Chapter 974: Oh, youth. What a nice thing to have.

"I have to settle this. Only when I do that can I move forward."

A thin layer of tears coated Ivy’s eyes, gazing down at the hand that was holding hers. She held his hand back, swallowing down the tension in her throat as she looked up at him.

"Then I’d wait," she forced out her voice. "I mean, I wouldn’t wait. I’d do what we initially planned. I will move forward — slowly, like a turtle. Then you will catch up. Didn’t you say you ran fast?"

Hearing her remarks, Tiger almost choked on his own breath. He could only stare at her, cupping her face and brushing her cheek with his thumb.

"I might die," he whispered helplessly, almost hearing her heart sink. "I plan to."

"What?"

"Dragon and Dimitri’s death will not quench my anger. I’ll start with them, but I won’t just stop there," he explained with great difficulty. "Those two might be our enemy right now, but there were still people out there who would jump on us at a moment’s notice."

Tiger paused as he drew a deep breath, rocking his head mildly. "I’ll kill all of them, one by one, until the entire underground is wiped out." Basically, the Reapers’ enemies were over fifty percent of the people in the underground.

Even if the Reapers didn’t do anything against most of them, they saw all members of the Reapers as a threat. Logically, everyone believed to take away the remaining authority Hera had in her hands, all her trusted people should die.

If Heaven ended up in a vegetative state, Tiger and the remaining members of the Reapers that weren’t under Dragon’s behest would go all out. Not just to settle scores, but to give her children the safety sought for them. Although Dominic talked sense into them, telling them they were just as precious members of her family, it was the least they could do.

To protect those she tried to protect, and also those they wanted to protect.

"So..." Tiger trailed off as he forced a smile, nodding at her. "Keep doing what you do. Don’t wait, but keep moving forward, and don’t look back."

Ivy shook her head as a tear rolled down her cheek. She bit her lips as hard as she could, gazing down, holding her tears back. When she lifted her tearful eyes again, she squeezed his hands.

"Please..." she whispered. "... don’t do this."

"Ivy."

"I’ll keep moving forward just as planned, but promise me you will catch up," she requested in between her jagged breaths. "Even if it’s a lie, even if you know you won’t keep it, promise me you’ll catch up."

His eyes softened, wiping her tears with his thumb. "I’m sorry."

"I don’t want that." She shook her head. "Don’t apologize. That’s not what I’m asking."

Tiger opened his mouth but ended up shutting them once again. Lying was something he could do without blinking an eye. But he couldn’t do that to her. Ivy had been through a lot and finally had the courage to do something for herself without people’s validation.

How could he lie and let her get stuck in one place? Waiting helplessly for someone who might not come back?

’I should’ve listened to her,’he told himself. ’If only I listened to her back then and didn’t rationalize my feelings and actions, Ivy wouldn’t be in so much pain.’

Even though Ivy was willing to accept the chaotic life he had, he didn’t have the heart to offer such a life to her. She deserved the best. She deserved more than what he could offer. Ivy might argue and say otherwise, but any rational person would understand her feelings were simply clouding her judgment.

This was the best, not just for her, but for him as well.

"I’m sorry," he whispered, pulling her into his embrace. "I’m really, really sorry."

Ivy clasped his back, muffling her sobs as she buried her face in his shoulders. All she could hear was his apology and not the false hope she was trying to extract from him. Who would have thought that one of the characteristics — his honesty — which she fell for him, would also hurt her so deeply?

Oh, how she wished he would lie.

He didn’t have to try so hard to lie, because she already planned to believe it. Even if it was foolish. At least she had something to hate about him. But he wouldn’t. Thus, it felt even harder to let him go or accept the fact he might not last long in this world.

Tears damped his shoulders, patting her trembling back gently. Tiger looked up and sniffed hard, barely keeping it together.

’It’ll get better,’ he told himself. ’She’ll only hurt now, but eventually... it’ll get better.’

He didn’t have the heart to say that to her face, though. He already decided on the best course of action. Trying to say comforting words to her would only appear as an attempt to invalidate her feelings.

For a long time, Ivy sobbed quietly in his embrace while he patiently embraced her. When she recovered slightly, she pushed herself away from him and looked at him. Tiger wiped her tears with his thumb, not saying anything.

"When is this?" she asked through her shaking voice. "When do you plan on leaving?"

"Hmm?" Tiger raised his brows before he answered. "As soon as everything is in motion. There’s no exact day, but it won’t take long."

Ivy nodded in understanding and then forced a smile. "Then, until then... should we be in a relationship?"

"Huh?"

"I mean, you’re talking like you’re so sure you’d die. This might be foolish to ask, but can you be my boyfriend?" The corner of her eyes squinted a little in contrast to the tears in its corners. "I can’t hate you even if you hurt me. So, I might as well love you as much as I can until you disappear from me. Even for a little while and even with the mere title of being a lover, let me hold on to something to go on."

"Ivy..." Tiger trailed off, rendered speechless as he stared at her pitiful look. A deep exhale escaped him, chuckling helplessly. "We’re stupid, aren’t we?"

Ivy chuckled, watching him lean his face forward. But just as his lips touched hers, he stopped.

"Hang on," he whispered to her mouth, pulling the pillow behind her, and throwing it in a direction. At the same time, the door slid open, and the pillow hit Moose’s face.

"Do your rounds later!"

Moose deadpanned, looking at Tiger kissing Ivy while crawling on top of her. "This isn’t a love motel," he grumbled. "Oy, both of you are patients!"

But alas, they just continued, even with Moose’s presence. He even caught Ivy grinning against Tiger’s lips, making him scrunch up his face.

"Miss Wei, I had more expectations from you — ugh!" Moose gagged, shaking his head and slamming the door shut. "Whatever! Hey! Take it slow and gentle, will ya?! You’re supposed to recover as fast as you can!"

Moose continuously clicked his tongue while shaking his head, eyes on the door. "Goodness. Oh, youth. What a nice thing to have."
