Chapter 60: Police Involvement?
Luo Yanyu accepted the call and spoke in a hurried tone, "Zhao, what should we do?! Madam He really did fall—it looks like an accident!"
"Huh? Are you sure? That guy said he pushed her..." Zhao Yiming’s voice cracked slightly, making her raise an eyebrow.
"Yeah, I already gave you some details about our witness interviews... and now I’ve got the CCTV," she continued. "Though, the footage isn’t that clear since it was already night and raining."
"I see... I’ll come over. Send me the address."
"Hm, you sure you’ll get it? You don’t even know how to use a phone..." she sighed. "Or is Mrs. Su with you?"
"Huh?" Zhao Yiming laughed awkwardly.
"Well... yeah, she’s with me. I accompanied her to check into a hotel since she felt uncomfortable staying in her apartment."
"Hmph! I knew it."
Luo Yanyu frowned and hung up, trying to hold back the swirl of emotions inside before sending him the address.
Even though she told herself she didn’t mind him being surrounded by women... it still stung.
That twinge of jealousy wouldn’t go away, especially when she imagined what they might have done together.
But she quickly shook her head and forced herself to focus back on Madam He’s case.
"Anyway, I need a copy of that file, if you don’t mind?" she asked.
"Sure. Give me your phone," Lao Xinya replied flatly, holding out her hand.
Yanyu handed it over, and once the file transfer was complete, she thanked her and stepped out of the back room, returning to the main shop.
She sat down, her mind swirling with possibilities. Could it really have just been an accident? Was Daijin right all along?
What if that bastard had been bluffing—just saying he pushed her to look cool in front of his gang?
"Leader, judging from that face... what I said might be right, huh?"
Li Daijin suddenly appeared, sitting across from her with a steaming bowl of fresh noodles in hand.
Just hearing his voice annoyed her. Without hesitation, she picked up a wooden chopstick and threw it at his face. He flinched.
"Shut up! Maybe he threw a rock or something from far away!" she snapped.
"Did you see a rock?" Daijin said casually, slurping his noodles without a care in the world.
Her eye twitched. She was about to throw a bottle of chili powder at him when the shop door suddenly opened.
"Ah! Ms. Detective, you’re here again today?" Wen Qiao greeted the newcomer cheerfully.
The customer laughed in response.
"Ms. Detective" was a striking woman in her mid-thirties, with long, slick black hair tied neatly back and piercing blue eyes.
She wore a sleeveless, dark blue knit top and long white pants. Her police jacket was folded over her arm.
She looked more like a stylish corporate executive than a cop.
"Your Sichuan noodles are the best, Madam Wen. Of course, I’d come back," she said, sitting at a table near them.
Luo Yanyu tensed immediately.
She had just committed a crime yesterday—helping her ’boyfriend’ hide a corpse and stealing from a gangster. A real detective sitting this close made her skin crawl.
Wen Qiao chuckled warmly. "Of course, I’ll get it ready right away." She headed back into the kitchen to prepare her signature spicy, mouth-watering noodles.
Luo Yanyu quickly lowered her gaze, pretending to focus on Li Daijin’s clear broth soup instead.
"What is it, Leader? You want my noodles that badly? I’ll give it to you," he teased with a shrug.
"Shut up," she muttered, rolling her eyes and slapping the back of his head. He flinched again.
After what felt like forever, Wen Qiao finally returned with a steaming bowl of spicy noodles and set it down on the table. The detective’s mouth was practically watering.
"Careful, it’s hot and spicy. You’ll burn your tongue if you dive in too fast," Wen warned with a gentle smile.
The detective just grinned, already picking up her chopsticks. "Don’t worry, Madam Wen. Spicy food’s best when it’s hot!"
"Anyway, why don’t you sit here and listen to me ramble a bit?" she added playfully.
Wen Qiao laughed. "Well, I suppose that’s fine. We don’t have many customers today anyway."
She sat across from the detective, watching her eat with childlike joy. Her cheeks and lips turned bright red from the spice, but she didn’t slow down one bit—devouring the whole bowl in barely two minutes.
"Oh wow, you’d break a world record for eating spicy food at that speed!" Wen Qiao clapped, clearly amazed and delighted by how much the woman enjoyed it.
"What can I say? It’s just that good." The detective wiped her mouth with a tissue and smiled shyly.
"Anyway, you don’t seem to have many cases lately, huh? You’ve been coming here pretty often," Wen said, glancing briefly at Luo Yanyu’s table.
"Yeah, well... this city isn’t that big. Serious crimes are pretty rare," the detective sighed, disappointed. "The last case I worked on was someone stealing cats..."
Wen Qiao chuckled. "But what if I told you I have an interesting case for you?"
"What?! Really?!" The detective’s eyes lit up as she leaned closer across the table. "Tell me!"
Wen Qiao turned toward Yanyu and Daijin. "Young lady, handsome man—why not get some help from the detective here?"
"Oh! That’s—" Li Daijin started to speak, but Luo Yanyu quickly covered his mouth with her hand.
"Hahaha, I don’t think it’s worth the detective’s time, you know?" Yanyu said with an awkward laugh.
"What are you talking about? Of course, it is!" the detective said enthusiastically, already walking over to their table. "Now tell me—what’s the case?"
"Ugh... umm..." Yanyu started to sweat, visibly nervous as the memory of yesterday’s ’crime’ flashed through her mind.
"Oh, right! I’m Han Queying," the woman added cheerfully. "Just transferred here from a nearby precinct."
Luo Yanyu’s face turned pale.
But she quickly shook it off, trying to calm herself. Madam He’s case was serious and she needed justice! She needed another opinion. And what better opinion than a professional’s?
"Alright... come here and take a look at this footage."
