Chapter 59: Just An Accident?

Luo Yanyu and Li Daijin stood at the top of the pedestrian overpass. It was a tall one, and the wind tugged at their hair as they looked down.

From this height, Yanyu could see cars speeding along the road below. It was clearly a dangerous spot for elderly people, and it was understandable why Mr. Wu believed the whole thing was just an accident.

After all, there were no confirmed witnesses—or maybe there were, but they’d chosen to stay silent, not wanting to get involved.

"What do you think, Leader? It’s totally possible Madam He just fell from here. These stairs are pretty steep," Li Daijin muttered, crouching like some kind of amateur detective.

"The guy from Golden Earth said he pushed her! I even recorded it!" Luo Yanyu snapped, frustrated.

"But... we already asked around. Even the first shopkeeper who found Madam He said she didn’t see anyone, not a man since that day is raining and deserted," Li replied with a sigh.

They had indeed done their rounds. Every witness gave the same story—an unfortunate accident. No one saw anyone else on the stairs with Madam He.

"It’s possible the perpetrator ran off before anyone noticed! And why would he lie about something like that?!" Luo Yanyu couldn’t bring herself to believe the witness accounts.

"Maybe he was just showing off," Li Daijin stood up, brushing dust off his knees. "And it’s hard to find CCTV around here. The stairs are too high, and none of the nearby shops have a good angle."

"I know..." she murmured, biting her lip in frustration. "What do we do now?"

This city wasn’t like Shanghai or Chongqing, where 24/7 surveillance covered nearly every street. At least here, at this particular overpass, they had nothing.

But Luo Yanyu wasn’t ready to give up. She decided to walk back down the stairs and double-check the view from the nearby storefronts. Maybe she missed something before.

Just as she reached the bottom, a door suddenly swung open.

A woman stepped out—short, with dark purple hair and sharp eyes. She wore only a loose shirt and a pair of short pants, her gaze suspicious as it scanned Luo Yanyu.

"What are you doing outside my noodle shop?" the woman asked bluntly. "You’ve been questioning shopkeepers and even random pedestrians! With that shady-looking partner of yours scaring off customers!"

Luo Yanyu’s eyes widened in disbelief. She hadn’t expected to be confronted like this—let alone blamed. And as someone who didn’t take well to accusations, she immediately bristled.

"What?! I’m trying to solve a murder here! Aren’t you scared knowing a killer might be walking around this complex while the police do nothing?!" she snapped, crossing her arms defiantly.

"Hah! The only thing I’m scared of is not having enough money to keep this shop running—money to survive!" the woman barked back. "Now go yell somewhere else!"

Luo Yanyu’s brow twitched in frustration, her temper rising fast. Just as she was about to lash out, the door creaked open again.

An old woman peeked out, her voice calm but firm.

"Xinya! I told you not to scare off people like that!"

"Mom! She’s not a customer! Both of them are suspicious!" Xinya huffed, clearly annoyed.

The woman, Wen Qiao, turned her calm gaze toward the two "suspicious" individuals and said, "I was also there when the accident happened. I didn’t see anyone near Madam He. She just fell."

Then, she added something that made Yanyu and Daijin’s faces light up. "But if you’re looking for more help, we do have a CCTV camera that captures part of the pedestrian overpass. The view is only from the middle, though."

"Mom! I told you not to get involved! You know what a pain it is dealing with the police!" Xinya protested, her voice rising with frustration.

But Wen Qiao gently patted her daughter’s shoulder. "Don’t be like that. We need to help people in need. You know how hard it is when no one’s there for you."

Xinya widened her eyes, her expression softening for a moment before she sighed and walked back into the shop. Wen Qiao followed, along with Luo Yanyu and Li Daijin.

Though Wen Qiao was kind and welcoming, Yanyu still felt irritated by her daughter. How can a mother and daughter be so different?!

Inside the simple noodle shop, they were led to a small room in the back where the CCTV footage was stored on a PC.

The room was cramped, so Daijin decided to stay outside, leaving just Yanyu and Xinya inside. Wen Qiao had to return to the front to serve a new customer.

"I can’t believe I’m here alone with her,’ Luo Yanyu thought, stealing a glance at Xinya, who hadn’t smiled once and kept grumbling while operating the PC.

"Here. This is the footage from when Madam He was found," Xinya finally said, as the video began to play on the screen.

As described by Mr. Wu and all the witnesses, it had been raining that day—not too heavily, but enough to make everyone carry an umbrella.

People rarely used the pedestrian overpass that night, probably because it was already dark, with only the streetlights faintly illuminating the area.

"Ah... That’s Madam He," Yanyu said as she watched the footage.

The screen showed an old, hunchbacked lady holding a red umbrella, her arms weighed down with several shopping bags. It wasn’t that clear, but since Madam He wearing a bright yellow jacket, they could see her form even in the dark.

She looked exhausted, carefully making her way down the stairs. But then—suddenly—she slipped and fell to the ground, just like that. The CCTV footage, limited in angle, showed her collapse but revealed no one else behind her.

"See? It was an accident!" Xinya declared. "There’s no one near her. Even if someone had pushed her, at least their hand or shadow would show in this footage!"

Luo Yanyu clenched her fists, biting her lip. As much as she hated to admit it, the annoying girl had a point... It really did look like an accident. But then—why did that man say he pushed Madam He?

Just as her thoughts were spiraling, her phone suddenly rang. She checked the screen—Zhao Yiming was calling.
