether.

Irene might laugh at the sight of an ogre with arrows sticking out of the side of its head as it turned left and right, searching the ground for whatever was making its knees and ankles hurt so unbelievably bad.

Each time the monsters hit the ground with their rock clubs, it felt like an earthquake even from up on the rocks where Sven and Irene were shooting arrows.

Soon enough, more backup arrived from the Duke’s Tower with more help.

Irene was surprised to see that the squires, their absolute last line of defense, had joined the battle.

"I will cover the squire, sir!" she shouted to Sir Sven.

"Good idea," the knight responded, not lowering his own arrow and continuing to search for an opening where he could finally blind the ogres once and for all.

The girl’s bow pointed towards the south. She nervously watched as the squire, Bren, who was only a year younger than her, started to climb up the steep mountain on his hands and feet considering the harsh angle he came from.

Luckily it seemed that the bodies of goblins he crossed by were all dead or incapacitated enough not to go after him.

When he finally made it to the top where he could begin to walk like a human rather than an animal on all fours, he rushed forward dutifully.

"This weapon was taken from goblins in the past," he explained, pulling out a crossbow from the pack on his back. "I’m not a good aim, but I believe the two of you could get good use out of it. The Commander says that it takes the same arrows as a bow with little issue.

Irene put her bow over her shoulders so it would stay put and she hesitantly took the crossbow from the apprentice. She rushed to Sir Sven who had just shot off another arrow, sinking it into the ogre’s neck rather than where he wanted to.

"Bren has brought a crossbow," Irene quickly explained. "Shall I give it a go?"

"Please," Sven said. "I don’t like the damned things."

It was an order enough for her and the girl pulled out more arrows but took a moment to figure out how to load the object and then aim it correctly at the target she hoped to hit. Pulling back the metal string was quite the test of strength, but she managed to do it and secure it so it was truly ready to shoot.

It was heavier than a bow and she had to focus hard to steady herself. After all, the weight of the weapon along with the winds from the high vantage point, worked against her.

Here goes nothing, she thought as she pulled the device’s trigger.

She thought her aim was bad because the sheer force of such a weapon caused her to land on her backside and Bren was quick to help her back to her feet.

"You did it!" Sir Sven exclaimed.

"I’m out of arrows!" she cried.

"It’s alright," he assured her. "You did very well."

Irene’s green eyes were fixed on the ogre that she had shot with the crossbow. Not only did the arrow sink into its head, but it embedded itself deeply.

The ogre let out its version of a scream but it was more like a roar. Many around had to cover their ears—especially those who stood on top of the cliffside because they were practically at head level with the monsters.

The giant only took a few more steps before it was rendered useless and fell to the ground in a heap that caused the earth to shake more than ever before. If a meteor fell from the sky, Irene believed that it wouldn’t make a noise as loud as the ogre falling. It was almost as if it was made of rocks rather than the leathery skin she knew they were covered with, having felt it firsthand to know.

This major development was enough to cause the other ogre to finally turn its dull head towards the cliff where three people stood. The gears turning in its brain were slow but it finally realized that there were more threats to be handled.

As if she could watch every thought that passed by its brain, Irene braced herself the moment she realized it was slowly walking towards them. All they could do was run deeper even though they were on a shallow cliff’s edge in the first place.

Since she didn’t want to see the squire get hurt, the girl held out one of her hands and stood in front of Bren even though he was taller than her despite being younger.

"Don’t move," Sven told them. "They have poor eyesight at night."

However, they weren’t the only ones to take notice of what the ogre was up to.

From down below, everyone looked on in horror before they all started slashing at the monster more urgently.

Specifically, Sir Arthur knew that his daughter was on top of the cliff the ogre approached. He had seen her striking red hair the moment she went up there and shot off a few arrows. Even in the midst of such horrors, his heart was proud of his girl. He couldn’t wait to embarrass her later and tell her how strong she looked from down below.

His planned attack fell to the wayside as genuine fear that the ogre could really kill her struck him. Irene’s path down had been blocked as the beast approached. They were better off high but couldn’t climb upwards because of the large boulders behind them.

In sheer panic, Arthur climbed the wall he once hid behind and jumped off of the top of it, sinking his sword in the soft flesh of the monster’s back that resided higher on its body. Since it rarely had attacks from above, the flesh and skin much higher was softer.

However, he wasn’t finished as he climbed his way up, using the spike on his left greave or his right hand and sword to give himself leverage. His weight was heavier with all of his armor and his arms burned, but he was determined to get the monster in its deep neck vein so that it would bleed to death before it could kill his child.

Before he could raise his sword and do as intended, the monster threw itself backward, causing Arthur to be thrown off. Irene witnessed her father giving her a look of sheer fear that she had never seen him wear before. It would haunt her for the rest of her life.
