Chapter 976: A step ahead
[Minutes ago]
Just as planned, Dominic and Bear left as soon as they could after settling some matters in the facility. They wasted no time even during their travel with Dominic contacting some people, while Bear was arranging some other matters. Upon landing, they didn’t even bother visiting the children as Dominic simply had a quick shower in the nearest hotel they booked.
They already rested on the nine-hour flight. Since Dominic was used to depraving himself with sleep, this was nothing new to him. It was the same for Bear. Not to mention, time was crucial for them. Therefore, they didn’t even think of it.
With that being said, Dominic met some of his people and supporters for today’s election. They stayed for a while and then left to attend to more important arrangements.
One of the people Dominic wanted to meet was the minister of defense and the ambassador of Sorrento. The minister of defense gladly accepted a meeting request from Dominic on such short notice. Mainly because Dominic helped him in the past during a controversy involving the man in question.
"Thank you, Minister, for meeting me on such a short notice." Dominic expressed his gratitude as soon as he sat down in the private room of the Japanese restaurant. "I truly appreciate it."
The old man, sitting across from Dominic, smiled at him humbly. "I owe you a lot, Mr. Zhu. You saved me and my family from a crisis in the past. You know I would never say no to your requests since I haven’t thanked you enough for what you have done in the past."
"So." The old man poured Dominic a cup of tea as he continued. "What help do you need from me? We’re both busy men. I hope you do not mind if I direct."
"Not at all," Dominic replied as he received the cup with a thanks. "If anything, I appreciate it."
"Well?" the old man lifted his gaze at Dominic. "Was this about the problem you mentioned to me before?"
"Not entirely, but there’s a connection."
"Interesting."
"The huge problem not only the government faces, but society is the illegal dealing and operations happening in different regions..." Dominic started his point by telling the minister about the problems they had been facing for years. Not that he had to remind the minister, but to use it as a stepping stone to get to his point. "... and as I tried to touch the matter, I put myself in a tricky situation. Though I cannot say it completely that way, somehow, it turned out to be like that."
The old man who attentively listened to him nodded. "In other words, people now want to silence you? Do they want to make sure you won’t win this election?"
"I think it’s the opposite." Dominic’s answer caused the other man to raise a brow. "Dane Zhang."
"Dane Zhang?" the latter furrowed his brows, rubbing his chin as he tried to remember where he heard that name. "Oh? Isn’t that your assistant’s name?"
"Dane Zhang is a young boy."
"Hmm?"
"He is an astounding student, a top of his class, and a loving son of his parents," said Dominic. "However, that bright student who had a bright future ahead of his died many years ago."
The old man planted his hand on the small table between them, eyes full of intrigue. "Mr. Zhu, what are you implying?"
"My assistant’s name isn’t Dane Zhang." Keeping his stoic front, Dominic held the minister’s eyes sternly. "The man who hid behind the boy’s name and stole his story as his own is Dimitri. Does his name ring a bell for you?"
"Apparently, I don’t think I do."
"Then, it might surprise you that the man who had been with me all these years turned out to be a leader of a huge and powerful syndicate in the underground," he revealed, watching the minister’s expression change from curiosity to shock. "From what I had gathered so far, under his wing was the notorious Scorpion Gang that had caused so many problems in the past."
Dominic paused as he smiled subtly. "I was just as shocked as you when I learned of this, Minister."
"Mr. Zhu, hang on. You’re saying that young man who had been with you is a ringleader of a crime syndicate?"
Dominic nodded.
"What a surprise!" the minister gasped, barely wrapping his head around it. "And you found this out?"
"Not long ago."
"Did he know you found out?"
"That’s why... my wife is in this situation."
"Your wife?"
"She met an ’accident,’ and is now fighting for her life."
The minister assessed Dominic’s darkening aura, convinced that there was no reason for Dominic to lie. It wasn’t like the minister had any doubts about the man. If anything, he admired Dominic for his work and ambition. Dominic painted himself as a smart fellow who simply wanted to make a change or leave a legacy behind.
"I’m sorry to hear that," the minister cleared his throat, nodding in understanding. "Was your wife with you now? I’m saying, is she in your custody?"
"Yes, thankfully. But I worry that these people won’t stop until they kill me."
"Mr. Zhu, don’t worry about that," the minister reassured sincerely. "Tell me what you need me to do and what effective help I can do to ensure you and your family’s safety."
"Thank you, Minister. Your help will be greatly appreciated."
"It’s alright. Back then, while I was under fire, you’re the only person who believed in me." The minister offered a kind smile, nodding at him reassuringly. "Now, it’s time for me to pay that back because I’m not the only person you saved back then. But also, my family and everyone around me."
"That is nothing. I simply did what I right at that time since I know, that losing you is a big loss for this country and its citizens."
The minister sighed as he shook his head. "Dimitri, huh? So, your assistant had been hiding behind your shadow to conceal himself. He’s already a reliable man as your assistant, but now, I think he’s smarter than he appears. Surely, people in the underground were getting smarter and bold."
"After all, from what I heard, the chief of the Central Intelligence turned out to be a felon himself," the minister continued while Dominic furrowed his brows. "Just like Dane Zhang, he also used a fake identity and ceased an important spot in that international agency."
The minister then paused as if he realized he had carelessly run his mouth. "Oh, sorry. I shouldn’t have said that."
"Minister." Dominic carefully balled his hands under the table, eyes unblinking at the minister. "What did you say about the chief of the Central Intelligence?"
"Oh, goodness. This should’ve been a secret since it’s confidential information." The minister cleared his throat as he leaned forward, continuing in a quiet voice. "I heard that the chief of the Central Intelligence is actually a spy sent from an organization. I don’t know the details yet, obviously, this won’t be released in the media because it’s an embarrassment for the country and all government agencies. Although this doesn’t affect us in any way, it still leaves an impact."
Dominic went quiet for a moment and nodded. "I see," he breathed out, turning his head to the open courtyard connected to their room where Bear was standing guard. He just blinked and Bear quietly left his post, hurriedly making a phone call as he walked away.
The moment the line was connected, Bear immediately gave out a warning. "Don’t go back to the headquarters. They found you out."
"Too late... I’ve arrived."
The next thing Bear heard was someone announcing Wolf was under arrest.
They were late.
Their enemies were a step ahead of them.
