Chapter 993: Sorry, not thank you.

[3 days before the inauguration]

According to Moose, Heaven had opened her eyes. However, she was unresponsive. She wasn’t responding to the external tests he had done, challenging his clinical practices. Moose said a coma patient could open their eyes, but that didn’t mean they were conscious. With the damages Heaven inflicted — the brain hemorrhage and her cardiac arrest during and after the operation — this might be a good or a bad sign.

With this news reaching Dominic, he immediately caught the earliest flight last night. He barely said goodbye to his children and talked to his parents, knowing he had too little time to travel back and forth across the globe.

"She’ll be fine, right?" Suddenly, from the other aisle of the private plane, Axel’s voice was heard. "My sister... I remember her in the morgue before. She didn’t have a pulse back then, and the doctors announced her death. Is this something like this, too?"

Dominic slowly turned his head, and his eyes instantly fell on the fear-stricken pair of eyes mirroring him. He didn’t plan to take Axel with him. However, Axel clung to him like a superglue, unwilling to let his brother go unless he allowed him to go. Hence the reason Axel was on this plane.

"I hope," answered Dominic. "I hope that’s the case."

"Just how did she end up in such a state again?"

Dominic looked away, setting his attention to the window. "I don’t know," he whispered. "I have no idea."

"Bro." Axel stopped, staring at his brother’s side profile.

Knowing Dominic, Axel didn’t need to ask what his brother meant by that. It wasn’t that Dominic didn’t know what his wife was up to. However, he probably didn’t expect she would come back to him half-dead. Even Axel couldn’t believe it. His sister was very clever and skilled, after all. It was almost impossible to think that someone was able to inflict so much damage on her in a one-on-one brawl.

Something else must have happened.

"She just had to be okay," whispered Dominic, eyes still on the window. "Axel, you asked me why I was meeting all those sorts of people and would even go so far as to hold a knife at their throats..." he paused as he recalled what he had been doing the moment he returned to the country.

"Because if I don’t, Heaven will," he continued under his breath. "She might not approve of it and if this was before, I’d tell her there must be other ways. Ways that didn’t include selling our souls to evil. Trust justice, trust the good men that still exist."

Bitterness shone in his eyes as he recalled everything about him and his wife. In the past, Heaven would instinctively resort to putting justice into her hands. Be it a petty argument with Sebastian’s classmate’s parents or as serious as interrogating their son’s abductors. Dominic, on the other hand, would argue and tell her there were other means.

He would tell her that violence or tainting her hands wouldn’t resolve everything. He would keep reminding her that she was no longer Hera Cruel and that the justice system would open their ears and listen to her. Being in Heaven’s body meant she was no longer an enemy of law.

It took them some time and a lot of patience, but Heaven changed. She did her best to reconsider the law, change her ways, and become a really careful person so her life as Heaven Liu wouldn’t fall like Hera’s life. Therefore, Dominic couldn’t help but blame himself.

"I changed her," he whispered, smiling bitterly. "And yet, I ignored the fact that since I changed her, I also have to change myself. One of us should take the role and because I didn’t, she had to take the role back because leaving it vacant can cost us everyone."

After saying his piece, Dominic didn’t say anything anymore. Meanwhile, Axel kept his lips in a thin line, observing his brother’s side profile. As the new CEO of the Lyon Group with enough connections, it wasn’t hard to follow Dominic’s tracks. His brother wasn’t being that careful, after all. Moreover, he did Dominic a few favors. Thus, he had a general idea of what his big brother was doing.

Did Axel approve of his brother’s action? Definitely not. He was against it, knowing Dominic might be burning bridges and building flimsy ones. But he could understand it. Not that he supported it, but he understood his brother enough not to argue with him.

"By the way... I sent a few trusted lawyers to that guy in the Central Intelligence," said Axel, looking away from Dominic. "I did what you told me. I hired only the best and made sure no one could trace it back to us."

"Thanks."

Axel peeked at Dominic once more. "And I’ve proxies Ivy for her important meeting. I wouldn’t be surprised if rumors that we’re married would go around."

Dominic cast his little brother a quick look and smiled subtly. "Thank you."

"Sorry, not thank you," Axel corrected, holding his brother’s eyes sternly. "I’m doing this because I don’t have a choice. My brother needs to be the bad guy, but I just can’t bear the thought that you might end up dead without me doing anything."

Axel sighed once more and shook his head. "You owe me a lot," he added, nodding at Dominic reassuringly. "So, you better make sure my sister will be fine; Basti and Miri won’t get dragged into this. Even though I’m still disappointed with Mom, Dad, and Grandma, I still wish for their well-being."

A moment of silence followed suit as both of them stared at each other. They neither showed signs of looking away from each other as if their eyes were enough to continue their discussion. They only stopped the staring competition when the flight attendant approached, telling them they would land soon.

And with that, Axel and Dominic remained quiet, anticipating their landing and the quick journey to the facility where Heaven was.
