Chapter 972: We all do.
"There’s a reason my wife specifically ordered we rescue them and avoid engaging in a fight. It’s because we’re not ready yet."
Primo opened and closed his mind, moving his slightly dilated eyes around the faces in the room. It wasn’t like he didn’t understand their argument. It was true their only goal for this mission was to rescue Leo, Hera, and Ivy.
But...
"We rescued Ivy and Leo, but what about Hera?" Primo asked when he recovered his voice. "Hera is still out there, and from what I’ve seen, she’s probably in a terrible state. Not to mention, Joker is in their custody. Although I want to strangle that guy because he’s the reason I’m handicapped, how can you think of resting when one of your comrades is in danger?"
"That’s rich coming from someone who used his people as shields," Wolf remarked sarcastically, earning a sneer from Primo.
"You want to go down that path now, Wolf?" Primo raised his brows. "Do you want to be put in a drum again?"
"No." Wolf smiled. "Do you?"
"Wolf," Bear called in a warning tone and then shifted his eyes to Primo. "Alexander Cafre, that is enough. I understand you’re probably worried about them —"
"I’m not. Trust me," Primo clarified. "At first, I thought I could use Hera as a stepping stone to get more control in the underground. But after everything, my interest in her vanished altogether. It’s the same for Joker. He can die for all I care. Though I grew fond of my prosthetics, it is still a great reminder of how that guy blew up my entire arm. The experience is a painful memory to remember."
"That’s what you get for dragging an innocent child just to get what you want," Wolf scoffed, only for Primo to raise his voice.
"I know that! That is why...!" Primo slammed his hand on the table, grinding his teeth as he glared daggers at Wolf. "... that is why even if I loathe Joker with every fiber of my body for taking my entire arm and for messing things up, I still want to save him. Why? Because Heaven risked her life trying to save Hera Cruel, who was someone she barely knew. Just what would she feel once she wakes up and hears that we let Joker die?"
The sound of heavy silence followed suit. Everyone had their eyes on the emotional Primo, almost a little surprised at everything he had spewed. Even Wolf, who had a hidden grudge against him, could no longer argue.
"They won’t kill Joker," Moose remarked after a full minute of silence. "Not because they see his skills as useful to them. They just won’t kill him because Joker has something they need. Until they get it from him, they would keep him alive."
Bear huffed, eyes on Primo. "Unlike Miss Wei and Mr. Wu, Joker isn’t as innocent. He wouldn’t make it at the top of our enemy’s list if he wasn’t a threat to them."
"Fighting is probably Joker’s weakness, but he’s more sly than a fox." Wolf cleared his throat, calming himself down and setting aside his grudges against Primo. "This is not the first time he was held hostage. You were his enemy before and even sent people to kill him. So, you should know what I’m trying to say."
"Of course, we’ll save him," Tiger also joined the conversation. "I hate it just as much as you do, but they were right. Saving Joker right now might sound important, but we aren’t in the best state. Whoever got him is probably expecting us to step into their territory to save him."
"It’s a trap," Dominic added. "That is why they sent that photo to Wolf. They are trying to lure us. For sure, they already got the gist of our numbers. Saving him now might result in everyone’s death."
"Being emotional in these situations will only lead you to your demise," Moose’s remarks followed. "You’ve only been in this group not long ago, but we’ve already spent years — many years together. We might not get along most of the time, but we’re all members of a big family. We’ve been through thick and thin. Don’t speak as though we care little of our family because if that’s the case, we wouldn’t be here in the first place."
Primo swallowed the lump in his throat, darting his eyes to everyone around them. Slowly, his tensed shoulders relaxed, shutting his eyes for a moment. He then threw his back on the couch, reopening his eyes, only to see the ceiling.
"Sorry about that," he expressed quietly. "I stepped out of bounds."
"I know you want to impress my wife, or maybe please her." Dominic cast his eyes down. "We all do."
Primo slowly set his eyes back to Dominic, only to notice this strange atmosphere in the air.
"But even if this didn’t happen to her, she would probably make the same decision," Dominic continued, lifting his eyes to Primo. "She’s not the type to risk her people’s lives without a guarantee they would come back to her alive. That includes you. So, even if Joker’s situation is dire and we’re worried about his well-being, we cannot save another if we’re unwell ourselves."
"So, for now, everyone will rest," he added, this time, his tone was more adamant. "Especially you and Tiger, since you’re the most useful in combat and still recovering from your previous injuries. Wolf as well. You were shot earlier, right?"
Wolf clasped his shoulder. "It wasn’t deep. It can even be called a graze. I can help as long as I don’t have to shoot or lift heavy things."
"I see." Dominic rocked his head. "How about you, Bear?"
"I didn’t even get a scratch. Thanks to Ram, who did most of the work," said Bear with confidence. "I also don’t have problems doing some work alone."
"I know that." Dominic shifted his attention to Moose. The latter shrugged.
"After a long operation, all I need is sleep," Moose remarked. "I can assist Bear in whatever you want him to do, but if you’re going to ask me, I prefer looking after Heaven and Fig for now."
"What do you want to do?" Bear asked, making everyone cast their focus on Dominic. "What are you planning?"
"Wolf, can you locate where Dragon is right now? Joker’s whereabouts and where Dimitri moved?" Dominic cast Wolf a look, earning a nod from the man.
"We’re already on it."
"Then, while you’re at it..." Dominic trailed off, shifting his eyes to Bear. "Bear and I will fly back home."
Deep lines appeared on everyone’s forehead, waiting for Dominic’s explanation.
"I have an election to attend to," he explained. "It’s the only way to reach out to people that can help us right now. The same people who would jump on felons like Dragon and Dimitri and Sun Syndicate like hungry piranhas. This matter is no longer a problem we should solve ourselves. We needed help and we’re going to get it."
